Christopher Nolan Plans To Go Interstellar With A New Sci-fi Flick

January 10, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Christopher-NolanMany directors like to have loads of projects on the go in various stages of development, but Christopher Nolan prefers to have one at a time that he can devote all his energies to. Since The Dark Knight Rises was released last summer, we haven’t known what Nolan would helm next, but now THR reveals that Chris is taking on Interstellar, based on a script by his brother, Jonathan.

The movie swirls around the ideas of theoretical physicist, gravitational physicist and astrophysicist Kip Thorne, with the story involving time travel and alternate dimensions, and sees a group of explorers travelling through a wormhole. That certainly gives plenty of scope for some Inception style visual inventiveness as well as offering plenty of ideas.

I would say we should expect more plot details soon, but known Nolan’s love of secrecy, we probably won’t know much until shortly before it’s released. However if you do want an idea of what we’re dealing with, it’s been suggested you read Kip Thorne’s book, Black Holes and Time Warps: Einstein’s Outrageous Legacy.

Spielberg was previously attached to direct, but it’s not clear if he remains involved in any way, although he probably is as it’s said he hatched the original idea for the film. Paramount and Warner Bros will co-produce, but there’s no news on when it might shoot.

Don Scardino Will Get Old Guys Robbing Banks In Going In Style Remake

January 10, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

don-scardinoDon Scardino’s feature directorial debut, the Steve Carrell starrer The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, doesn’t arrive in cinemas until March, but the 30 Rock producer is already planning his follow-up, with THR reporting that he’s signed up for a remake of Going In Syle.

The 1979 original starred George Burns, Art Carney and Lee Strasberg as a group of old guys who are sick of just sitting around waiting around to die. They decide to spice up their lives in rather extreme fashion by planning to rob a bank.

There seems to be a bit of a theme developing in Hollywood for movies about funny older people, probably due to the fact they’ve suddenly realised there are an awful lot of pensioners who’ve been lacking movie entertainment, and also that many of film’s biggest stars are now getting on a bit. We’ve had the likes of Red, and this year we get Stand Up Guys (with Al Pacino, Christopher Walken and Al Arkin) and Last Vegas (with Morgan Freeman, Robert De Niro, Kevin Kline and Michael Douglas).

If they do well, expect to see many more, including Going In Style.

Comedy Website Funny Or Die Plans Push Into Movies

January 10, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

funny-or-die-logoOnce Upon A Time National Lampoon was like a badge of quality for a movie, but over the years it’s currency has been seriously devalued, largely due to the fact it was prepared to sell the name to any movie, no matter how dreadful.

Now it looks like the website Funny Or Die, which was launched by Will Ferrell and Adam McKay, and Chris Henchy, is hoping to become the new National Lampoon by pushing further into producing movies.

They had a test run last year with Tim and Eric’s Billion Dollar Movie, although that didn’t specifically add the Funny Or Die name to the title, and they’ve also come up with the TV series Funny Or Die Presents. Now THR reports that the comedy website has teamed with producer Scott Steindorff and his Scott Pictures, with the aim of producing two or three movies per year.

Steindorff himself makes the National Lampoon comparison, saying “The hope is that in one of the two or three movies, we find the next Animal House or breakaway comedy.” Lampoon started out as a satirical magazine before it went into films.

The hope is to get two movies into production this summer, and then continue that model for several years. Budgets will vary from micro-budget pictures to $25 million-plus projects. As yet no specific movies have been announced.

Director Dan Trachtenberg Takes On Y: The Last Man

January 10, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

dan-trachtenbergAn adaptation of Brian K. Vaughan’s comic book series, Y: The Last Man, has been in the works for years, but hit various roadblocks such as directors like D.J. Caruso and Louis Leterrier coming and going from the movie, as well as issues with the script. However last autumn New Line Cinema made the project a priority after receiving a screenplay they liked from Matthew Federman and Stephen Scaia.

Now Variety reports has brought on Dan Trachtenberg to direct the Y: The Last Man adaptation. Trachtenberg is best known for directing the short Portal: No Escape, based on the popular Portal video game, and since that short ignited Hollywood interest, he’s been flirting with various projects.

Y: The Last Man follows Yorick Brown, a young man who, along with his pet monkey, become the only two male mammals on Earth, after a bizarre, cataclysmic event wipes out every other male on the planet, both human and animal. Yorick teams with a government operative known only as 355, to try and get to the bottom of this world-changing event.

It isn’t known when the movie might shoot.

Ang Lee Flirting With Angelina Jolie’s Cleopatra

January 10, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ang-leeThe idea of directing a movie about Cleopatra, with Angelina Jolie starring, has certainly fired up the interest of some top directors, with the likes of Paul Greengrass, James Cameron and more recently David Fincher all flirting with the project. However after Fincher dropped out last summer, the film has been waiting for someone to pick it up again.

Now THR reports that Ang Lee is showing interest, with the director himself stating that, “I’m about to read the script. It just feels right to me after all the other types of films I’ve done. What does it have in common with any of them? They’re all totally different! That’s what makes this perfect.”

Of course if he hasn’t read the script, he’s a long way from actually signing on, but I’m sure there are a lot of people who’d like to see what an Ang Lee directed Cleopatra would look like. Brian Helgeland wrote the first draft of that screenplay, before Eric Roth stepped in to do a rewrite in late 2011, working from Stacy Schiff‘s biography Cleopatra: A Life.

Producer Scott Rudin has previously described the film as, “It is a completely revisionist Cleopatra, a much more grown-up sophisticated version… She’s not a sex kitten, she’s a politician, strategist, warrior. In the Joseph Mankiewicz movie, Elizabeth Taylor is a seductress, but the histories of Cleopatra have been written by men. This is the first to be written by a woman. It felt like such a blow-the-doors-off-the-hinges idea of how to tell it, impossible to resist.”

