New Posters: Wonder Woman, Kong: Skull Island, LEGO Batman Movie, Fantastic Beasts & More

July 23, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

kong-skull-island-poster-slideWith Comic-Con kicking off in Sand Diego, movie studios have been lining up to release new posters for their upcoming movies. That includes Wonder Woman, Kong: Skull Island, The LEGO Batman Movie, Fantastic Beasts & Where To Find Them, War Dogs and King Arthur.

All of those movies will be hoping to excite fanboys at the Californian event, and hopefully many of them will be releasing some trailer/footage for the rest of us too. First up though it’s the posters.

We’ve also posted the first official image from Kong: Skull Island, showing Tom Hiddleston and Brie Larson, alongside evidence that they’re going to be dealing with some ridiculously large apes. However, like earlier promos, Kong bones suggest this will deal with a species in decline, leaving King Kong as the last of his kind.

Take a look at the posters and pic below. [Read more…]

This Live-Action Futurama Fan Film Trailer May Be The Coolest & Strangest Thing You See Today

July 21, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

futurama-fan-o-ramaMatt Groening’s Futurama may never have been as big as his other major creation, The Simpsons, but it’s still extremely popular. So much so that someone has now made a fan trailer for a live-action Futurama film.

If you’ve seen the cartoon, you may not think it would be possible to transport it into the live-action realm and keep it looking exactly like Futurama, including Leela’s single-eye, a prehistoric looking Professor Farnsworth and an endearingly low-tech take on the robot, Bender.

The makers, Cinema Relics, say on the film’s website: ‘In the year 2014 one man, Dan Lanigan, in addition to other men, and some women, set out on a quest to become the first person in his family to create a live-action Futurama fan film. He is now regarded by most of his immediate kin as the foremost authority on the subject. This is his story.

‘Of course, he was far too lazy to do it alone. Dan sought out the greatest mind/ego of his age, Martin Moonwalker Meunier to help him invent new technologies, techniques, and recipes to bring the visual realism sorely lacking in the cartoon. He signed on the attractive Kody Frederick to star, help write and produce, as well as add the sex-appeal sorely lacking in the cartoon. He engaged his niece, Katie Lanigan, to act, help produce, and add the nepotism sorely lacking in the cartoon. He activated the legendary Garzatron, a synthetic being capable of carrying on 16 conversations at once with himself, to help design and build stuff. Adam Cook was raised from the dead in accordance with ancient Swedish prophecy to help produce. Dan secured the musical genius, Eric Diaz, a talented singer-songwriter, to make costumes. He brought aboard Andy Klimczak so he wouldn’t be the only fat guy on set. He also acted and helped write.’

And that statement should give you a taste or just how nutty but oddly inspired this is. Take a look at the live-action Futurama trailer below. It’s not known when the finished fan film, Fan-O-Rama, will be completed/released, but it’s certainly something to look out for.

Dane DeHaan Is Looking Cool In A New Valerian & The City Of A Thousand Planets Pic

July 21, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

valerian-picFor many, Valerian & The City Of A Thousand Planets is a bit of an unknown quantity. While Luc Besson is behind the camera, it’s not something they’ll have heard much about. That’s something that makers will be hoping to change with theor upcoming Comic-Con panel. However, there are some who are very excited about the sci-fi movie, which is based on a classic graphic novel that  helped inspire the likes of Star Wars and Avatar.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Rooted in the classic graphic novel series, Valerian and Laureline- visionary writer/director Luc Besson advances this iconic source material into a contemporary, unique and epic science fiction saga.

‘Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne) are special operatives for the government of the human territories charged with maintaining order throughout the universe. Valerian has more in mind than a professional relationship with his partner- blatantly chasing after her with propositions of romance. But his extensive history with women, and her traditional values, drive Laureline to continuously rebuff him.

‘Under directive from their Commander (Clive Owen), Valerian and Laureline embark on a mission to the breathtaking intergalactic city of Alpha, an ever-expanding metropolis comprised of thousands of different species from all four corners of the universe. Alpha’s seventeen million inhabitants have converged over time- uniting their talents, technology and resources for the betterment of all. Unfortunately, not everyone on Alpha shares in these same objectives; in fact, unseen forces are at work, placing our race in great danger.’

A new image from the movie has been released, where it has to be said, DeHaan is looking very cool. The film will be in cinemas next year.

