Brad Pitt Says Gay Marriage Is ‘Inevitable’

September 10, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A couple of months ago there was a bit of a furore over a letter Brad Pitt’s mom sent to her local newspaper, where she said Barack Obama’s support for marriage equality was one good reason not to vote for him.

However Brad’s support for both Obama and gay marriage is undimmed, telling The Telegraph at a recent screening of his forthcoming film Killing Them Softly, that ‘Gay marriage is inevitable. The next generation, they get it. It is just a matter of time before it becomes a reality.’ He adds, ‘I am an Obama supporter and I’m backing his election campaign.’

While that that means he and his mom and going to have to agree to disagree, Brad has long shown his support for equality, releasing messages in support of New York enacting equal marriage legislation, starring in a reading of Dustin Lance’s Black play 8 and vowing not to marry Angelina Jolie until everyone can wed (although he’s since said he might not be able to keep to that one).

The Weight Takes LGBT Prize At The Venice Film Festival

September 10, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While we don’t normally think of South Korea producing gay-themed films, in recent years a few have emerged from the country, revealing a country still coming to terms with having openly LGBT people. Now one movie from the nation has picked up the 6th Queer Lion Award at the Venice Film Festival, according to THR.

The Weight, from director Jeon Kyu-hwan, is a drama about a young hunchback man living a solitary life working in a morgue, who fantasises about the lives of the corpses he meets, and the clashes between his adoptive mother and transgender stepbrother.

Other films in competition include Brian De Palma’s Passion; Den Skaldede Frisor (All You Need is Love) from Susanne Bier; Xan Cassavetes’ Kiss of the Damned; Acciaio (Steel) from Stefano Mordini; Pascal Bonitzer’s Cherchez Hortense (Looking for Hortense); and 6 Sull’Autobus (6 On the Bus), which features six parallel stories from different Italian directors: Simone Dante Antonelli, Giacomo Bisordi, Rita de Donato, Irene di Lelio, Antonio Ligas, and Emiliano Russo.

The award is open to the best film in the official selection, either in or out-of-competition, or in any of the festival’s three main sidebars, and must ‘accurately portray lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender characters.’

Documentary On Gay Siblings Seeks Funding

September 8, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Many people will have grown up the only gay person in their family, but what about when at least one of your brothers or sisters is also gay? That’s what the documentary Gay Siblings wants to explore, and the filmmakers are currently looking for funding for the first major phase of filming through an Indiegogo campaign.

The documentary will comes from the team of Liz Collier and Cat McShane (who have 20 combined years of documentary filmmaking experience between them), with the latter knowing a fair bit about the subject as she’s the younger of two gay siblings. According to a release, ‘this film will zig-zag across the globe to investigate the rarely explored phenomenon of gay siblings, delving deep into the heart of the gloriously messy and complex world of 21st Century family and telling the stories of extraordinary queer families.

‘From two families with four gay bothers and sisters at their heart, to an upper class mum who took to the Daily Mail to tell the world about her gay daughters, Italian queer triplets with a unique family business and gay twins sister coming to terms with one of them transitioning, our stories open a window on the changing face of family.

‘It is a warm portrait of people’s passionate stories and a unique platform to explore current gay civil rights issues including the fight for gay marriage, same sex parenting and the search for the gay gene.’

The IndieGoGo campaign is currently looking for $7,500, and as usual is offering various rewards depending on how much you give. This money would go towards filming in the United States, where some of our key contributors are based, and key filming in the UK.  Events and interviews include a once-in-a-lifetime family gathering of one of our highest multiple gay sibling families and interviews with some of the world’s leading geneticists working in the field of gay genetics.

If you’d like to help, watch the film above and head over to IndieGoGo.

Is Drew Barrymore Buying A West Hollywood Gay Bar?

September 8, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While you might be surprised to hear most celebrities had bought a gay club, with Drew Barrymore it’s perhaps more surprising she doesn’t already have one. According to the National Enquirer (so possibly not true), she’s purchased the Revolver nightspot, which features scantily clad male go-go dancers.

The Enquirer quotes a source saying that Barrymore ‘loves the gay scene’ and allegedly has her sights on another nearby watering hole called Eleven, which she and her friends would like to own.

If you live in LA, don’t rush down and expect to find her behind the bar, as the Gossip Cop website says her representtive denies Barrymore is buying either joint, although her business associate does own Revolver and is looking into taking over Eleven.

Lana Wachowski Talks For The First Time About Gender Transition

September 6, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Lana Wachowski recently made her first official on-screen appearance since transitioning from male to female in a video promoting her upcoming movie Cloud Atlas, which she directed alongside brother Andy and Tom Twyker. Now she’s given her first interview about the difficulties she faced while changing genders.

Talking to the New Yorker, she says, “For years, I couldn’t even say the words ‘transgendered’ or ‘transexual’. When I began to admit it to myself, I knew that I would eventually have to tell my parents, and my brother and my sisters. The fact would inject such terror in me that I would not sleep for days.”

However since starting to live as a woman and openly accepting her sexuality, she’s found greater contentment, saying, “I chose to change my exterior to bring it closer into alignment with my interior… My biggest fears were all about losing my family. Once they accepted me, everything else has been a piece of cake.”

It’s not a complete tell-all though, as she says, ”I know that many people are dying to know if I have a surgically constructed vagina or not, but I prefer to keep this information between my wife and me.”

While the major aspects of Lana’s transition were complete by 2007, this is the first time she’s spoken about it. Indeed, ever since the first Matrix movie, both Wachowski siblings have notoriously shied away from interviews and publicity, although the seemingly now much happier Lana appears to be embracing appearing on screen and talking to journalists in a way she hasn’t for the past decade.

