Mahershala Ali Gives Impassioned Speech Against Persecution After His SAG Award Win For Moonlight

January 30, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Mahershala Ali’s chances of winning the Best Supporting Actor Oscar just increased significantly, as the acting winners of the SAG Awards often mimic the eventual winners of the Academy Awards. That’s not surprising as the Academy’s membership has far more actors than any other film discipline and there’s a large crossover of voting members.

However, it wasn’t just Ali’s win for role in the gay-themed movie Moonlight that had people talking (he also won as part of the ensemble for the movie Hidden Figures), but also his impassioned speech as a Muslim man winning an award shortly after Trump’s executive order preventing travel for people from several Muslim-majority countries. “I think what I’ve learned from working on Moonlight is we see what happens when you persecute people,” he said.

Ali continued, “They fold into themselves—what I was so grateful about in having the opportunity to play Juan was playing a gentleman who saw a young man folding into himself, as the result of the persecution of his community, and taking the opportunity to uplift him, tell him that he mattered, that he was okay, accept him. And I hope that we do a better job of that.

“When we get caught up in the minutiae, the details that make us all different, there’s two ways of seeing that. You can see the texture of that person, the qualities that make them unique, or you can go to war about it, say, ’That person is different from me, I don’t like you, so let’s battle.’”

He then added his own personal story, saying, “My mother is an ordained minister. I’m a Muslim. She didn’t do backflips when I called her to tell her I converted 17 yrs ago. But I tell you now, you put things to the side and I’m able to see her and she’s able to see me. We love each other. The love has grown. And that stuff is minutia. It’s not that important.”

Ali plays drug dealer Juan in Moonlight, who take a persecuted young, gay man under his wing.

While Mahershala didn’t mention Trump by name, Lily Tomlin, who received a lifetime achievement award was slightly more forthright, saying, “Any activist should really talk about how to mount some kind of legislation against whatever it is that they are opposed to. You’ve got to change the laws, just like he’s changing… I don’t wanna make this comparison—but the Nazis, they changed the laws if they didn’t agree with them. They just changed them and they could do whatever they wanted.”

You can take a look at Mahershala Ali’s speech below. [Read more…]

Grace & Frankie – Season 1 (DVD Review)

April 19, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Martin Sheen, Sam Waterston
Director: Various
Running Time: 378 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: April 18th 2016 (UK)

When it was announced that Netflix was reuniting 9 to 5 co-stars Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin for a new online series, it was difficult to see how it could be anything but good. Indeed, the only downside was the lack of Dolly Parton. However, the series itself, Grace & Frankie, turned out to be better than we could have hoped, giving both Tomlin and Fonda plenty of space to show off their talents, while also telling a fun and timely story.

Grace (Fonda) and Frankie (Tomlin) are longtime frenemies, whose different outlooks on life – one a rather high-strung retired businesswoman the other a bit of an earth mother – have meant that the only thing that’s held them together is the fact their husbands (Martin Sheen and Sam Waterston) are longtime friends and business partners. Or at least that’s what the women think, until their hubbies sit them down to explain that actually they’re gay and in love with each other, and plan to move out so they can be together. Grace & Frankie: Season 2 Trailer – Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda and their gay exes are back

April 5, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

GRACE-AND-FRANKIE-S2-KEY-ART-slideLast year Netflix made a concerted effort to make shows that would appeal to a slightly older demographic than the young people the service is known to attract in droves. One of the classiest bits of original programming was Grace & Frankie, starring Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda as two married women approaching old age, who get the shock of their lives when their husbands (Martin Sheen and Sam Waterston) don’t just announce they’re leaving them, but that they’re gay and in a relationship.

Now Season 2 is on its way and the trailer has been released.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘With their ex-hubbies now married to each other and their clans more integrated than ever, Grace and Frankie continue to struggle to make sense of the brave new world that is their lives. Frankie copes by getting more involved in Brianna’s business.’ Take a look at the trailer below.

Season 2 will start streaming on Netflix on May 6th. [Read more…]

Grandma Trailer – Lily Tomlin turns lesbian rocker going on a road trip (with Laverne Cox onboard too)

June 20, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

lily-tomlin-julia-garner-grandmaAs if Lily Tomlin as a lesbian, bohemian grandmother wasn’t enough to ensure Grandma was worth a watch, the trailer also gives us the prospect of Laverne Cox as a tatooist plying her art on the comedienne.

In the film, ‘Self-described misanthrope Elle Reid (Tomlin) has her protective bubble burst when her 18-year-old granddaughter, Sage (Julia Garner), shows up needing help. The two of them go on a day-long journey that causes Elle to come to terms with her past and Sage to confront her future’

What that synopsis doesn’t mention is that the help Sage need is $600 to fund an abortion.

EW debuted the trailer, which you can take a look at below. Grandma reaches US cinemas on August 21st. [Read more…]

Netflix Decides They Want More Grace & Frankie

May 27, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

grace-and-frankie-poster1-slideIt’s only been online a couple of weeks, but Netflix must be feeling they’ve got a hit on their hands with Grace & Frankie, as they’ve already ordered a second season, according to Variety.

