For decades four female friends have been getting together for a monthly book club. However, while this started when they were in their youth, they now all facing the fact they’re aging. Diane (Diane Keaton) is a relatively recent widow being pressured by her daughters to move to nearer to them in Arizona, as they think she’s too old to manage by herself. Carol (Mary Steenburgen) is stuck in a rut with her husband, while federal judge Sharon (Candice Bergen) has completely given up on the idea of either love or sex. Finally there’s Vivian (Jane Fonda), a woman who’s never had a problem finding sex but has always disdained the idea of settling down with one person.

Rather than their typical book club novels, the quartet decide to read Fifty Shades Of Grey. After discovering the Red Room shenanigans that Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele get up to, the four women start to shake up their own lives. That may not involve BDSM, but it does set them thinking about what they really want from their remaining years. [Read more…]

Book Club Trailer – Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda & Candice Bergen get into 50 Shades Of Grey

March 4, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

You’ve certainly got to hope that with a cast including Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen, and Mary Steenburgen, Book Club will be a lot of fun. It’s also got a potentially fun concept, with the quartet of actress playing friends who’ve started a book club to improve their minds.

However, they get more than expected when they start reading 50 Shades Of Grey, which opens their minds to new possibilities. Craig T. Nelson, Andy Garcia and Don Johnson also star in the movie, which is due in cinemas in May.

The first trailer for the film has now arrived, which you can take a look at below. [Read more…]

Women He’s Undressed (US Cinema/DVD Review)

July 24, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Angela Lansbury, Cary Grant, Catherine Martin, Jane Fonda
Director: Gillian Armstrong
Running Time: 95 mins
Certificate: NR (US)
Release Date: July 19th 2016 (LA), August 9th 2016 (US DVD/VoD)

Gillian Armstrong is best known for directing the likes of Charlotte Gray, Oscar & Lucinda and Little Women, but here she returns to the documentary arena for a film about Orry-Kelly. It’s not a name you’ll necessarily recognise, although you will probably know some of his work – Ingrid Bergman’s costumes in Casablanca, Marilyn Monroe’s frocks in Some Like It Hot, the western clothes in Oklahoma! and all manner of dresses for Bette Davis.

He won three Oscars (making him Australia’s most prolific Academy Award winner until fellow costume designer Catherine Martin picked up her third and fourth gongs for The Great Gatsby (2013)), and to many in the filmmaking community he’s a bit of a legend. He was also an alcoholic and he was gay, something he didn’t hide but didn’t publicly flaunt either. Rumours suggest he may have had an intimate relationship with Cary Grant when they roomed together shortly after they both arrived in the US, although that’s never been confirmed. [Read more…]

Grace & Frankie – Season 1 (DVD Review)

April 19, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Martin Sheen, Sam Waterston
Director: Various
Running Time: 378 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: April 18th 2016 (UK)

When it was announced that Netflix was reuniting 9 to 5 co-stars Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin for a new online series, it was difficult to see how it could be anything but good. Indeed, the only downside was the lack of Dolly Parton. However, the series itself, Grace & Frankie, turned out to be better than we could have hoped, giving both Tomlin and Fonda plenty of space to show off their talents, while also telling a fun and timely story.

Grace (Fonda) and Frankie (Tomlin) are longtime frenemies, whose different outlooks on life – one a rather high-strung retired businesswoman the other a bit of an earth mother – have meant that the only thing that’s held them together is the fact their husbands (Martin Sheen and Sam Waterston) are longtime friends and business partners. Or at least that’s what the women think, until their hubbies sit them down to explain that actually they’re gay and in love with each other, and plan to move out so they can be together. Grace & Frankie: Season 2 Trailer – Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda and their gay exes are back

April 5, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

GRACE-AND-FRANKIE-S2-KEY-ART-slideLast year Netflix made a concerted effort to make shows that would appeal to a slightly older demographic than the young people the service is known to attract in droves. One of the classiest bits of original programming was Grace & Frankie, starring Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda as two married women approaching old age, who get the shock of their lives when their husbands (Martin Sheen and Sam Waterston) don’t just announce they’re leaving them, but that they’re gay and in a relationship.

Now Season 2 is on its way and the trailer has been released.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘With their ex-hubbies now married to each other and their clans more integrated than ever, Grace and Frankie continue to struggle to make sense of the brave new world that is their lives. Frankie copes by getting more involved in Brianna’s business.’ Take a look at the trailer below.

Season 2 will start streaming on Netflix on May 6th. [Read more…]

Netflix Decides They Want More Grace & Frankie

May 27, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

grace-and-frankie-poster1-slideIt’s only been online a couple of weeks, but Netflix must be feeling they’ve got a hit on their hands with Grace & Frankie, as they’ve already ordered a second season, according to Variety.

It’s not too surprising it’s been a success, as it was co-created by Friends’ Marta Kauffman and stars the impressive quartet of Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Martin Sheen and Sam Waterston. Who wouldn’t want to take a look at that, even if you didn’t know what it was about?

Grace & Frankie is about old friends turned enemies, who suddenly find common ground again when their husbands leave them and run off with one another.

