True Blood’s Anna Paquin Talks Bisexuality

May 4, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It seems almost ridiculous that in this day and age someone still need to defend being bisexual form those who refuse to believe it’s possible to be attracted to people of both genders, but Anna Paquin obviously feels there’s a reason to.

After having first talked about her bisexuality in a PSA in 2009, she’s recently told Zooey magazine, “I’m sure for some people saying they’re bisexual feels less scary than making a statement that they’re gay. ‘or me, it’s not really an issue because I’m someone who believes being bisexual is actually a thing.

“It’s not made up. It’s not a lack of decision. It’s not being greedy or numerous other ignorant things I’ve heard at this point. For a bisexual, it’s not about gender. That’s not the deciding factor for who they’re attracted to.”

I’ve often thought those who refuse to believe in bisexuality either have a lack of imagination simply because they can’t imagine themselves being attracted to both genders, or they’ve had bad experiences with someone who was bisexual and generalised from there. However as Anna says, it is ‘a thing’.

The True Blood star is currently expecting her first child with co-star and hubby Stephen Moyer.

Pariah Director Dee Rees Sets New Film, This Man This Woman

May 2, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While Pariah is yet to debut in the UK, its tale of a young, black woman dealing with her identity and sexuality has made huge waves in the US, winning gongs at the Independent Spirit Awards, Sundance and elsewhere.

It’s ensured there’s been a lot of interest in director Dee Rees, and now Variety reports that she’s attached to a new movie, This Man This Woman. Producer Mike Lobell has been developing the movie for 17 years and is now pushing forward with Rees set to helm.

Frederic Raphael (Eyes Wide Shut) wrote the script, which is about a divorced couple who’ve been struck by tragedy  and start to rekindle their relationship when they seated next to one another on a plane.

It’s not the only project Rees is working on, as she’s teamed up with Viola Davis to develop a TV series for HBO, as well as putting together a southern-set thriller called Bolo and a script titled Large Print, about a recently divorced insurance salesman. It’s not clear whether any of these deal explicitly with homosexuality, which was a theme that ran through many of her shorts. Lobell and Rees will now seek high profile talent before trying to get funding for This Man This Woman.

UK Poster For She Monkeys Debuts

April 26, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Peccadillo Pictures has revealed the UK poster for Lisa Aschan’s award-winning debut, She Monkeys, which will be released in cinemas in the UK on 18th May.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘A taboo-busting modern Western, Lisa Aschan’s debut feature She Monkeys presents a trio of young women for whom gender is both weapon and toy, pushing the boundaries of political correctness to breaking point. Winner of Best Narrative Feature at last year’s Tribeca Film Festival and receiving a Special Mention at the Berlin Film Festival 2011, She Monkeys recently won 3 Guldblagge Awards, equivalent of the Swedish Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Screenplay and Best Sound.

‘Emma (Mathilda Paradeiser) is a girl who likes to be in control. When she tries out for the local voltige (equestrian vaulting) team she meets Cassandra (Linda Molin), a strong, attractive and vivacious girl. As they get to know each other they share a sense of wicked fun and quickly become best friends. But feelings of jealousy, competiveness and sexual attraction have them pushing each other to their limits. As Emma spends more time away from home with Cassandra, little sister Sara (Isabella Lindquist) begins to discover her own sexual identity, all the while pining for affection from a reluctant babysitter.

‘Director Lisa Aschan graduated from The National Film School of Denmark in 2005. Known for her suggestive visual language, naturalistic direction, and unique talent for telling a story in actions instead of words, she sees filmmaking as a way to explore the world, not simply give it form. Her short films In Transit and Goodbye Bluebird have been shown in film festivals around the world. Aschan directed the BAFTA award winning and Emmy nominated Danish crime TV series ‘The Killing’, from which a US remake has been made. She Monkeys is her first feature film.’