Cloud Atlas opens in the UK on March 22nd, 2013.

Susan Sarandon Feels ‘It’s Not A Big Deal’ To Play Bisexual

September 6, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Ever since the beginning of her career, Susan Sarandon has been fine appearing in movies that explore sexuality and gender, whether it’s The Rocky Horror Picture Show, The Hunger or Thelma & Louise. In her latest movie, Jeff Who Lives At Home, which hits UK DVD on September 17th, she plays a middle-aged woman who realises that she’s attracted to women as well as men.

She’s been talking to Metro about the movie and her attitude to sexuality, saying, “It doesn’t matter the age, race, gender of the person you choose to be with. What’s difficult is being intimate with another human being. Once you learn to do that, the rest is just details.

“There are so many people who found themselves in unforeseen situations. Where you come down on the sexual spectrum is very flexible but it takes courage to be vulnerable to another person – that’s the big step that has to be taken.”

As for her character realising her attraction to women, she adds, “I don’t think it’s that big a deal. I could imagine that happening. It has to do with finding that person and once you set limits of age, gender, finances – you’re ruling out a lot of possibility.”

Gay Movie Banned From Egyptian Film Festival

September 6, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

In what may be a hint towards a more hardline approach to on-screen sex and homosexuality in the new Egypt, the censorship committee of the 35th Cairo International Film Festival has banned a movie dealing with gay themes, along with two others, one of which dealt with adultery and the other had scenes of sex and nudity.

Previously contentious films have been allowed into the festival, although those with sex were normally only shown to critics and journalists. While Al-Ahram reported the news, they weren’t able to find out exactly which movies have been banned.

Although homosexuality isn’t illegal in Egypt, the authorities have certainly made it difficult for gay people, often targeting them under public order and morals laws. While the Muslim Botherhood, which won recent elections in the country, has embraced democracy, the likelihood of them making life easier for gay people seems unlikely, and some wonder whether banning the film was due to pressure from the government.

The 35th Cairo International Film Festival is one of the most important cinematic events in the Arab world and is set to take place in late November this year.

A Liar’s Autobiography Trailer – An anarchic animated take on Python Graham Chapman’s life

September 4, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Monty Python’s Graham Chapman was a bit of a unique character, so it is perhaps fitting that he’s made a new movie, 23 years after he died. It’s the sort of silliness he’d have loved. The animated film is based on his recently uncovered reading of his memoir, A Liar’s Autobiography. The movie, directed by Terry Jones’ son, also features the voices of the other Pythons (except Eric Idle), with 14 different animation companies working on various parts of the film to tell the story of the great gay comedy performer. It looks suitably anarchic and could well be a fascinating ride, as Chapman was certainly an interesting guy.

Richard Gere Says He Took American Gigolo Role Due To Gay Subtext

September 3, 2012 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Back in the early 1980s, it was generally seen as career suicide to ‘play gay’, but that didn’t mean stars weren’t interested in roles with a bit of homoerotic subtext. That seems to be true of Richard Gere, who’s told EW that one of the reasons he chose to star in American Gigolo was because of its gay themes.

In an interview that takes in his thought on many of his most popular films, he says, “Paul [Schrader, the film’s writer and director] came to see me in Malibu and said, ‘You’ve got to say yes to this by tomorrow at the latest.’ I read it and I thought, ‘This is a character I don’t know very well. I don’t own a suit. He speaks languages; I don’t speak any languages. There’s kind of a gay thing that’s flirting through it and I didn’t know the gay community at all.’ I wanted to immerse myself in all of that and I had literally two weeks. So I just dove in. If I recall, [the nudity] wasn’t in the script. It was just in the natural process of making the movie. I certainly felt vulnerable, but I think it’s different for men than women.”

The reason Gere only had two weeks is that John Travolta dropped out shortly before shooting was set to begin (perhaps even back then he was trying to avoid the gay rumours that have followed him around for decades). Indeed Gere has a lot to thank Travolta for, as it was the Grease star dropping out of American Gigolo, Days Of Heaven and An Officer And A Gentleman that essentially handed Richard his career.

American Gigolo is about a man who makes his money as an escort to wealthy older women, but whose life gets complicated when one of his clients is murdered. The same year as Gigolo was released, Gere took to the Broadway stage in the play Bent, about gay people in a Nazi concentration camp, which at the time was seen as a brave move for a young actor of the verge of stardom.

How To Survive A Plague Poster Revealed

September 1, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A couple of weeks ago we posted the trailer for the powerful new documentary How To Survive A Plague, about the early days of AIDS epidemic and the brave people who took a stand and forced change. The film reaches US cinemas on September 21st (but as yet it doesn’t appear a UK release has been set), and ahead of that a new poster has been released.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘HOW TO SURVIVE A PLAGUE is the story of the brave young men and women who successfully reversed the tide of an epidemic, demanded the attention of a fearful nation and stopped AIDS from becoming a death sentence. This improbable group of activists bucked oppression and, with no scientific training, infiltrated government agencies and the pharmaceutical industry, helping to identify promising new medication and treatments and move them through trials and into drugstores in record time. In the process, they saved their own lives and ended the darkest days of a veritable plague, while virtually emptying AIDS wards in American hospitals in the process. The powerful story of their fight is a classic tale of empowerment and activism that has since inspired movements for change in everything from breast cancer research to Occupy Wall Street. Their story stands as a powerful inspiration to future generations, a road map, and a call to arms. This is how you change the world.

‘Official Selection: Sundance Film Festival, New Directors/New films, San Francisco International FF, Provincetown FF, Outfest Documentary Centerpiece, Seattle International FF’
