April 3, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Poltergeist-Poster-slideIt’s just a couple of months until we get to see what the reimagining of Poltergeist hits cinemas, with many people still unsure whether taking on the 1982 classic was worth it. The first trailer helped many get over an innate dislike of the entire idea of the movie, but there’s still a lot of fence sitting.

Now a new trailer has arrived.

The movie follow Eric and Amy Bowen (Sam Rockwell and Rosemarie DeWitt), who move into a suburban home with their 8-year-old daughter Madison (Kennedi Clements). As you’d expect, there are some supernatural entities that don’t want them there and end up abducting Madison. Jared Harris plays the supernatural researcher brought in to help.

The film is described as a contemporary update of the original, with producer Sam Raimi commenting, “The original film commented on how we’ve let television get out of control, babysitting our kids. It’s only gotten worse with the handheld portable devices. Screens are everywhere.” Gil Kenan directs. [Read more…]

Rosemarie DeWitt Signs Up For Poltergeist Remake

July 24, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

rosemarie-dewittA Poltergeist remake has been in the works for a couple of years, but now it finally looks like it’s moving forward with the news that Rosemarie Dewitt has signed up to star. The search for a male lead is currently under way, according to Deadline.

News of the the project first emerged back in February 2011, when MGM announced a spate of potential remakes and other projects, after the studio came out of bankruptcy. It took a while to sort out, but in March Monster House filmmaker Gil Kenan signed up to direct from a screenplay provided by David Lindsay-Abaire (Oz: The Great and Powerful, Rise of the Guardians). No story details have been released, so it’s not clear how close to the 1982 original it will be. Sam Raimi and Nathan Kahane are producing.

The original Poltergeist, directed by Tobe Hooper from a screenplay by Steven Spielberg, Michael Grais, and Mark Victor, centered on a family haunted by evil entities that were trying to claim control of their daughter. Craig T. Nelson, JoBeth Williams, and Dominique Dunne starred.

Rosemarie DeWitt most recently starred in Promised Land and Touchy Feely. The actress signed on for the female lead in Kill the Messenger last month.

Poltergeist Remake Gets Monster House Director Gil Kenan

March 7, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

poltergeist-dvd-coverEven before MGM’s bankruptcy there was talk of remaking Poltergeist, but it’s been moving very slowly through development. Now it’s got a little more inpetus, as Deadline reports that MGM has brought on director Gil Kenan (Monster House, City of Ember) to helm the movie.

Last November Sam Raimi signed up to producer, with David Lindsay-Abaire rewriting an earlier screenplay by Juliet Snowden and Stiles White. The original 1982 Poltergeist, which starred Craig T. Nelson, JoBeth Williams and Dominique Dunne, centered on a family living in a lovely new house, who are haunted by an evil presence that eventually takes their daughter into another realm. It’s not known if the remake will deviate from the original story, although it will likely be set in present day.

At the moment it hasn’t been revealed when it will shoot.
