Vice Trailer – Christian Bale transforms into former Vice President Dick Cheney

October 7, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

For a long time Adam McKay was just about comedy,  making movies with Will Ferrell such as Anchorman, Talladega Nights, Step Brothers and The Other Guys. However, recently he’s been stretching his wings with the likes of The Big Short (for which he received two Oscar nominations) and now Vice.

The movie features another of Christian Bale’s trademark transformations, so he can play Vice President Dick Cheney. He stars alongside Amy Adams, Steve Carell and Sam Rockwell.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘VICE explores the epic story about how a bureaucratic Washington insider quietly became the most powerful man in the world as Vice-President to George W. Bush, reshaping the country and the globe in ways that we still feel today.’ Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (DVD Review) – Robbed of the Best Picture Oscar?

May 30, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Frances McDormand, Woody Harrelson, Sam Rockwell, Caleb Landry Jones, Lucas Hedges
Director: Martin McDonagh
Running Time: 110 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: Out Now

For many Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri seemed to be the smart bet to win the Best Picture Oscar. While The Shape Of Water had made the early running, Three Billboards gained momentum through the Award season and seemed like it might cruise to a victory. In the end it didn’t get the big gong, although it did win for the exceptionally strong performance of Frances McDormand and Sam Rockwell. Many were also surprised it lost for writer/director Martin McDonagh’s screenplay, although it is a couple of issues with that screenplay that may be the reason it didn’t win the biggest award.

McDormand plays the hard-bitten Mildred, a woman filled with anger at the local police’s inability to catch whoever was responsible for the rape and murder of her daughter. To try and force the authorities into action she hires three billboards on a rural road, putting up massive posters asking why there have been no arrests and specifically calling out police chief Willoughby (Woody Harrelson). The Shape Of Water Scores 13 Oscar Nominations, While Call Me By Your Name Gets Four

January 23, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The Academy Of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences has announced this year’s Oscar nominees. In most years that would help solidify which films were the absolute frontrunners, but this remains one of the most open Oscar races for years. Guillermo Del Toro’s excellent The Shape Of Water leads the pack with an impressive 13 nominations (one short of the record of 14 nominations shared by Titanic, All About Eve and La La Land). However, that doesn’t mean it’s a shoo-in for the big awards, as many feel the likes of Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay and the acting category are likely to go to other movies.

Just to show how open a race it is, the second highest number of nominations went to Dunkirk, with eight, but few expect that film to pick up anything outsie the technical categories. More likely to be picking up some of the big gongs is Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, which scored seven nominations, including Best Film, Best Actress for Frances McDormand and Best Supporting Actor for Sam Rockwell (many feel Rockwell is the most likely to win of all the acting nominess, but even with him there’s controversy over his character’s racism). However, despite many feeling Three Billboards has an extremely good shot at winning Best Picture, Martin McDonagh failed to get a Best Director nomination.

After several years of criticism for its lack of diversity, this year’s nominations did make some small steps towards sexual and racial equality, particularly in the Best Director category. McDonagh may have missed out on a Best Director nomination, but so did Steven Spielberg and several other major contenders. Instead, Jordan Peele is now the fifth African-American director to ever score a Best Director nomination for Get Out (none has ever won), while Greta Gerwig is the fifth woman in the same category (only Kathryn Bigelow has won). And following anger at how few black actors scored nominations in the last few years, this year Denzel Washington (Roman J. Israel, Esq.) and Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out) were nominated for Best Actor, while Mary J. Blige (Mudbound) and Octavia Spencer (The Shape Of Water) are included in the Best Supporting Actress category.

Many have also noted there seems to have been swift professional retribution for James Franco, who emerged as one of the Best Actor frontrunners following his Golden Globe win for The Disaster Artist. However, he’s since been embroiled in allegations of harrassment and innapropriate behaviour, and has now failed to score a Best Actor Oscar nomination.

LGBT hopes were always going to be led by Call Me By Your Name. While it’s not been quite the awards powerhouse it looked like it might be early in the season, the gay romance nevertheless scored four nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Original Song and Best Screenplay. While many feel its best chance of a gong is for gay elder statesman James Ivory’s masterful screenplay, the Best Actor nomination for Timothee Chalamet is notable for another reason. At just 22 he’s the youngest Best Actor nominee since Mickey Rooney in 1939, and third youngest ever.