New Power Rangers Pic Unmasks The New Heroes

July 21, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

power-rangers-picThe makers of the new Power Rangers movie are certainly trying to build the hype, while also attempting to underline that this time around it won’t be so cheesy, the old-style spandex suits are history and, presumably, the special effects won’t be men in suits stomping on models of buildings. Now a new pic has been released giving us a fresh look at the line-up of heroes.

In the pic above, from left to right you have Kimberly the Pink Ranger (Naomi Scott), Billy the Blue Ranger (RJ Cyler), Jason the Red Ranger (Dacre Montgomery), Zack the Black Ranger (Ludi Lin), and Trini the Yellow Ranger (Becky G). What we don’t see are Elizabeth Banks as the new Rita Repulsa and Bryan Cranston as Zordon.

The movie is due in cinemas early next year. Click here to check out the recent character posters.

Turns Out John Cho Had Misgivings About Gay Sulu Too

July 20, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

star-trek-beyond-john-cho-hikaru-suluWhat was supposed to be a progressive moment for blockbuster cinema got a little more complicated after it turned out George Takei wasn’t overly impressed with Sulu becoming gay in the rebooted franchise. While Takei later clarified that he was delighted there was a gay character would just have preferred it not to be Sulu, it turns out he’s not the only one who was uncertain, as John Cho was too, who plays the new version of the character.

Talking to avclub he says, “I was concerned for a few reasons. I was concerned that George wouldn’t like it, and it turned out to be true. But I was actually concerned that he wouldn’t like it for a different reason. I thought that George would object because he’s a gay actor who was playing straight. I know that was difficult, that he couldn’t come out and that he had crafted a straight character. Then, now, because he’s an activist and he’s out of the closet—clearly, this is an homage a little bit to him—[I worried] he would object to us taking that from his life and say, “Hey, I was a gay actor who created a straight character, and now you’re making him gay because I’ve come out of the closet?,” that we were just seeing him for his sexual orientation. So I thought that would be where he would object. It turns out not to be his objection. But that’s what I was worried about.”

He also had a couple of other worries, adding, “Asian men have been basically eunuchs in American cinema and television, and I thought maybe it would be seen as a continuation of that”.

Cho also wondered if it might accidentally send the wrong message, as, “I was concerned that because this is the same genetic Sulu—although we’re in an alternate timeline—that we would be inadvertently implying that sexual orientation was a choice.”

However, he ultimately thinks it’s a very good thing. “We’re executing [Star Trek creator Gene] Roddenberry’s intent, I think: infinite diversity in infinite combinations. It’s very much a part of the ethos of Star Trek. I have to say, all things considered, it’s working great, and I’m proud of it,’ he says.

There is something we won’t be see though, which is a kiss between Sulu and his husband, as it’s been cut. Cho told Vulture, “It wasn’t like a make-out session. We’re at the airport with our daughter. It was a welcome-home kiss. I’m actually proud of that scene, because it was pretty tough. We’re two straight guys and had to get to a very loving, intimate place. It was hard to do on the fly. We had to open up. It came off well, in my view.”

Surprisingly, Sulu’s husband is played by the film’s co-screenwriter, Doug Jung, as, “We were in Vancouver first and we finished up the production in Dubai and that scene was in Dubai and I was like, ‘Hey, so who’d you get?’ They were like, ‘We can’t find anybody! Doug may have to play him!’ It started out as a joke. I was like, ‘Haha.’ And then at some point they were not joking. We definitely had trouble finding East Asians first off, and then actors willing to play gay. We had a guy and then his parents really objected. Basically, we couldn’t find an Asian actor willing to play gay in Dubai is my understanding.”

However, it was important to Cho that Sulu had an Asian husband, but perhaps not for the reasons you might think. He says, “Basically it was a little Valentine to the gay Asian friends that I grew up with. This may be presumptuous, but I always felt the Asian gay men that I knew had much heavier cultural-shame issues. This is probably more so for my generation than for yours, but I felt like those guys didn’t date Asian men because of that cultural shame. So I wanted it to seem really normal in the future. I thought that would be the most normal thing, that there was zero shame in the future. I don’t know if that hit or not, but it was something that I felt in my gut and asked for that.”