Kauffman comments on getting a follow-up season, “Let me say, it’s so awesome to do a show on Netflix. “Because two and a half weeks after we launched, Miley Cyrus does a tweet about your show, and they call and say, ‘We’d like to do a season two.’ So yes, there is a season two. We have Ted [Sarandos] and Miley to thank.”

Season 2 will hit Netflix in 2016.

Jane Fonda Says She Once Mistakenly Assumed Warren Beatty Was Gay

May 21, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

warren-beatty-youngNowadays Warren Beatty is known for being one of cinema’s greatest ladies men, but it appears he didn’t always come across that way to everyone, as while talking to W Magazine, Jane Fonda says that at one point her gaydar went a bit wonky as she thought he was gay.

And as a blow to his manhood, her assumption didn’t come from looking at him from afar, but was partly due to a 1959 screen test they had together where it appears his kissing didn’t convince her of his love of the ladies. She says of the test that they “were thrown together like two lions in a cage and kissed until we had practically eaten each others’ heads off.”

She admits she doesn’t remember much else about it, but adds, “I thought Warren was gay. He played piano, and all his friends were gay.”

She’s not completely wrong either, as it’s known that his friendships with gay playwrights such as William Inge and Tennessee Williams helped his early career and his transition from the stage to Hollywood, although with the likes of Annette Bening, Natalie Wood, Joan Collins, Julie Christie, Madonna and Diane Keaton as notches on his bedpost, it seems clear his reputation as a ladies man isn’t undeserved.

Fonda was being interviewed about her new Netflix show Grace & Frankie, which sees her and Lily Tomlin playing women dealing with the fact their husbands (Martin Sheen and Sam Waterston) have both come out of the closet and run off with one another.

Jane Fonda Remembers Being The Ultimate Beard For Closeted Famous Gay Men

May 10, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jane-fondaWith Jane Fonda’s new Netflix series, Grace & Frankie debuting, the actress has been chatting with Pridesource about the show, which sees her and Lily Tomlin playing women dealing with the fact their husbands (Martin Sheen and Sam Waterston) have both come out of the closet and run off with one another.

Although Fonda hasn’t experienced quite that scenario, she does have plenty of knowledge of gay men wanting her as both their beard and perhaps as heir attempt at heterosexuality. She says, “When I was young, I was the female that gay guys wanted to try to become heterosexual with. A very famous actor who’s gay – and I will not name names – asked me to marry him. I was very flattered, but I said, ‘Why?’ This was 1964. He wasn’t the only one. It’s very interesting. And I lived for two years with a guy who was trying to become heterosexual.”

It’s perhaps not surprising gay gays were attracted to Fonda, as in the 60s and 70s it was still difficult to be openly gay, especially if you were famous, but Jane was well known for her liberal, progressive views, which included campaigning for gay rights alongside Harvel Milk.

Of him, she says, “He was always smiling and laughing, and he was beloved and he was funny. I was so happy when I was with him. And it was just so much fun going into those gay bars with him – oh my God!”

You can find the full interview over at Pridesource.

Grace & Frankie Trailer – Take a look at Jane Fonda & Lily Tomlin’s gay-themed series

April 9, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

grace-and-frankie-poster1-slideCasts don’t get much better than Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Martin Sheen and Sam Waterston, but that’s who Netflix have managed to get together for the upcoming Grace & Frankie. Now they’re showcasing the series with a trailer and a set of posters which you can see above and blow.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘In Grace and Frankie, Jane Fonda (“Grace”) and Lily Tomlin (“Frankie”) star as two women whose lives are suddenly turned upside down when their husbands reveal they are gay and leave them for each other. Both sparring partners and partners-in-crime, they form an unlikely bond to face an uncertain future together and discover a new definition of “family,” with laughter, tears and plenty of mood enhancers along the way.

‘From executive producers Marta Kauffman (“Friends”) and Howard J. Morris (“Home Improvement”), the hilarious and heartbreaking comedy takes on aging with gusto – from joint pain to joint rolling and blind dates to night blindness – and offers a poignant look at how life’s turning points show us who we really are. March 31, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

grace-and-frankie-pic1How would to longtime female friends react if their husbands ran off with one another in their autumn years? Now the first image from the show have arrived, along with a commentary from Fonda and Tomlin about what they show us.

Here’s the one for the picture above:

Lily: They did a great job by mixing seaweed into my hairdo.
Jane: More like a hair don’t. It suits you, though. Nice and salty.

Here’s the synopsis and then take a look at a few more pics below that: ‘Grace and Frankie stars Jane Fonda (“Grace”) and Lily Tomlin (“Frankie”) as a pair of frenemies whose lives are turned upside down – and permanently intertwined – when their husbands leave them for each other. From executive producers Marta Kaufmann (“Friends”) and Howard Morris (“Home Improvement”), the funny and fearless series takes on aging with gusto, as Grace and Frankie face starting over in their 70s in a 21st Century world, from facelifts to Facebook, joint pain to joint rolling and blind dates to night blindness.
