Jackie Chan & Owen Wilson Reteaming For Shanghai Dawn

September 7, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

shanghai-knights-slideIt’s time for another sequel that no one asked for, but with Hollywood looking for any and every way to entice Chinese audience, it’s been revealed that Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson getting back together for a follow-up to Shanghai Noon and Shanghai Knights, according to THR.

13 years on from the last movie, they’re in talks return as a former Chinese Imperial Guard (Chan) and a Wild West cowboy in the 19th Century. There’s no news on the exact plot of this one, but hopefully they’ve come up with something good, as the film was first put into development back in 2003, shortly after the release of Shanghai Knights.

Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite) is set to direct, from a script by Theodore Riley and Aaron Buchsbaum, based on a story by with Miles Millar and Alfred Gough (writers of the earlier Shanghai movies). It’s not clear when it might shoot.

What’s The Matter With Gerald Trailer – Jacob York & Matt Riddlehoover reteam for a new gay-themed film

September 6, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

whats-the-matter-with-gerald-slideJacob York was definitely one of the most memorable things about last year’s Paternity Leave, playing a gay man whose life gets flipped upside down when he discovers he’s one of a bunch of men who’ve inexplicably become pregnant. Now York has reteamed with his Paternity Leave director, Matt Riddlehoover, for What’s The Matter With Gerald.

Here’s the brief synopsis: ‘The film centers around a man (York) with a multitude of problems who seeks help from an eccentric healer (Kathy Cash) – much to the chagrin of his practical partner (Jonathan Everett).’

The movie is currently playing at film festivals. It should arrive on DVD & VoD in the US later this year. You can find out more at the movie’s website. [Read more…]

The Gay-Themed Short Film Pillow Talk Needs Your Help

September 5, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

pillow-talkBorrowing a title from a classic Doris Day and Rock Hudson movie, Pillow Talk is a 1990s-set coming-of tale, that’s hoping to shoot very soon. However, to get it in the can it needs your help, and so the gay-themed short film has launched an Indiegogo campaign in the hope of raising £1500.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Set in the early 90’s, Pillow Talk is a live action short film about the friendship between childhood best friends Cara and Lucy, growing up and growing apart.

‘It takes place during a sleepover at Cara’s (Ashleigh Cordery) house. Over the course of the night Lucy (Miranda Horn) instigates an increasingly not so subtle trap to get the truth out of Cara. She suspects that Cara has feelings for girls rather than boys and she is determined to get the truth out of her, even at the risk of damaging their friendship. As the night draws on cracks start to appear in their friendship that was once so tight. And the night has surprising consequences for both of them.’

Louise Marie Cooke will write and direct. You can take a look at the fundraising video below, and if you like what you see, head over to Indiegogo to help out. [Read more…]

Certain Women Trailer – Michelle Williams, Kristen Stewart & Laura Dern explore gender & sexuality

September 5, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

certain-womenThis is one of those quiet trailers that may not tell you a lot of plot, but still suggests the movie itself might be truly excellent. If nothing else, it has an incredible cast, including Michelle Williams, Kristen Stewart, Laura Dern, newcomer Lily Gladstone, Rene Auberjonois, Jared Harris and James Le Gros. And with Kelly Reichardt directing, it got a huge amount of promise.

Plus there’s an added bit of gay interest with its suggestion of a growing flirtation and bond between Stewart and Gladstone’s characters.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘One of America’s foremost filmmakers, Kelly Reichardt (Wendy and Lucy, Meek’s Cutoff) directs a remarkable ensemble cast led by Michelle Williams, Kristen Stewart, and Laura Dern in this stirring look at three women striving to forge their own paths amidst the wide-open plains of the American Northwest: a lawyer (Dern) who finds herself contending with both office sexism and a hostage situation; a wife and mother (Williams) whose determination to build her dream home puts her at odds with the men in her life; and a young law student (Stewart) who forms an ambiguous bond with a lonely ranch hand (radiant newcomer Lily Gladstone). As their stories intersect in subtle but powerful ways, a portrait emerges of flawed, but strong-willed individuals in the process of defining themselves.’

The film will be in US cinemas in October. [Read more…]

Ian McKellen Says He Thinks ‘Gay Men Are More Masculine Than Straight Men’

September 4, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ian-mckellenThere’s a lot of talk about the intersection of masculinity/femininity and sexuality, with many still feeling male homosexuality as being feminine, and even some gay people feeling that bottoms are less masculine, or that they must put comments about the need for masculinity on their gay dating profile. Now Ian McKellen has stepped into the debate, suggesting he thinks that gay men are more masculine than their straight counterparts.

After all – it involves two men, so is that more masculine that having a man and a woman?

In an interview with The Evening Standard featuring McKellen and his BFF Patrick Stewart, Ian says, “I’ve probably played even more military men than Patrick. Gandalf is a soldier, Magneto is a soldier, Richard III, Coriolanus, Macbeth. And I think the reason is because I want my revenge on them all…The people who start wars, perpetuate them and glory in them. ‘God save our gracious Queen, send her victorious?’ I’m sorry. What does that mean?… If that’s what masculinity is then I don’t want any part of it at all.”

McKellen then adds, “I think gay men are more masculine than straight men. Because, guess what? They love other men!…So when bully boys say: ‘Faggot!’ you say, ‘That’s right, I’m with the boys.’”

It’s not a comment that academics will be using in years to come as a profound statement on gender theory, but he’s sort of got a point, even if it ignores a lot of the issues.

