Tab Hunter: Confidential Trailer – Looking at the life of the gay 1950s silver screen idol

March 14, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

tab-hunterMany younger people would be hard-pressed to name a film Tab Hunter starred in, but in the 1950s he was one of the first and biggest teen idols, swooned over by women (and some men) around the world. Some have suggested he was to the 1950s what Zac Efron was to the late 2000s – incredibly handsome but still with a bit of a boy-next-door air about him.

Indeed, if you mention his name to many female post-War baby boomers, you can still see the remnants of the dreamboat crush they once had on him.

However what nobody except those close to him knew at the time was that he was gay, something that didn’t become official public knowledge until many years later. Indeed it was only in 2006 with the publication of his autobiography, Tab Hunter Confidential: The Making of a Movie Star, that he confirmed the rumours that had circulated for many years about his sexuality.

Now that book has been turned into a documentary, featuring extensive interviews with the now 83-year-old Hunter, about his life and dealing with being gay and in the public eye at a time when homosexual acts were still illegal.

You can take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

New Documentary Suggests John Travolta Was Blackmailed By Scientology Over His Sexuality

March 14, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

john-travoltaThere’s already a lot of interest in Alex Gibney’s HBO documentary, Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief, with many wondering if the Church Of Scientology will try to suppress it (indeed some wondered if they’d attempt to do so before its Sundance premiere), as it doesn’t exactly paint a rosy picture of the ‘religion’.

One of its claims, according to Buzzfeed, is that once the Church had converted John Travolta, it used its resources to try and ensure he stayed in the closet (it has long been suggested Scientology is pretty homophobic), and would go out and try to silence those who suggested he might be gay. It’s something they were only partially successful with, as over the years numerous people have come forward saying John prefers men, whether it’s former colleagues, alleged male lovers or those who, a couple of years ago, tried to sue him for sexual assault.

Travolta himself has rarely directly addressed the rumours, but the documentary suggests that may be because Scientology was doing the job for him behind the scenes.

Ex-Scientologist Marty Rathbun, who is now one of the organisations most vociferous critics, says “On many occasions, we were sent out to get with his [Travolta’s] publicist, to get with his lawyer to help squash or intimidate these people who were making accusations against him.

It’s also suggested that the Church keeps ‘a black PR package’ on Travolta, which includes private confessions that he is gay, gained during the ‘auditing’ process that is central to Scientology.

As Lawrence Wright, co-producer and author of Going Clear, the 2013 book on which the film is based, puts it, “Once that happened, I think he was really the church’s captive.”

However Wright is certainly not keen to see Travolta as a victim, adding, “When they were facing lawsuits and stuff like that, he’d be brought forward and make his testimony about how great Scientology is. He had the opportunity to affect the behavior of the church. And he chose not to.”

Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief premieres on HBO in the US on March 29th.

Richard Glatzer, Gay Director Of Still Alice & The Fluffer, Dies

March 14, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

julianne-moore-richard-glatzer-wash-westmorelandRichard Glatzer just had his greatest critical and commercial success, with Julianne Moore picking up a Best Actress Oscar for Still Alice, where she plays a woman dealing with early onset Alzheimer’s. The movie was co-written and directed by Glatzer and his husband, Wash Westmoreland. Now though, just a few weeks later, Richard has died from complication due to ALS.

While Westmoreland perhaps got more credit over the years, Glatzer co-directed all of their movies, which include the cult classic LGBT flickThe Fluffer, Quinceañera and The Last of Robin Hood.

In a statement released shortly after the news of Glatzer’s death was revealed, Westmoreland says, “I am devastated. Rich was my soul mate, my collaborator, my best friend and my life… Richard was a unique guy— opinionated, funny, caring, gregarious, generous, and so, so smart. A true artist and a brilliant man. I treasure every day of the short twenty years we had together. I cannot believe he has gone. But in my heart and the hearts of those who loved him he will always be alive.”

Glatzer started out in academia, before turning his attention to films and TV. He met Westmoreland in 1995 and they collaborated on numerous projects from that point on.

The director was diagnosed with ALS some time ago, and said during an interview with AP about Still Alice, “It’s ironic that in my deteriorated state I’d be able to make a film that was creatively everything I’d ever wished for.”

Both he and Westmoreland suggested that many of the scenes and feelings they tried to engender in the movie mirrored what they had gone through when Glatzer was dealing with the early stages of his disease.

His condition made directing Still Alice more complicated, but they decided early on that despite his difficulties, his thoughts and opinions deserved to be heard, even if it slowed things down somewhat.

While he was able to watch Moore win the Oscar, Glatzer did so from hospital, where he’d been taken two days before due to having difficulties breathing. Westmoreland watched by his side.