Gay Documentary Rocco Dared Seeks Funding

April 24, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Documenting gay history is always a worthwhile project, and that’s what Rocco Dared is attempting to do, taking a feature-length look at Pat Rocco, one of Hollywood’s original boundary pushing gay pioneers. Now the film is looking for funding on IndieGoGo, so that you can help out with what looks like it could be a fascinating (and rather sexy) project.

According to the spiel, ‘Rocco sold his all nude male films in the backs of local papers before getting his own festival at Los Angeles’ Park Theatre in 1968. The festival was an instant hit and Rocco continued to pump out more films as fast as he could, pushing new boundaries with each one.  In A Very Special Friend Rocco dared to screen the first kiss between two men ever seen on a big theatre screen. Artistic, erotic, and highly romanticized, his films were controversial not for their explicitness but rather their bold political and artistic expression.

‘With a few short re-creations of Rocco’s early days of filmmaking, and Charlie David – fellow filmmaker, activist and star of Dante’s Cove and Judas Kill – playing a young Pat Rocco, the film will blend 21st century HD magic realism, with psychedelic 16mm sixties art films, creating a groovy, modern, hipster feel. We will blend the traditional documentary with contemporary cinema verité techniques, and stretch conventional concepts of imagination and authenticity.

‘David offers an excellent perspective for reflection and analysis, bringing his own unique personal touch to the investigative process, as he literally becomes Pat Rocco in the final scenes of the film. Audiences of all ages will be amazed and inspired by the things Rocco dared to do.’

The film is looking for $20,000 before June 2nd, with contributions accepted from $25 up and different perks offered depending on how much you give. So if you want to help, head over to IndieGoGo and sign up!

Oh, and if you want to know why including Charlie David in anything is a good idea, click here.

Note: While Rocco Dared in being produced by a company called Big Gay Movie, it has no affiliation with Big Gay Picture Show.

Cast Announced For Gay Comedy The Men Next Door

April 24, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Guest House Films today announced the casting of the three lead actors for its upcoming feature film, The Men Next Door – Eric Dean (Nine Lives,George’s Intervention), Michael Nicklin (The George & Alana Show) and Benjamin Lutz (Bite Marks, The Love Patient).

In the fast-paced feature comedy, Dean will star as Doug, a 40-year-old gay man who finds himself dating two very different men – 50-year-old Jacob (played by Nicklin) and 30-year-old Colton (played by Lutz). What Doug doesn’t learn right away is that the two equally lovable men are, in fact, father and son.

“I cannot wait to get on set with these three actors – individually, they are each extremely talented and charismatic, but when we put them together during the audition process, we immediately saw something special that should translate into amazing on-screen chemistry,” said Rob Williams, writer and director of The Men Next Door.

Principal photography on The Men Next Door, which will be produced by Rodney Johnson and Williams, is expected to begin in May, and will be distributed by Guest House Films after a film festival run.

Anyone interested in supporting The Men Next Door is encouraged to visit the film’s IndieGoGo campaign page at www.indiegogo.com/themennextdoor. First Clip Emerges From Yossi & Jagger Follow-up

April 23, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

In 2002, Etoyan Fox made waves in gay movie circles with Yossi & Jagger, about the romance between two soldiers who are stationed at an Israeli outpost on the Lebanese border. It’s a bit of a modern gay classic, and now 10 years on Fox has made a follow-up, Yossi.

As the title suggests, the film picks up the story of one of the lead characters from the earlier movie, Yossi (Ohad Knoller), who’s now a Tel Aviv doctor and still firmly in the closet. He has little social life, but an unexpected encounter sends Yossi on a road trip across southern Israel, where a chance meeting with a group of young soldiers reawakens something inside him. The film is currently playing at New York’s Tribeca Film Festival, and to coincide with that the first clip has emerged, which you can see above.

Josh Hutcherson & Beginners Pick Up GLAAD Awards

April 23, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The gays got a bit glitzy this weekend in Los Angeles, with GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) handing out some of their media awards. Beginners continued its run of awards success, picking up ‘Outstanding Film – Wide Release’.

