Virginia Trailer – Dustin Lance Black’s directorial debut

April 19, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Virginia (or What’s With Virginia? as it was initially titled) debuted with mixed-to-bad reviews at the Toronto Film Festival a few months ago, but Dustin Lance Black’s directorial debut still seems like it’ll be worth a look. It’s out on the US in May and should reach the UK later this year.

Black is, of course, best known as the out and proud screenwriter of Milk and J. Edgar, but here thing are less historical and more satirical. In the film, a sheriff (Ed Harris) sees his state senate bid slide onto the ice when his daughter begins to date the son of a charming but psychologically disturbed woman (Jennifer Connelly) with whom the sheriff has engaged in a two-decades-long affair.

Some have commented that the trailer seems deceptive, as the film they saw plays out more tragic than the comic tone of the promo, However it has been completely re-edited since its TIFF debut, due to some of the severe criticism it came in for. Hopefully Dustin will have sorted things out, as the trailer does make the movie look decent enough.

Turin GLBT Film Festival Ad Has Fun With Taboos

April 19, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Some people love the gays, some people hate them, but are there some things we can all come together in being prejudiced against? That’s the questions the fun video above asks, which was made to advertise the 27th Turin GLBT Film Festival.

Set to Chopin’s second nocturne, it’s a simple but effective idea, even if you may ultimately disagree that about what it thinks we should shield a child’s eyes from. Click above for a bit of a giggle, and if you do happen to be in Turin between now and April 25th, go see some films at the festival!

Gay Twins Make A Film About Their Love Of Dolly Parton

April 19, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While the adoration of some gay icons, such as Barbra Streisand, is a bit of a mystery to me, I’m right there when it comes to worshipping the ground that Dolly Parton walks on. Now gay twins Gary and Larry Lane have decided to document their love of the singer with the documentary Hollywood To Dollywood.

The twins, both of whom are gay, left North Carolina over a decade ago to try their hand in Hollywood and have modeled, made commercials, gotten bit parts in movies and TV shows and been on the reality shows Fear Factor and Winter Wipeout, as well as writing scripts. They felt one of their screenplays was perfect for Dolly, but they weren’t sure how to get it to her.

They eventually decided to make a pilgrimage to her theme park, Dollywood, and document the experience of trying to get her the script during the park’s 25th Anniversary celebrations. So Larry, Gary and the latter’s boyfriend Mike, packed up and went on a cross-country road trip in an RV, with John Levin directing the documentary about them, which also looks at the difficulties the twins have faced with their family over their sexuality. They also got to chat with a few LGBT heroes such as Dustin Lance Black, actress Beth Grant and actors Chad Allen and Leslie Jordan along the way.

Dolly must have been impressed with the results as she’s now struck a deal with the twins to license 15 of her songs, including a couple of new ones, for use in the documentary, with the promise that 10% of each Blu-ray and DVD sale of the documentary would go to her Imagination Library, which works to improve literacy.

Hollywood To Dollywood is now available for pre-order in the US, and you can find out more on the movie’s website, where there’s also info on upcoming festival screening. (Source: Gay Star News)

Your Sister’s Sister Trailer

April 19, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A year after his brother Tom’s death, Jack (Mark Duplass) is an emotionally unstable slacker. When he makes a scene at a memorial party, Tom’s ex-girlfriend Iris (Emily Blunt) offers up her family cabin on an island in the Pacific Northwest so Jack can seek catharsis in solitude. Once there, however, he runs into Iris’ sister Hannah (Rosemarie DeWitt), a lesbian reeling from the abrupt end of a seven-year relationship who finds solace in the affable Tom’s unexpected presence, and the two bond over a long night of drinking. The blurry evening concludes with an awkward sexual incident made worse by Iris’ sudden presence at the cabin the next morning, which sets into motion a twisted tale of ever-complicated relationships. The film hits the UK on June 29th.

T.R. Knight Joins Jackie Robinson Biopic 42

April 17, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Although it always seemed that T.R. Knight left Grey’s Anatomy more due to behind-the-scenes personality differences than anything else, he must have hoped his career would have remained a little more high profile than it has. His only post-Grey’s on-screen credit is a single episode of Law &Order: SVU (although he has done a lot of work on stage).

