New Coming Out Trailer – Charlie David produces a series about LGBT life in Montreal

January 7, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Charlie David turned heads as an actor in the gay-themed likes of Dante’s Cove and A Four Letter Word, and has become a big of a queer cinema tour de force, writing Mulligans, directing the documentary I’m A Porn Star and producing Judas Kiss and Truth.

He’s also produced Coming Out, a mini-series which should be coming to DVD in the UK on February 10th from TLA Releasing.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘The explosive lives, loves and losses of an intermingled group of Montréalers are explored as they confront the subject of difference. Managing a modern relationship can be a mess. Single? Attached? Married? Divorced? Open? Closed? The most common answer is ‘It’s complicated.’ Get ready to come out with these characters as they negotiate acceptance, prejudice and just how much they’re willing to risk in the pursuit of love and happiness. Mat (Mathieu Blanchard) is a gay fashion photographer with nothing out of his reach until his ex, Ian (Marc-André Poliquin) resurfaces. Meanwhile, Hugo (Patrick Martin) pursues a secret relationship with Olivier (Sébastien Beaulac), a married father who keeps the closet door firmly shut. And finally, Téo (Dhanaé Audet-Beaulieu), is a young man who turns to drugs and prostitution after a messy coming out to his parents. Unaware of how close to home his struggles may come, Caroline (Mélanie Pilon) tries to help Téo get his life back together.’ [Read more…]

Liza Minnelli Says She’ll Give Matthew McConaughey Her Oscar If He Doesn’t Win His Own This Year

January 7, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

liza-minnelliLiza Minnelli likes The Dallas Buyers Club so much that she has started her own mini campaign to get the HIV-themed movie some Oscars. Nomination ballots are due on Wednesday, but yesterday as a New York Luncheon with Oscar voters, Minnelli turned up to toast the movie and wasn’t lacking in her praise for Matthew McConaughey.

THR reports that she told attendees, “I have nothing to do with this film except that I am a fan of how it was done, of the insight and the way they played these characters. And the fact that you were watching something that wasn’t necessarily comfortable but you could not stop watching. It drew you in, whether you wanted it to or not, and that’s magic. That’s magic. I mean, the last one [that did that for me] was ‘On the Waterfront.’ [laughs] You, crazy Matthew, losing all of that weight [pats her stomach] — it’s one thing to lose all of that weight and to look like that — that’s harrowing enough — but then to run like you did, with a body like that? And Jared, I mean, everything that you did — all of the placements, every single second — I felt wonderful for you, proud of you and sorry for you all at the same time, which I think one only feels for your friends. And Jennifer [Garner] was great — she was just f—ing great! [laughs] I don’t know what else to say. I haven’t seen a movie like that in so long, and I’m so proud to be able to tell everybody. And honey [addressing McConaughey], if you don’t win the Academy Award, I’m giving you mine!”

Liza of course won the Best Actress Oscar for Cabaret in 1973.

Here’s the Dallas Buyers Club synopsis: ‘Based on the incredible true story of Texan rodeo cowboy Ron Woodroof and his battle with the medical establishment and pharmaceutical companies after being diagnosed as HIV-positive in 1986. Starring Matthew McConaughey (Mud, Killer Joe, Magic Mike), Jared Leto (Requiem for a Dream, Fight Club) and Jennifer Garner (Juno).’

Brokeback Mountain Has Become An Opera In Spain

January 7, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

brokeback-mountain-600px
Brokeback Mountain started life as a great but very short story by Annie Proulx, before becoming an Oscar winning movie starring Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal as Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist, two young men hired to look after sheep who start a years long love affair.

Now the tale’s moving to another medium, as BroadwayWorld.com reports that it’s set to open as an opera in Madrid later this month. Charles Wuorinen is the composer, with Proulx returning to her own story by working on the libretto.

It’s doesn’t directly ape either the movie of the original short story, as the opera is described as ‘grittier’ than the film, with tighter characterisation, as well as thee addition of a ghost and a chorus. Canadian bass-baritone Daniel Okulitch takes on the role of Ennis, while American tenor Tom Randle is Jack.

