See Outfest’s Director Talk About The Impact Of LGBT Film

July 13, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Outfest, LA’s LGBT film festival
, which is undoubtedly one of the biggest and most important in the world, opened its 30th event last night with a screening of the documentary Vito and an honour for John Waters.

The Advocate has posted a new interview with Outfest’s Executive director, Kirsten Schaffer, who talks about the importance of LGBT movies and festivals, which is particularly relevant at a time when some are wondering whether gay themes have become mainstream enough that we no longer need such events. It’s well worth a watch, so can look above to see Schaffer’s take on things.

Angelina Jolie Reported Furious About Brad Pitt’s Mom’s Anti-Gay Letter

July 12, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Quite a few feathers were ruffled last week, when Brad Pitt’s mother, Jane, wrote a letter to her local newspaper, which said Obama’s support for gay rights was a good reason to vote for Mitt Romney in the Presidential election.

LGBT ally Brad hasn’t said anything publicly about this, although his brother, Doug, did address it during an interview on NBC’s The Today Show, saying, “Moms and dads and kids agree to disagree all over the world, so why would our family be any different?”

Now Star Magazine (via RadarOnline) reports that Angelina Jolie is ‘mortified’ about the letter. A source reportedly told them, “Jane has never wanted to talk politics with Angelina. She knew it would cause greater issues for them and she wanted to try to have a relationship with the mother of her grandkids. She never thought her letter would be such a big deal.’

The source adds that Brad just wants to ignore the issues, but “If Brad won’t do it, Angelina will have to take matters into her own hands and talk to Jane about how, as the mother of such a prominent celebrity, she shouldn’t be writing letters that clash with her son’s personal opinions… It’ll inevitably end up in a huge blowout, with Brad stuck in the middle. Brad keeps telling her not to take this so seriously, but when Angie sets her mind on something, there’s no talking her out of it.”

Brad is a staunch supporter of LGBT rights, having donated $100,000 to the fight against Proposition 8 in California, which sought to ban equal marriage, and having written in support of New York approving same sex wedding last years.

In her letter, Jane Pitt wrote, “Any Christian should spend much time in prayer before refusing to vote for a family man with high morals, business experience, who is against abortion, and shares Christian conviction concerning homosexuality just because he is a Mormon.”

As with all stories in gossip mags attributed to ‘sources’, there’s no guarantee this one is true, but knowing the forthright and very, very pro-LGBT Angelina, she probably wasn’t pleased about her mother-in-law’s letter.

Lesbianism In Black Swan Is The Most Complained About Film Scene In The UK In 2011

July 12, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

In its annual reports the BBFC (British Board Of Film Classification) has revealed that Black Swan was the most complained about movie of 2011, with most of the 40 letters written to the body about the film disliking the lesbian oral sex scene between Mila Kunis and Natalie Portman.

The BBFC is keen to point out, however, that 40 complaints versus the 2.7 million who saw the film is a very small proportion. The report states, ‘While the scene is visually discreet, narratively justified and within the 15 Guidelines criteria, some correspondents felt it was pornographic in nature. That it was a sex scene between two women was an aggravating factor for some who argued that portrayals of homosexual activity should either be restricted to the 18 category, or not shown at all. However, the BBFC in line with broad public opinion, applies the same standards to portrayals of sexual activity, regardless of sexual orientation.’

There also seems to have been a disconnect between people’s expectations and Black Swan itself, with many thinking they were going to get a movie about Swan Lake, and instead getting a dark, psychosexual thriller with homosexual aspects. The film won Natalie Portman the Best Actress Oscar.

Bangladeshi Transgender Film, Common Gender, Finds Success

July 11, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While transgender people, known as hijra, are not uncommon in Bangladesh, they are generally treated as being part of the far edges of society, and ignored by the mainstream. However, after film director Norman Robin saw a transgender person being attacked for using a female toilet in a shopping mall, he was inspired to make a film in the hope of spreading awareness about the prejudice hijra face.

The movie, Common Gender, is the first Bangladeshi movie about transgender people. While many wondered if it would find an audience, since it was released a couple of weeks ago, it’s become a bit of a hit. The film’s distributor, Enamul Karim, told AFP that, ‘We opted to release the movie only in six cinemas in the first week as it lacked big stars and some labelled it as an art-house movie. But it’s a resounding success so far. It is pulling in crowds and other cinemas are taking it up.’