Even if Lee signs on, it may be tough to get the greenlight on the film, as it’s bound to be expensive and historical epic tend to be financially risky endeavours.

Steven Spielberg Puts Robopocalypse On Hold As It’s Too Expensive & Not Ready

January 10, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Steven-SpielbergWhen Steven Spielberg added Chris Hemsworth, Ben Whishaw and Anne Hathaway to the cast of Robopocalypse last autumn, the stated plan was to start shooting the movie this March, with a release date set of April 25th, 2014. However THR reveals that the director has now put the entire movie on indefinite hold.

Spielberg’s spokesperson, Marvin Levy, says, “(It is) too important and the script is not ready, and it’s too expensive to produce. It’s back to the drawing board to see what is possible.”

The screenplay adaptation of Daniel H. Wilson’s sci-fi novel was written by Drew Goddard (The Cabin in the Woods). It isn’t known if Dreamworks is seeking new writers. The film is set during the aftermath of a robotic uprising, focusing on how humanity has adapted after the machines took over.

We’ll have to wait and see if this means Spielberg will take on a different project instead of Robopocalyse while he waits for the huge sci-fi project to be ready.

GALECA (Gay and Lesbian Entertainment Critics Association) Announce Award Nominees

January 9, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

dorian galeca
The BAFTA award nominees were announced this morning and the Oscars reveal their shortlist tomorrow, but now it’s time for a list that’s much closer to our hearts (not least because I’m a member), as GALECA – the Gay & Lesbian Entertainment Critics Association – has announced the nominees for their Dorian Awards.

This year GALECA has put Argo, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Keep the Lights On, Les Miserables, Lincoln and Moonrise Kingdom up for its Best Picture Award, while Any Day Now, Cloud Atlas, Gayby, Keep the Lights On and The Perks of Being a Wallflower are up for LGBT Film Of The Year.

Keeping things fresh GALECA also has some more unusual categories, such as Unsing Film Of The Year (Bernie, The Cabin in the Woods, Chronicle, Holy Motors, Looper and Your Sister’s Sister), and Campy Film Of The Year (2016: Obama’s America, Cloud Atlas, Magic Mike, The Paperboy, Pitch Perfect, Rock of Ages), which goes to an OTT movie rather than something deliberately trying to be camp.

Sir Ian McKellan will also be honoured with the Timeless Award, ‘honoring an actor or performer whose exemplary career has been marked by character, wisdom and wit’. He certainly deserves it both for his exemplary career and his outspoken and ceaseless LGBT advocacy.

The winners will be announced on January 16th. GALECA was founded in 2008 and consists of around 80 film and TV critics and entertainment journalists. Take a look below for the full list of nominees (via THR):

Jennifer Lawrence Gets Close To Sam Claflin In First Look At Hunger Games: Catching Fire

January 9, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

hunger-games-catching-fire-ew-pic1After the huge success of The Hunger Games, there are a lot of people avidly looking forward to the follow up, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, which is due for release on November 22nd. Now EW has released our first look at the movie with the image above and the cover below.

Both images feature Jennifer Lawrence’s Karniss Everdeen alongside new character Finnick Odair, played by British actor Sam Claflin (Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides). Finnick is a previous Hunger Games champion who like Katniss is called up to be sent back into the arena. He’s known for being cocky, arrogant and very much a ladies man, but as we slowly discover, things aren’t quite as they appear.

Francis Lawrence directs, taking over from Gary Ross who made the first film.

Eastsiders Gay-themed Web Series Launches Kickstarter Campaign

January 9, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

In December we posted the first episode of a great looking new web-series called Eastsiders, which we’ve embedded it again above, along with the second episode (which will play after the first). Now the people behind the series are looking for cash to complete the first season of nine 10-15 minute episodes, and have set up a Kickstarter campaign to raise $15,000.

In only a couple of days, they’ve already raised $8,500 of their target, but every penny the make above the $15,000 target will be used in making the series better, so it’s worth helping out if you want to see more.

Here’s the series’ set-up, ‘Set in Los Angeles’ iconic Silver Lake, Eastsiders follows a couple: Cal and Thom. They have problems. It’s some really dramatic stuff. Thom is cheating on Cal. Cal knows, but can’t bear the thought of losing Thom. Oh yeah, and they’re gay, if you haven’t already figured that out. But that’s not a problem.’ Soap star Van Hansis, who has been nominated for three Daytime Emmies, plays one half of the gay couple, opposite series creator Kit Williamson.

Eastsiders certainly got off to a great start with is first couple of episodes, showing that the web isn’t just a place for silliness and that there’s an audience for well written drama about interesting subjects. We’d certainly like to see more of the show, so hopefully the Kickstarter will go well.

The Last Exorcism Part II Trailer – This one’s going to be even last-erer

January 9, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

They should have thought that calling a film The Last Exorcism makes any sequels sound a bit daft, but the 2010 movie was successful enough to get a Part 2, and now the trailer for the sequel has arrived. However, while the first film was a ‘found footage’ effort, it appears this one if a conventional movie.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Continuing where the first film left off, Nell Sweetzer (Ashley Bell) is found terrified and alone in rural Louisiana. Back in the relative safety of New Orleans, Nell realizes that she can’t remember entire portions of the previous months only that she is the last surviving member of her family. Just as Nell begins the difficult process of starting a new life, the evil force that once possessed her is back with other, unimaginably horrific plans that mean her last exorcism was just the beginning.’

Expect it in cinemas March 15th.