Indeed, the fact he hasn’t made more of an impact has led many to question whether his decision to come out has affected his ability to get roles in TV and film, or if he’s merely following the career trajectory of many TV actors, who find it difficult to find work outside the one thing they’re best known for.

However he’s now scored a big screen role opposite Harrison Ford in 42, a biopic of Jackie Robinson, who became Baseball’s first African-American major league player when Branch Rickey (Ford) signed him for the Dodgers in 1947.

According to THR, ‘Knight will play Harold Parrott, the Dodgers traveling secretary who has to deal with the repercussions of housing once Robinson joins the team.’ And of course housing at the time was more of a problem than it should have been, due to the endemic racism in America. Relative newcomer Chadwick Boseman will play Robinson. Brian Hegeland will direct.

Josh Hutcherson Becomes GLAAD’s Youngest Vanguard Honoree

April 16, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

As GLAAD’s Vanguard Award is presented each year to media professionals who, through their work, have increased the visibility and understanding of the LGBT community, it normally goes to someone whose been supporting gay rights for years. However this year’s gong has gone to the youngest honoree ever, 19-year-old Hunger Games star Josh Hutcherson.

While some will argues that the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation is just jumping on the Hunger Games bandwagon, there’s little doubt that Hutcherson has done work to help gay youth that would put most actors to shame.

Along with close friend, actor Avan Jogia, he’s a cofounder of the Straight But Not Narrow  campaign, which supports gay youth and their straight allies, and he recently starred in a PSA promoting the importance of gay-straight alliances in US schools. He’s previously told SamaritanMag.com, “We just launched [SBNN], and it’s a very exciting time for us and it hits close to home for me. I have a lot of gay friends in Los Angeles. My roommate’s gay and I lost two uncles when I was young to AIDS, so it’s an important cause in my family.” Of course he also starred as one of the children of lesbian mothers in The Kids Are All Alright.

“As the youngest person to ever receive the Vanguard Award, Josh Hutcherson represents a new generation of equality advocates who know that no one should be denied vital legal protections or face discrimination because of who they are,” GLAAD’s Mike Thompson said in a statement. “Through his work in trailblazing films like The Kids Are All Right, as well as his leadership in projects like the Straight But Not Narrow campaign, Josh is helping countless Americans understand the importance of equality.”

The ceremony for the 23rd annual GLAAD Media Awards will be held in Los Angeles April 21.

Paul Iacono, Star Of MTV’s RJ Berger, Comes Out As Gay

April 11, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While Britain is still way ahead of the US in terms of actors feeling free to be open about their sexuality (although as a recent Equity campaign highlighted, there’s still work to be done), America is catching up.

The latest to come out is 23-year-old Paul Iacono, who some will know as the star of the MTV series, The Hard Times Of R.J. Berger, where he played a high school student whose life starts to increasingly revolve around his abnormally large penis! The show ran for two seasons, but was canceled last year. He also appeared in the remake of Fame.

Iacono is giving a coming out interview to The Village Voice’s Paul Musto, which will be online soon.

Only a few years ago, the only actors in the US who came out seemed to be people whose career had waned and now had an autobiography to hawk. Now more and more young actors, from Neil Patrick Harris to Iacono are being open without seeming to worry too much about it being the end of their career.

Corpus Christi: Playing with Redemption Trailer

April 7, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

There’s no doubt that Corpus Christi is a controversial play. Written by Terrence McNally and first performed in 1998, the play depicts Jesus and his disciples as gay men, Christ performing a same-sex marriage, and Judas betraying him due to romantic jealousy. It’s original Broadway production was met with protests and it’s been pretty much the same wherever it’s been staged in the US, becoming a major target in the ever intensifying culture wars of homosexuality.

Corpus Christi: Playing with Redemption is a documentary that looks at the staging of a small LA production, which led to a US tour and eventually a staging in Corpus Christi, Texas, which doesn’t just share a name with the play, but is also McNally’s hometown. The film also looks at the protests and reactions against it, comparing the play’s message of universal love to the blind bigotry it’s been met with.

Unfortunately there’s no clue yet if the doc will ever make it to the UK, but it’s premiering on April 29th in San Francisco, and will then accompany a new production of the play on a US tour. (Thanks to Queerty for the heads up)