The movie is abou Sushmita, a transgender woman who falls in love with a Hindu boy, However the boy’s parents refuse to accept Sushmita, which eventually leads to her suicide. Now that Common Gender has found success in Bangladesh, the hope is to take it to other countries, with the creators already in talks with an Indian distributor. (Source: AFP via Gay Star News)

Gay Couple’s Tragic Viral Video To Be Made Into A Film

July 11, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A few months ago, a video about the tragic aftermath of the death of a young man went viral. It Could Happen To You charted Shane Bitney Crone’s experience after the death of his boyfriend, Tim. The dead man’s family had never accepted Tim’s sexuality and froze Shane out, showing the true cost of inequality. The Youtube video was viewed 2.7 million times and had a powerful effect on many who saw it.

Now plans are afoot to turn the story into a feature film documentary, with a Kickstarter campaign having reached its $300,000 goal to get the film, called Bridegroom, into cinemas. The ambitious idea is to have the film ready to premiere in October. Designing Women creator Linda Bloodworth-Thomason is set to direct.

She has a personal connection to the story, which she includes in a statement: ‘It all began when I attended a gay wedding ceremony in Palm Springs, California. That night, a couple of unforgettable, young men named Shane and Tom joined my table. I learned they were “Designing Women” fans, madly in love and literally brimming with all their big plans for an exciting life together. Sadly, that possibility ended when Tom was killed in an accident last year. When I heard the news, I was haunted by the sheer weight of Shane’s loss. Even though I barely knew them, their good-hearted demeanors and earnest love had made an indelible impression on me.

‘Then, a few weeks ago, I saw Shane’s YouTube posting, along with his bone crushing grief and the story of what happened to him after Tom’s death—and all because they were never allowed to marry. Like so many others who saw this video, I was deeply touched. And angered. I called Shane told him I wanted to make a documentary that would tell his and Tom’s love story from beginning to end. I have now seen all of Shane and Tom’s videos and home movies. Like a lot of young people, they routinely documented their lives—but this recorded history is so prolific, it almost seems as though they had a premonition or unconscious fear of not getting to live out something important.

‘Tom and Shane were each other’s first and only loves. They are devoted, hardworking, unassuming and funny. Each is from a small town and each, in his own way, is imbued with the best kind of small town values. They are, in fact, the sort of young people who hold within themselves the promise of America. And that is why I want to bring to life, on film, this real life Romeo and Romeo—so that all who condemn them, might come face to face with exactly what it is they are opposing.

‘Certainly the fact that Tom’s last name is Bridegroom is a lucky and serendipitous gift to a filmmaker. But it is so unusual, even a skeptic would find it hard not to also feel that Tom, in his own way, is now standing in for something larger than himself. I can think of no more powerful opportunity to change hearts and minds on this very important issue of human rights, than to tell the story of Shane and Tom, which at its core, is the struggle of all people who yearn to be who they are and love who they love.’

Even though the film has reached its goal, it’s still possible to help over at Kickstarter, and you can follow the film’s production on Facebook or at its Official Website.

Here’s the video that sparked the film.

James Franco Plans ‘Homo-Sex-Art-Film’

July 10, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Sometimes it seems like James Franco should just shag a guy and get over it. He’s virtually made his indie career out of exploring everything homosexual, playing the likes of gay poets Allen Ginsberg and Hart Crane (he also directed the film about the latter) and directing a movie about gay actor Sal Mineo.

We wouldn’t even be surprised if his Wizard in Oz The Great And Powerful turned out to be a friend of Dorothy both literally and figuratively.

He still hasn’t got the homo thang out of his system, as he’s now working on a new film with a bit of a gay bent. Director Travis Mathews revealed the news on his blog, writing “Last week I got an email from James Franco’s agent asking if I’d be interested in collaborating with him on a homo-sex-art-film. A day later we were on the phone and a week later we’re in pre-production! We’ll be shooting at the end of July, Ill be editing in August, and in September it’s going to play in a show in NYC. We’re staying pretty mumsy on the specifics for now, but I can tell you that it’s going to ruffle some feathers. Stay tuned!”

There’s no news therefore on exactly what the film will be. Perhaps James has finally  decided to pop his man-cherry and wants Mathews to film! We’ll have to wait and see.