It’s not too surprising it’s been a success, as it was co-created by Friends’ Marta Kauffman and stars the impressive quartet of Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Martin Sheen and Sam Waterston. Who wouldn’t want to take a look at that, even if you didn’t know what it was about?

Grace & Frankie is about old friends turned enemies, who suddenly find common ground again when their husbands leave them and run off with one another.

Kauffman comments on getting a follow-up season, “Let me say, it’s so awesome to do a show on Netflix. “Because two and a half weeks after we launched, Miley Cyrus does a tweet about your show, and they call and say, ‘We’d like to do a season two.’ So yes, there is a season two. We have Ted [Sarandos] and Miley to thank.”

Season 2 will hit Netflix in 2016.

Grace & Frankie Trailer – Take a look at Jane Fonda & Lily Tomlin’s gay-themed series

April 9, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

grace-and-frankie-poster1-slideCasts don’t get much better than Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Martin Sheen and Sam Waterston, but that’s who Netflix have managed to get together for the upcoming Grace & Frankie. Now they’re showcasing the series with a trailer and a set of posters which you can see above and blow.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘In Grace and Frankie, Jane Fonda (“Grace”) and Lily Tomlin (“Frankie”) star as two women whose lives are suddenly turned upside down when their husbands reveal they are gay and leave them for each other. Both sparring partners and partners-in-crime, they form an unlikely bond to face an uncertain future together and discover a new definition of “family,” with laughter, tears and plenty of mood enhancers along the way.

‘From executive producers Marta Kauffman (“Friends”) and Howard J. Morris (“Home Improvement”), the hilarious and heartbreaking comedy takes on aging with gusto – from joint pain to joint rolling and blind dates to night blindness – and offers a poignant look at how life’s turning points show us who we really are. Lily Tomlin Talks About Her Reasons For Waiting To Come Out

December 6, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Lily-tomlinComedienne/actress Lily Tomlin spent much of her career in an interesting netherworld where pretty much everyone knew she was gay, her resume was full of LGBT and gay-friendly projects and there were even several occasions when it was said she was going to publicly come out –  except that she didn’t. It’s only been in the last couple of years that she’s spoken openly about her sexuality, and since then she’s also gotten married.

So why did she wait? Well, talking to the Washington Post she says, ‘I wanted to be acknowledged for my work. I didn’t want to be that gay person who does comedy.’

Tomlin certainly has an interesting history in the semi-closet. For example, she was offered the cover of Time magazine way back in 1975 to announce her sexuality, but she turned it down. There was also a bit of controversy in 1995 when she narrated the documentary The Celluloid Closet. The filmmakers suggested that to coincide with the movie’s release Lily was going to come out, but then she didn’t.

Through most of it she’s been with the same woman, Jane Wagner, her partner of over four decades, who she married last New Year’s Eve. She says of her marriage ‘We upped and did it. We thought we should get married because we can.’

Lily Tomlin Will Be The First Out Lesbian To Receive The Kennedy Center Honors

September 9, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Lily-tomlinThere is little doubt that the Kennedy Center Honors – given to those in the performing arts for their lifetime contribution – is one of the highest accolades in the US for actors, singers, composers, dancers and other artists. However no openly gay woman has ever been given the award – until now, that is.

It’s been announced that actress and comedian Lily Tomlin will be one of the five recipients of this year’s honors, alongside singer Al Green, actor and filmmaker Tom Hanks, ballerina Patricia McBride, and singer-songwriter Sting.

There have been previous female honorees who’ve been rumoured to be gay or bisexual, but Tomlin will be first one who out, and certainly the first one married to another woman.

It’s perhaps particularly surprising as the Kennedy Center hasn’t shied away from honoring gay and bisexual men, ranging from Tennessee Williams to Elton John, but for some reason no openly lesbian has previously been given the award.

Kennedy Center chairman David M. Rubenstein comments, “From the days of her early television and theatrical appearances, Lily Tomlin has made us laugh and continues to amaze us with her acting talent and quick wit.”

The Kennedy Center Honors medallions willbe presented on Saturday, December 6th, at a State Department dinner hosted by Secretary of State John Kerry. On the Sunday there will be a White House Reception where Tomlin and co. will meet the President ahead of the Honors Gala in the evening, which will be recorded for a two-hour primetime TV special to be braodcast on Tuesday, December 30th at 9:00 pm.

Martin Sheen Will Be A Gay Husband In Jane Fonda & Lily Tomlin’s New Netflix Comedy

June 21, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Martin-SheenBack in March it was announced that Jane Fonda & Lily Tomlin had signed up to reteam for a new comedy for Netflix, and now another entertainment industry luminary is joining them, and he’ll be playing gay, according to THR.

Martin Sheen has signed up for the 13-episode series, which is called Grace and Frankie.

The show focuses on the titular nemeses, Grace (Fonda) and Frankie (Tomlin), who are facing the last chapter of their lives, though not in the way they expected. Their husbands announce they are in love with each other and plan to get married. Unsurrisingly the women find their lives both turned upside down and – to their dismay – permanently intertwined. Eventually, to their surprise, they find they have each other.

Now we know Sheen will be one of the hubbys, Robert, who is married to Fonda’s character, but doesn’t want to be anymore.