Moana International Trailer – Take a look at Disney’s Polynesian princess as a baby

July 20, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

moana-slideAfter taking us into a city of talking animals with Zootopia – which recently hit a truly impressive $1bn worldwide at the box office – Disney is heading back into the world of princesses with Moana. However, rather than a chilly fantasy like Frozen, this one is set in Polynesia. A new international trailer has arrived, which gives us a look at the princess as a baby, and her magical relationship with the ocean.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Three thousand years ago, the greatest sailors in the world voyaged across the vast South Pacific, discovering the many islands of Oceania. But then, for a millennium, their voyages stopped – and no one today knows why. From Walt Disney Animation Studios comes “Moana,” a sweeping, CG-animated adventure about a spirited teenager who sails out on a daring mission to prove herself a master wayfinder and fulfil her ancestors’ unfinished quest.

‘During her journey, she meets the once-mighty demi-god Maui (voice of Dwayne Johnson), and together, they traverse the open ocean on an action-packed voyage, encountering enormous fiery creatures and impossible odds. Directed by the renowned filmmaking team of Ron Clements and John Musker (“The Little Mermaid,” “Aladdin,” “The Princess & the Frog”), “Moana” sails into UK cinemas 2 December, 2016.’ [Read more…]

xXx: The Return Of Xander Cage Trailer – Vin Diesel is back as the extreme sports super-spy

July 20, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

xxx-return-of-xander-cage-slideVin Diesel is making a bit of a habit of leaving franchises before returning later. He did it with Fast & Furious, and after playing Xander Cage in 2002’s xXx, he bowed out for the sequel, which starred Ice Cube.

Now, 15 years after the first film, he’s returning to the series for xXx: The Return Of Xander Cage, which also sees Samuel L. Jackson back as Agent Augustus Eugene Gibbons. Not a vast amount of official info about the plot has been released, other than that, ‘Xander Cage is left for dead after an incident, though he secretly returns to action for a new, tough assignment with his handler Augustus Gibbons.’

It’s also keen to promise Girls, Guns, and Global Domination, with the rest of the trailer largely devoted to some incredibly OTT action, including some jungle skiing and extreme sports nuttiness. The film should be out early next year. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

Looking & Mean Girls’ Daniel Franzese Has Announced His Engagement

July 19, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

daniel-franzese-engagementDaniel Franzese gained a huge amount of fans as the ‘too gay to function’ Damian in Mean Girls, and since then he’s popped up in War Of The Worlds, I Spit On You Grave and more recently HBO’s Looking. However, he’s currently got something a bit more exciting that his acting resume happening in his life, as he’s announced that he’s engaged to boyfriend Joseph Bradley Phillips.

Franzese was the one who popped the question, asking Joey to marry him in a Starbucks in North Hollywood where the duo had their first date. The actor apparently gave the ring to a barista, who then called out ‘Mr and Mr Franzese!’ when the coffees were ready (which might sound a little presumptuous that Joey’s going to take his name, but his reps have already confirmed they will both be Mr. Franzese once married, so presumably it’s something they’d already talked about). Instead of coffee, Joey was given a cup with the ring inside, at which point Daniel dropped to one knee.

“Since I first saw you here, you have opened your heart to me, and I vow to God that for the rest of my life to honor and protect that heart if you will be my husband. Will you marry me?” said Franzese.

Luckily Joey said yes. Congratulations to both of them. [Read more…]

Final Star Trek Beyond Trailer – Get ready to boldly go once more

July 19, 2016 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

star-trek-beyondBefore it even started filming, some had decided that the fact Fast & Furious helmer Justin Lin was directing Star Trek Beyond meant it was going to be a disaster. However, the early buzz is that they should have had a lot more faith, with many suggesting this it the best of the rebooted Star Trek bunch.

With only a few days until release, a final trailer has been released to ensure our appetites are suitably whetted.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘”Star Trek Beyond,” the highly anticipated next installment in the globally popular Star Trek franchise, created by Gene Roddenberry and reintroduced by J.J. Abrams in 2009, returns with director Justin Lin (“The Fast and the Furious” franchise) at the helm of this epic voyage of the U.S.S. Enterprise and her intrepid crew.  In “Beyond,” the Enterprise crew explores the furthest reaches of uncharted space, where they encounter a mysterious new enemy who puts them and everything the Federation stands for to the test.’

The film will be in cinemas on Friday. [Read more…]