Brad Pitt’s Brother Talks About Their Mother’s Anti-Gay Views

July 10, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Many were surprised last week when the mother of Brad Pitt came out as being against gay marriage in a letter to her local newspaper. The letter encouraged people to vote for Mitt Romney, which slamming Obama for coming out in support of same-sex couple being allowed to wed. It raised many eyebrows as Brad is known as one of the most staunch supporters of equal marriage in Hollywood.

Now Brad’s brother Doug has addressed his mom’s letter during an appearance on NBC’s The Today Show in the US, where he was promoting a new Virgin ad campaign that dubs him, ‘The second most famous Pitt in his family’. He stated, “Moms and dads and kids agree to disagree all over the world, so why would our family be any different?”

Doug added, “There can be healthy discussion when people disagree with you, and I think there should be. The bad thing is when it turns into venom and negativity and we don’t have that in our family. It’s open discussion, we can learn from each other. If anything, it solidifies your point or maybe you learn something.”

Despite his mum’s thought, Brad has been a staunch ally in the fight for LGBT equality. He contributed $100,000 to the campaign to defeat California’s Proposition 8 in 2008 and more recently joined cast of the Los Angeles production of 8, the play by Dustin Lance Black about the trial that resulted in the overturning of Proposition 8.

Danny La Rue Biopic Planned

July 10, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

In the world of British gay trailblazers, there was no one quite like Danny La Rue. While most other female impersonators shied away from making what they were doing explicitly gay, La Rue spent his life on the edge, becoming incredibly popular while putting his sexuality as close to the surface as society would allow.

Now Variety has revealed that the production company Leopardrama is planning a biopic about La Rue, with a script by Martyn Hesford (who also wrote Fantabulosa about Kenneth Williams).

Danny La Rue was born Daniel Patrick Carroll in Cork City, Ireland in 1927, and made a career out of his vaudeville female impersonator act, becoming increasingly famous during the 60s with impressions of the likes Zsa Zsa Gabor and Elizabeth Taylor. By the 70s he was one of the most popular entertainers in Britain, even though both he and his act were on the edge of being openly gay – something that was incredibly unusual at the time. Until that point camp hadn’t gone much further than asexual innuendo, but La Rue put sex back into camp. Behind the scenes he was caught in a web of relationships, including his manager, costume designer and his lover, Jack Hanson.

James Burstall, the CEO of the company behind the film, commented, “Danny’s life is such a fascinating story because he was a pioneer and he blurred boundaries of sex and taste.”

Nina Arianda Set For Janis Joplin Biopic

July 10, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Here we go again. For decades the movie world has been trying to make a biopic about bisexual musician Janis Joplin, but time and time again they’ve failed. Now Martha Marcy May Marlene director Sean Durkin is having a go, planning a sub $20-million indie pic about the last six years of Joplin’s life, with flashbacks to her earlier days.

Durkin has already found his star, Nina Arianda, who recently won Best Actress at the Tony Awards for her performance in the show Venus In Fur and has appeared in movies such as Win Win, Midnight in Paris, and Tower Heist.

What sets this attempt at a Joplin biopic apart from most others is that producer Peter Newman has spent 12 years putting it together, and gathering the rights to 21 of Joplin’s best known songs, something that has stymied most previously planned films about the singer. Arianda will sing Joplin’s tunes as well as starring as the young singer who found success but then descended into drink and drugs, dying of a heroin overdose at the age of 27.

The plan is to start shooting the film early next year. (Source: Deadline)

Second Season Of Gay Web Series Husbands Incoming

July 7, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The web series Husbands gained a lot of fans in its first season online, including it seems Buffy creator Joss Whedon, who’s thrown his support behind the upcoming second season, saying “Husbands is full of the kind of whip-smart remarks you wish you’d written yourself.” Season 2 starts on August 15th, after a successful crowdfunding campaign allowed it to happen.

Whedondoes have a bit of a connection to the marriage equality series, as the show is headed up by Buffy the Vampire Slayer writer Jane Espenson, as well as Brad Bell. The series is set in a fictional America where gay marriage is legal everywhere, and two celebrities – one an openly gay actor and the other a newly out baseball player – drunkenly get hitched in Las Vegas. Despite the fact it’s all happened a bit quick, their worry about scandal and disgracing the hard won right of gays getting married means they decide to keep their secret and try to make the relationship work.

The series is directed by Jeff Greenstein, who produced episodes of Friends and Will & Grace, and stars Brad Bell as Cheeks and Sean Hemeon as Brady. The very first episode is above, and if you’d like to check out more before season 2 starts on August 15th, head over to husbandstheseries.com.
