Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (DVD Review) – Robbed of the Best Picture Oscar?

May 30, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Frances McDormand, Woody Harrelson, Sam Rockwell, Caleb Landry Jones, Lucas Hedges
Director: Martin McDonagh
Running Time: 110 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: Out Now

For many Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri seemed to be the smart bet to win the Best Picture Oscar. While The Shape Of Water had made the early running, Three Billboards gained momentum through the Award season and seemed like it might cruise to a victory. In the end it didn’t get the big gong, although it did win for the exceptionally strong performance of Frances McDormand and Sam Rockwell. Many were also surprised it lost for writer/director Martin McDonagh’s screenplay, although it is a couple of issues with that screenplay that may be the reason it didn’t win the biggest award.

McDormand plays the hard-bitten Mildred, a woman filled with anger at the local police’s inability to catch whoever was responsible for the rape and murder of her daughter. To try and force the authorities into action she hires three billboards on a rural road, putting up massive posters asking why there have been no arrests and specifically calling out police chief Willoughby (Woody Harrelson). New Solo: A Star Wars Story Trailer – Alden Ehrenreich explores an iconic character’s beginnings

April 10, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

After an extremely muted response to the first trailer for Solo: A Star Wars Story, there was a lot riding on this new promo for the film about the early days of the iconic Han Solo. This one certainly makes things look at lot more entertaining and suggests Alden Ehrenreich might be a better Harrison Ford replacement that the previous trailer did.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Board the Millennium Falcon and journey to a galaxy far, far away in “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” an all-new adventure with the most beloved scoundrel in the galaxy. Through a series of daring escapades deep within a dark and dangerous criminal underworld, Han Solo befriends his mighty future copilot Chewbacca and meets the notorious gambler Lando Calrissian, in a journey that will set the course of one of the Star Wars saga’s most unlikely heroes.

‘The film stars Alden Ehrenreich, Woody Harrelson, Emilia Clarke, Donald Glover, Thandie Newton, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Joonas Suotamo, and Paul Bettany.’

‘Ron Howard directs “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” and Kathleen Kennedy, Allison Shearmur and Simon Emanuel are the producers. Lawrence Kasdan, Jason McGatlin, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller serve as executive producers. Jonathan Kasdan & Lawrence Kasdan wrote the screenplay. “Solo: A Star Wars Story” opens in UK cinemas 24th May.’ [Read more…]

Solo: A Star Wars Story Trailer – An iconic character gets younger in the form of Alden Ehrenreich

February 5, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The planned Han Solo prequel has certainly had production issues, not least swapping directors partway through the shoot, with Phil Lord and Christopher Miller ejected, and Ron Howard brought in. However, issues during the making of Rogue One didn’t stop that being a good movie, so there’s still hope here. It is slightly difficult to get a proper feel for the film from this first trailer though.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Board the Millennium Falcon and journey to a galaxy far, far away in “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” an all-new adventure with the most beloved scoundrel in the galaxy. Through a series of daring escapades deep within a dark and dangerous criminal underworld, Han Solo meets his mighty future co-pilot Chewbacca and encounters the notorious gambler Lando Calrissian, in a journey that will set the course of one of the Star Wars saga’s most unlikely heroes.’

The movie is due out in May. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

War For The Planet Of The Apes (DVD Review) – Caesar’s story reaches a dark & impressive crossroads

November 26, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Andy Serkis, Woody Harrelson, Karin Konoval, Steve Zahn, Amiah Miller
Director: Matt Reeves
Running Time: 136 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: November 27th 2017 (UK)

The recent Planet Of The Apes prequel trilogy is probably the most consistently impressive ‘blockbuster’ franchise of the past decade. The movies break the rules far more than they’re generally given credit for, getting progressively more radical as they’ve gone along. This is, after all, a big budget, tentpole franchise where human beings are the bad guys – they’re increasingly presented as brutal, arrogant, cruel and largely deserving of being wiped off the planet.

The three movies have been about the rise of a new civilisation, becoming increasingly confident in having non-human heroes, and that the audience won’t mind siding with the apes against humanity. It’s an oddly radical thing for them to have done. They’ve also become more confident in their moral complexity. Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes was essentially about an insurgency from the point of view of the insurgents, using the fact that it was apes and humans to hide the fact that its strongest parallels were about America had done in Iraq and Afghanistan. New War For The Planet Of The Apes Trailer – Caesar and the apes are taking over

May 16, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes surprised many when it turned out to be a pretty good origin story. Then the franchise really upped the game with the excellent Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes. That means the next instalment, War Of The Planet Of The Apes, has a lot to live up to. And from the evidence of this new trailer, it might be a rather dark tale, but also one with plenty of action and intrgue.

Lost In London Trailer – Take a look A Woody Harrelson’s live movie

April 19, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

There have been feature-films shot in one take before, but early this year Woody Harrelson decided to take this one step further. Not content with making a film with one camera in a single unbroken take, he decided it should be transmitted live to cinemas at the same time.

That meant that only a limited amount of people got to see it at the time, but now it’s heading for a wider release, so everyone can take a look at at Lost In London. The movie got pretty good reviews on its live debut, and the new trailer certainly makes it look fun.

In the film Woody plays a fictionalised version of himself, as he makes his way across London as he becomes the subject of a tabloid scandal and discovers that even his fame can’t help him. The likes of Owen Wilson and even Willie Nelson co-star.

The movie will be in certain cinemas in the UK from late April, with a screening plus Q&A with Harrelson on April 30th. You can fin out more at Picturehouses.co.uk.  [Read more…]