Elizabeth Banks To Play Billie Jean King In HBO’s Battle Of The Sexes Biopic

March 10, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

elizabeth-banksFollowing the success of the 2013 documentary Battle Of The Sexes there was a lot of interest in turning that story into a feature film. At one point Danny Boyle was planning to turn the tale of Billie Jean King’s infamous match against misogynist Bobby Riggs into a movie, and shortly after that Will Ferrell signed up to play Riggs in a rival flick.

Neither of those films came to pass, but now HBO has stepped up to the plate to get a film about the match made, and they’ve got a great cast to help, as Variety reports that Elizabeth Banks will play King, with Paul Giamatti as Riggs.

The film will be set in the early 70s, when former male World Number 1 tennis played and self-proclaimed chauvinist Bobby Riggs’ declared that the female game was inferior and that a top woman player couldn’t beat him even at the age of 55. He then challenged the already legendary female player Billie Jean King to a match, but she declined.

However Margaret Court, who was then the top female player in the world, took on the challenge, but lost to Bobby in straight sets, seemingly confirming Riggs’ claims. King wasn’t going to stand for that and agreed to play Bobby in what became a nationally televised media sensation.

It was an important time in King’s life for another reason too, as for the first time she’d relatively recently become involved in a relationship with a woman, even though she was still married to a man at the time.

It’s not known if the HBO movie will cover that aspect of King’s life or if it will just stick to the tennis. David Auburn (Proof) is set to write, although it doesn’t appear a director is attached as yet.

Eastenders’ Sam Strike Joins Texas Chainsaw Prequel, Leatherface

March 10, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Sam-StrikeA couple of days ago there was buzz that Eastenders actor Sam Strike was going to be the new Spider-man. Many were sceptical, not least because Strike and his management were buzzing about ‘major news’ and a ‘big Hollywood’ film. Studios normally insist on total silence about huge casting news, so it seemed unlikely Sam was talking about Spidey (indeed he could have lost the role for having a big mouth).

Now we know what it is, and it’s far less exciting but still a big move for the young British actor. TheWrap reports that he’ll play the title role in Leatherface, a prequel to Texas Chainsaw Massacre with Strike taking us through the story of how a young man became the creepy machinery wielding maniac of Tobe Hooper’s movie (although it will presumably follow a different story to 2006’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning).

It’s not quite swinging through New York in a superhero suit, is it?

Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo will direct.

Strike caused minor controversy when he announced he was leaving Eastenders after playing character Johnny Carter for less than a year. While it was denied, some suggested he was leaving because his character was gay and he was worried about being typecast. However it now seems just as like that it was because Hollywood’s finger was beckoning, as it was was co-star Ben Hardy, who recently joined X-Men: Apocalypse.

Teaser Short Film Trailer – Looking at drug addiction in the LGBT community

March 9, 2015 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

teaser-adam-jonesThere is all sorts of work going on in the world of LGBT-themed cinema, from films that desperately want to be commercial to those that are always going to struggle to find a wide audience due their avant garde nature.

Adam Jones’ Teaser definitely skews towards that end of the spectrum. As he told us, ‘I’m a student filmmaker [making] a video project on gay men & the drug scene, a great story of recovery.

‘The short film starts shooting next month. The story is based on my story and recovery with drug use, we are shooting in a super 8 style to bring the daily issue to a whole new level cinematically. The teaser has shots of old cell phone footage of drug use, but a strong 2 min visual of imagery and symbolism. The story begins at Azure Acres Treatment where a young man’s recovery takes place.

‘I’m looking forward to present the short film in April at a live screening.’

He adds, ‘As the film begins at Azure Acres treatment center (Napa,CA), we go back in time to a year before entering treatment. Not only capturing every detail of how meth was introduced into the young man’s life, we are showing the actual steps he took to the road of destruction through dream sequences & cinematic clips pieced together into a story.’

The teaser for the film below certainly suggest this isn’t going to be an easy movie, but it could be a very intriguing one with its use of montage, contrasting images of gay life with drug imagery. Take a look. [Read more…]

Check It, A Doc About The Only Known All Gay & Queer Gang, Seeks Funding

March 8, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

check-itThe perception is that gangs are dangerous, quite scary and also homophobic, and while that may be largely true, there is one that’s a little different, as it’s the only known gang made up solely of gay & queer members. Now a documentary about it is being made called Check It, which is seeking $60,000 via IndieGoGo to get it completed.