The openly gay Wuorinen describes it as, “A story of doomed love, in this case a complex homosexual relationship taking place in a very homophobic society.”

Broadwayworld seems fairly impressed with the music, saying the “Score evokes the mountains with its swells and strains, bringing to life the harshly imposing Wyoming landscape from which the story was born.”

The opera was originally meant to be first staged in America, as it was commissioned by the New York City Opera, which was well known for producing new works with popular culture interest, such as opera based on Where The Wild Things Are, as well one about the life of Anne Nicole Smith. However that organisation is now defunct, and when the company’s director, Gerard Mortier, resigned, he took Brokeback Mountain to the Teatro Real in Madrid. It will now premiere there on January 28th.

First Image Of Adam Sandler In The Cobbler Arrives

January 7, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

cobbler-preview-pic1The Cobbler came together really quickly, largely because the time between Adam Sandler deciding to make it and when he’d be need on the set of Jason Reitman’s Men, Women & Children was very short. So only a few weeks after it was officially announced in September, a (surprisingly good) cast was rounded up and the movie went into production.

Now the first image from the movie has arrived, which you can see above.

Sandler plays the title character, a shoe repairman blessed with the ability to enter the lives of his customers. The likes of Dan Stevens, Dustin Hoffman, Method Man, Steve Buscemi plays a character named Manny.

Thomas McCarthy is directing from a screenplay he co-wrote with Paul Sado. Of the film McCarthy tells EW, “I lived above a shoe-repair shop in New York City that I used to walk by every day, and I always just kind of was fascinated with it, looking in and seeing an endless maze of shoes sitting around. I was kind of thinking about the expression of, ‘You don’t know a man until you walk a mile in his shoes’ one day and what the origin of that was and what that would mean to translate that into a story.”

Spidey Faces Electro In Three New Amazing Spider-man 2 Posters

January 7, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

amazing-spider-man-2-poster6
If there’s something we can take away from these brand new posters, it’s that Electro in The Amazing Spider-man 2 seems to be stuck in one position, as he’s exactly the same no matter where he and Spider are. Presumably in the film he’ll be more active and won’t simply float around with one leg slightly bent all the time.

Other than that they’re pretty cool and suitably comic-infused images, which its nice to see are selling the colour of the movie, rather than following the gloomy Dark Knight inspired imagery other superhero movies have gone for.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘We’ve always known that Spider-Man’s most important battle has been within himself: the struggle between the ordinary obligations of Peter Parker and the extraordinary responsibilities of Spider-Man. But in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Peter Parker finds that a greater conflict lies ahead.

‘It’s great to be Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield). For Peter Parker, there’s no feeling quite like swinging between skyscrapers, embracing being the hero, and spending time with Gwen (Emma Stone). But being Spider-Man comes at a price: only Spider-Man can protect his fellow New Yorkers from the formidable villains that threaten the city. With the emergence of Electro (Jamie Foxx), Peter must confront a foe far more powerful than he. And as his old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, Peter comes to realize that all of his enemies have one thing in common: OsCorp.’

First Look At The Comedy Tammy, Featuring Susan Sarandon & Melissa McCarthy

January 7, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

tammy-pic1
Melissa McCarthy is stretching her wings with Tammy, which she doesn’t just star in but also co-wrote and produces. She was also due to co-direct, but in the end those duties went solely to her hubby, Ben Falcone.

Now the first image has arrived, featuring McCarthy alongside Susan Sarandon.

The movie is about Tammy (McCarthy), who loses her job at a fast food restaurant and discovers her husband is cheating on her at the same time. She decides to take a road trip with her profane, whiskey-swilling grandmother (Sarandon). Dan Aykroyd and Mark Duplass also star.

The film will be out this summer.