Appropriate Behaviour’s Desiree Akhavan Coming To The UK For TV Series The Bisexual

September 1, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Appropriate-Behaviour-review-slideDesiree Akhavan got a lot of praise for her film Appropriate Behaviour, which she wrote, directed and starred in. Now though she’s heading to the UK, as Channel 4 has signed her up for the comedy web series, The Bisexual.

Appropriate Behaviour followed Akhavan as Shirin, a second-generation Iranian-American bisexual, searching for a new direction in life and juggling her identities. The Bisexual may cover some of the same themes.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘New Yorker Leila (Akhavan) is feeling lost in London. Recently part of an uber-cool power couple, she’s now split from girlfriend Sadie and is struggling to adjust. Moving in with a “stranger off the internet” she soon discovers she’s swapped her luxe old life (think: high quality condiments, plus a girlfriend who sorted all of the Life Admin) for a house-share with Gabe, a British guy who’s only ever other female “flat-mate” was his mum.

‘Gabe doesn’t know any lesbians and Leila’s not got too much experience of hanging out with heterosexuals – their worlds collide in deeply awkward and revealing ways as he becomes her unlikely wingman and helps her to navigate her new life dating men. Offering an outsider’s view of Britain, The Bisexual is brimming with weird and wonky slices of urban life only apparent to those living on a temporary work visa, struggling to keep up with the discrepancy between what the English say versus how they actually feel. Leila is part brave, part reckless, 100% shameless and is embarking on a romantic Choose Your Own Adventure, trudging through the hell of dating – gay and straight.’

Channel 4’s Deputy Head of Comedy Nerys Evans, comments: “We are thrilled to be working with Desiree on her series The Bisexual. She has such a brilliantly unique viewpoint on finding love in your 30s. We love her candid observations, both on being an outsider in a strange city as well as the sexual politics encountered when you are neither straight nor gay. She’s honest, authentic and brilliantly funny in her delivery.”

Akhavan meanwhile says: ”Getting to play in the sandbox with such intelligent collaborators at Sister Pictures and Channel 4 is an absolute dream come true. They’re the perfect partners in crime for a taboo sex comedy. And by that I mean they’re all perverts.”

It’s not clear when the series will air.

Mark Ruffalo Addresses Controversy Over Matt Bomer’s Casting As Transgender Sex Worker

September 1, 2016 By Tim Isaac 2 Comments

mark-ruffaloShortly after it began to become widely known that Mat Bomer is playing a transgender sex worker in the recently filmed Anything, a backlash began. Many in the trans community felt the casting was inappropriate, setting off a bit of a storm on social media.

The anger stemmed from people feeling cisgender men should not play trans characters (with some suggesting that it helped reinforce prejudices that trans people are merely wearing a costume), that the movie was playing with a dangerous trope of trans women as sex workers, and that by casting Bomer they had deprived a trans actress of what could have been her big break. Initially bother Bomer and executive producer Mark Ruffalo made no comment, but now Ruffalo has addressed the controversy on Twitter.

He says: ‘To the Trans community. I hear you. It’s wrenching to you see you in this pain. I am glad we are having this conversation. It’s time… In all honesty I suggested Matt for the role after the profound experience I had with him while making “The Normal Heart”.’

Some welcomed Ruffalo’s comments, such as trans actress Jen Richards. Her heartfelt anger at news of the casting was one of the main catalysts for the anger felt, with her comments including that ‘When @MattBomer plays a trans sex worker, he is telling the world that underneath it all, trans women like me are still really just men… Dear @MarkRuffalo & @MattBomer: if you release this movie, it will directly lead to violence against already at risk trans women.’ However, after Ruffalo spoke out, she replied, ‘Thank you @MarkRuffalo, this means a lot. I would love to talk to you about it, and how to move forward positively.’

However, others were less welcoming, suggesting that a conversation wasn’t what was needed – a change of direction was. As the movie is already in the can, it’s unlikely Bomer could be recast, but the hope will be that the protest will have an effect on both Anything and the casting/depiction of trans characters in the future. Take A Sneak Peek At The Live-Action Beauty & The Beast

September 1, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

beauty-and-the-beast-slideI’d imagine even Disney didn’t realise just how anticipated their live-action version Beauty & The Beast would be. But they got a taste when a teaser – featuring no footage from the movie – broke Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ record for the most online views for a trailer in 24 hours. Now we have a little bit more from the movie.

Disney has released a small chunk of a featurette about the new movie which will feature on the 25th Anniversary Blu-ray of the animated version, which is out soon. The Sneak Peek gives us a look at Emma Watson and Dan Stevens at a table reading, as well as concept images and footage from the film.

While most of Disney’s live-action takes on its classic animated movies have reimagined the story, this time it will be a more straightforward musical adaptation, featuring the classic songs and characters. The movie will be out next March. [Read more…]

Seed Money Trailer – Looking at the life gay porn producer turned philanthropist Chuck Holmes

August 31, 2016 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

seed-money-slideYou don’t normally think of pornographers as being philanthropists – indeed the stereotype is that they’re sleazy, greedy and out for themselves. However, Falcon Studios founder Chuck Holmes wasn’t like that, as the documentary Seed Money explore.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Seed Money is the story of Chuck Holmes, a San Francisco pornographer turned philanthropist. Holmes helped create and shape gay identity in the years after Stonewall, and later became a major contributor to gay advocacy groups like the Human Rights Campaign and the LGBT Victory Fund. Later in life he would come to find that, while his money was welcome in philanthropic circles, he sometimes wasn’t.’

Breaking Glass Pictures should be releasing the film in the US soon. Take a look at the trailer for the doc below. [Read more…]