Vice reports that ‘The group formed to provide members safety in numbers and let people know that if you jumped a gay kid in DC, you’d likely get jumped back in retaliation… Unlike other gangs, the Check It aren’t tied to a specific geographic location. They hang out at each others’ houses, mostly, as well as a local Denny’s and the Chinatown and Gallery Place Metro stations. And they didn’t have to do much to spread their name. A local go-go band called ReAction wrote a song about the gang and name-checked individual members. That meant people like [Trayvon] Warren (pictured) had a certain amount of notoriety, which allowed him to go to pretty much any neighborhood in DC without people giving him much trouble for being, as he and his friends put it, “faggie.”‘

The documentary provides ‘an intimate portrait of 5 childhood friends as they claw themselves out of gang life through an unlikely avenue–fashion.’

At the IndieGoGo page says, life can be extremely tough for African-American queer teens, with many rejected by their family and community, and then face a struggle to survive, with the gang providing a refuge, despite the still present dangers.

You can take a look at the trailer below, which is introduced by Steve Buscemi, and then head over to the IndieGoGo page for more info. [Read more…]

March 5, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

not-looking-season2-teaserLast year, not long after Looking debuted on TV, Not Looking popped up on the web as an antidote to what many thought were the shortcomings of the show, showing us a more realistic world where not everyone was pretty and buff. Now the web series is hoping to come back with Season 2 and it’s looking for funding on IndieGoGo to do that. It’s already reached its initial $10,000 target, but is hoping to raise more for a bigger and better season.

Mr. Holmes Teaser – Ian McKellen takes on a old-age Sherlock

March 4, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

mr-holmes-poster1-slideBenedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller have some Sherlock Holmes competition this year, as Ian McKellen is taking on the legendary detective, as a rather older version of the character than his youger competition.

Now the first teaser trailer for the movie has arrived, which is brief but gives us a decent feel for the film. And if you want to see more, you can take a look at the clip McKellen debuted a few weeks ago.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Academy Award nominee Ian McKellen takes on the iconic role of Detective Sherlock Holmes, one of the British literature’s most revered characters in the forthcoming film MR HOLMES.

‘In 1947, the world famous sleuth has retired to a remote Sussex farmhouse, living in relative anonymity with only his housekeeper Mrs Munro and her young son Roger for company. Cantankerous, demanding and frustrated with the mis-representation of him in Watson’s best-selling novels, he diverts his attention to an unsolved case. As the mystery deepens, Sherlock tries desperately to recall the events of 30 years ago that ultimately led to his retirement.

‘Starring Academy Award nominee Laura Linney (The Savages), Frances de la Tour (Harry Potter)and newcomer Milo Parker, MR HOLMES is adapted from Mitch Cullin’s 2005 novel A Slight Trick of the Mind and is directed by Academy Award winning filmmaker Bill Condon (Gods and Monsters).

MR HOLMES will be released in cinemas across the UK & Ireland on June 19th. [Read more…]

Russell Tovey Apologises For Being ‘Worst Gay Ever’ Over Effeminacy Comments

March 3, 2015 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

russell-toveyYesterday we reported on the controversy that had arisen over comments made by Russell Tovey in an interview, where he said, “I feel like I could have been really effeminate, if I hadn’t gone to the school I went to. Where I felt like I had to toughen up. If I’d have been able to relax, prance around, sing in the street, I might be a different person now. I thank my dad for that, for not allowing me to go down that path.”

Many took umbrage at the idea of ‘thanking’ someone for ‘not allowing’ him to go down the path of being effeminate, with some accusing him of internalised homophobia and denigrating those gay men who aren’t ‘straight looking’.

Now though Tovey has taken to Twitter to apologise, suggesting he wasn’t trying to say what it sounded like he meant, and was instead an inarticulate way of of saying he’s grateful for the career he’s had.

He says:

#whiteflag #whiteflag

— russell tovey (@russelltovey) March 3, 2015

I surrender. You got me. I'm sat baffled and saddened that a mis- fired inarticulate quote of mine, has branded me worst gay ever
Contd

— russell tovey (@russelltovey) March 3, 2015

If you feel I have personally let you down, I'm sorry, that was never my intention

— russell tovey (@russelltovey) March 3, 2015

I'm proud to be who I am and proud for others We're in this together, I want you to know whatever you think I meant, I didn't

— russell tovey (@russelltovey) March 3, 2015

I'm gonna ride this out, and one day we will all look back on this moment with a half smile of fascination and amusement

— russell tovey (@russelltovey) March 3, 2015

Until that day I'm gonna carry on being me #lowersflag x

— russell tovey (@russelltovey) March 3, 2015

Although some have already said they feel the apology is half-hearted, it’s unlikely anyone if thinking he’s ‘worst gay ever’, although perhaps he needs to think through what he’s saying a bit more in the future.