In Bloom Trailer – One summer with a Chicago gay couple in the new LGBT movie

January 6, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

TLA Releasing is set to bring out In Bloom later this year and ahead of that they’ve released a trailer for the film, which they’re comparing to the gay hit Weekend.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Reminiscent of “indie” hit WEEKEND, IN BLOOM is the most realistic depiction of a gay relationship to come out in some time. Add the foreboding threat of a killer on the loose, and this incredibly rich and rewarding film becomes unmissable. Kurt and Paul seem very solid and in love, living large in their home city of Chicago, thanks in part to Kurt’s successful pot-dealing business. Everything is going their way. But when a sexy young customer makes a play for Kurt, it sets of a chain of events that not only puts their perfect relationship at risk, but possibly even their lives.’

The film has had decent notices at LGBT film festivals, so it’ll be worth checking out when it comes to DVD and VoD. [Read more…]

Has Ian McKellan Accidentally Outed Lee Pace & Another Hobbit Co-Star?

January 6, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Lee Pace

Lee Pace

It seemed Ian McKellen thought he was making a fairly innocuous comment. He made it back in 2012 to the German magazine Brash, where he talked about how far gay actors have come in the last 10 year.

He compared the lack of openly gay actor in Lord Of The Rings to The Hobbit, saying “Look only at how many gay actors are in Hobbit—two of the dwarves, along with Luke Evans, Stephen Fry and Lee Pace… In Lord of the Rings  I was the only one, apart from my make-up artist and a guy in wardrobe team. That is progress, or what?”

No one particularly noticed the comment at the time, but now it’s attracting a bit of attention, as McKellen may have accidentally outed a few people. While Stephen Fry is indeed out and proud, Evans used to be out but has now gone back inside again (not coincidentally he shut up about his sexuality when his career started taking off). Lee Pace meanwhile has never officially been out at all, despite a number of rumours. However McKellen seems pretty sure that he’s gay.

As for ‘two of the dwarfs’, the only openly gay one of their number is Adam Brown (who plays Ori). The rediscovered comment from Sir has led to speculation the other dwarf is Richard Armitage (Thorin), who’s previously been subject to rumours he’s dating Pace. However there’s no actual evidence of that, so we’ll leave you to speculate on who it might be.

Lily Tomlin Marries Her Longtime Partner Jane Wagner

January 6, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jane-wagner-lily-tomlinLily Tomlin and Jane Wagner have been together for 42 years, but it’s only now that they can get married in their home state of California, and that’s just what they’ve done.

Gossip columnist Liz Smith let slip the news, saying, ‘And my longtime friends, Lily Tomlin and her love, the writer Jane Wagner, got married on the eve of 2014. … My wish is that their happiness will be as great as their combined talents.’

When she got engaged last August she said she wanted the ceremony to be anything but traditional. “No rings, no bridal dresses,” she said, adding. “Maybe we’ll be dressed like chickens.”

As yet, there’s no news if avian wedding outfits were indeed involved in their nuptials.

Channing Tatum Leaps Into Action In A New Jupiter Ascending Image

January 6, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jupiter-ascending-pic2
Last month the first trailer for the Wachowski’s Jupiter Ascending arrived, which showed us Channing Tatum looking surprisingly pixie-like. Now we get another look at him as he leaps into action in the movie, all guns blazing.

It’s certainly one of the most intriguing movies of the year.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis star in “Jupiter Ascending,” an original science fiction epic adventure from filmmakers Lana and Andy Wachowski.

‘Jupiter Jones (Kunis) was born under a night sky, with signs predicting that she was destined for great things. Now grown, Jupiter dreams of the stars but wakes up to the cold reality of a job cleaning other people’s houses and an endless run of bad breaks. Only when Caine (Tatum), a genetically engineered ex-military hunter, arrives on Earth to track her down does Jupiter begin to glimpse the fate that has been waiting for her all along—her genetic signature marks her as next in line for an extraordinary inheritance that could alter the balance of the cosmos.

‘From the streets of Chicago to far flung galaxies whirling through space, “Jupiter Ascending” is written and directed by the Wachowskis. Award-winning producer Grant Hill, with whom they have collaborated since “The Matrix” Trilogy, is producing, together with Lana Wachowski and Andy Wachowski. Roberto Malerba and Bruce Berman serve as executive producers.’

It’s due out in July.