Many will be disappointed that there was no nomination for Armie Hammer. However, while he was the early frontrunner in the Best Supporting Actor category, others have since crowded him out – despite the fact in many other years there’s a good chance he’d have won.

Elsewhere the wonderful Chilean trans-themed film, A Fantastic Woman was nominated in the Best Foreign Language film category, while Richard Jenkins was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for playing a gay character in The Shape Of Water.

Take a look at the full list of nominations below. [Read more…]

New Poltergeist Trailer – The evil forces still don’t like suburban families

April 3, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Poltergeist-Poster-slideIt’s just a couple of months until we get to see what the reimagining of Poltergeist hits cinemas, with many people still unsure whether taking on the 1982 classic was worth it. The first trailer helped many get over an innate dislike of the entire idea of the movie, but there’s still a lot of fence sitting.

Now a new trailer has arrived.

The movie follow Eric and Amy Bowen (Sam Rockwell and Rosemarie DeWitt), who move into a suburban home with their 8-year-old daughter Madison (Kennedi Clements). As you’d expect, there are some supernatural entities that don’t want them there and end up abducting Madison. Jared Harris plays the supernatural researcher brought in to help.

The film is described as a contemporary update of the original, with producer Sam Raimi commenting, “The original film commented on how we’ve let television get out of control, babysitting our kids. It’s only gotten worse with the handheld portable devices. Screens are everywhere.” Gil Kenan directs. [Read more…]

Poltergeist-PosterSome people may been pretty annoyed about the idea of a Poltergeist remake, but it seems the first trailer is keen assuage some fears by suggesting the do-over has no intention of trying to reinvent the wheel, while also showing that it may have plenty of entertainment to offer.

Indeed Gil Kenan’s film looks surprisingly good.

And just in case you aren’t 100% sure, there’s also both US and international trailers, which feature different footage and are both worth a look. You can see them below.

Laggies Trailer – Keira Knightley has a crisis and teams up with Chloe Moretz

July 16, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

laggies-slideWhen Keira Knightley stepped in for Anne Hathaway in Laggies, it didn’t bode well for the movie, but now we can get out first taste of whether she does a the British actress does a good job with the role, as the trailer has arrived.

Don’t get too excited though, as it got rather middling reviews on its Sundance debut.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Having spent her twenties comfortably inert, 28 year old Megan (Keira Knightley) reaches a crisis when she finds herself squarely in adulthood with no career prospects, no particular motivation to pursue any and no one to relate to, including her high school boyfriend (Mark Webber). When he proposes, Megan panics and given an opportunity to escape – at least temporarily – she hides out in the home of her new friend, 16-year-old Annika (Chloë Grace Moretz) and Annika’s world-weary single dad (Sam Rockwell).’

Sam Rockwell Up For Indie Thriler The Eel

January 20, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

sam-rockwellSam Rockwell has nabbed himself a new role, as Deadline reports that he’s signed up to star in the indie drama The Eel. The movie will reunite him with The Way, Way Back producers Kevin J. Walsh, Nat Faxon and Jim Rash.

Roberto Bentivegna is set to write and direct the movie, the script for which ended up in The Black List in 2012, which is about an escaped convict (Rockwell) who is drawn into a corrupt sheriff’s plot to kidnap the heiress of an oil fortune, which complicates his quest for freedom.

Kevin J. Walsh commented,”Nat, Jim and I want to foster other directors and writers with this new company, and Roberto’s film gives Sam the role of a criminal on the run that reminded us of Drive and Cool Hand Luke. The Way, Way Back was also a Black List script, and that one had everyone from Alexander Payne to Thomas Bezucha and Shawn Levy in the mix but it took us eight years to core it down and take a grass roots approach to get it made, and that’s what we’re doing here. Last year’s festival was insane, the movie screened at 3, and by the time we got off the stage after the Q&A, I turned on my phone and had 500 e-mails and five offers, already at $4 million. My fiancé and my friends from Boston were here, and while I got them to the party, I went right to the condo with the financiers, CAA and WME, and we didn’t leave the condo until 6 in the morning. I woke up the filmmakers to tell them this film we’d made for $4.75 million had sold for $9.75 million domestic and $11.3 million with foreign. Given how long it took to get it made, it was an unforgettable night.”

The movie will shoot this autumn.