Also from the world of film was Josh Hutcherson, who became the youngest person ever to receive the Vanguard Award, given to someone in the public eye who’s worked hard towards LGBT rights. Hutcherson may be only 19, but he co-founded the organisation Straight But Not Narrow, which works to promote gay-straight alliances in schools and elsewhere.

You can see his speech at the event below, along with Cher introducing her son, Chaz, who received the Stephen F. Kolzak Award, given to an openly LGBT media professional who has made a significant difference in promoting equality.

Other guests at the event included Ellen DeGeneres, Betty White, Jesse Tyler Ferguson,  Benicio Del Toro, Joshua Jackson, Perez Hilton, Guillermo Diaz and Milla Jovovich.

Here’s the full list of winners:

Chris Evans Says He’s ‘Embarrassed’ By Marriage Inequality

April 23, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Avengers star Chris Evans has long been an ally of the gays, partly because his brother prefers boys to girls (Chris accidentally outed his bro to The Advocate in 2009). While promoting his latest superhero mash-up, the insanely hot actor has been talking to Playboy and touched on the subject of marriage equality.

He says, “It’s insane that civil rights are being denied people in this day and age. It’s embarrassing, and it’s heartbreaking. It goes without saying that I’m completely in support of gay marriage. In 10 years we’ll be ashamed that this was an issue.”

Go for it Chris, and hopefully he’ll turn out to be right!

1st Poster & Clip From Lesbian Werewolf Drama Jack & Diane

April 21, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

We reported last month that Jack & Diane was set to premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival. That’s now happened and now timed to coincide with that, the first clip and poster for the movie have arrived.

Riley Keough and Juno Temple star in the film, which has been widely described as a werewolf film, although many have said that’s slightly misleading. The movie is about two teenage girls who meet in New York City and despite being very different, spark up a relationship. When Jack discovers that Diane is leaving the country in a week she tries to push her away. Diane struggles to keep their love alive while hiding the secret that her newly awakened sexual desire is giving her werewolf-like visions. Jena Malone also stars, with Kyle Minogue popping up in the movie as a tattooed lesbian. Hopefully the movie will reach the UK later this year.

Disney Studios’ Gay Chief Rich Ross Resigns

April 21, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

After much criticism of his tenure and the risky strategy he seemed to be following, the openly gay head of Disney Studios, Rich Ross, has resigned from the post. From the moment of his October 2009 hiring – when he replace long-serving head Bob Cook who’d essentially been forced out – all eyes have been on Ross to deliver.

Disney CEO Bob Iger has hoped Ross could bring the success he’d at the company’s TV channels to the movie division, although many felt this was a huge risk as he had virtually no film experience. There was further criticism shortly after he came in, when Ross nixed several seeingly promising high profile projects while commissioning seemingly more risky films. He also raised eyebrows by getting rid of several seasoned executives as well as overseeing what many viewed as a disastrous reorganisation of the marketing division.

Even Ross’ personality came in for criticism, with THR noting that his ‘manner struck some in the industry as detached and even patronizing’, especially considering his lack of movie experience. However if the films he put into production had proved successful, his critics would have been silenced.

Unfortunately the first movie that he’d fully overseen, Prom, grossed less than $10 million worldwide. What really caused problems though was John Carter, which didn’t just lose the studio around $200 million but also caused problems between Ross and animation chief John Lasseter over how Disney Studios was stealing from Pixar’s brain trust for the film and then not allowing them to work in a way that would allow them to succeed.

Now Ross has resigned, saying that ‘I no longer believe the Chairman role is the right professional fit for me. For that reason, I have made the very difficult decision to step down as Chairman of The Walt Disney Studios, effective today.’

There’s already much speculation over whether pressure had been put on him to go, especially due to worries over the studio’s future film slate. While most studios have a varied roster of film at different budget levels and in different genres, Ross has largely pursued massive gamble event movies, such as Sam Raimi’s Oz: The Great And Powerful and The Lone Ranger. It’s a strategy that’s had a lot of people worried, as while it can be massively profitable if it works, as John Carter proved, it can be financially disastrous if it goes wrong, especially if there’s nothing less risky to back it up.
