He may be in his 70s but Steven Spielberg shows no signs of slowing down. He managed to slot in The Post while simultaneously making Ready Player One, something most directors half his age wouldn’t even contemplate let alone succeed at.
The Post is a bit of an old school flick, set in the 1970s and telling the story of the Pentagon Papers, a leaked set of documents that revealed that while in public the military and government was still positive about the war in Vietnam, privately many felt that it was unwinnable and that official finding bore this out. The authorities from President Richard Nixon downwards unsurprisingly didn’t want this made public, while the press felt it was imperative to publish it. [Read more…]
Synopsis: ‘The film is set in 2045, with the world on the brink of chaos and collapse. But the people have found salvation in the OASIS, an expansive virtual reality universe created by the brilliant and eccentric James Halliday (Mark Rylance). When Halliday dies, he leaves his immense fortune to the first person to find a digital Easter egg he has hidden somewhere in the OASIS, sparking a contest that grips the entire world. When an unlikely young hero named Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) decides to join the contest, he is hurled into a breakneck, reality-bending treasure hunt through a fantastical universe of mystery, discovery and danger.
Ready Player One is definitely one of the most intriguing movies of 2018 – a film packed to the brim with references to great films of the past – from King Kong to The Iron Giant to Back To The Future – directed by the great bearded one himself, Steven Spielberg. Now we can take a new look at the film, with the final trailer and poster, as well as a set of character posters, which you can take a look at below.
Opening with clips of classic Spielberg movies from Jaws and Close Encounters to ET and Jurassic Park, this Sizzle Reel is certainly keen to position Ready Player One as the next great adventure in the director’s long and storied career. It certainly makes the whole thing look pretty intriguing.
Steven Spielberg may be about to turn 71, but he’s showing no signs of slowing down. Indeed, the current political situation (i.e. Trump), caused him to slot in an extra movie that will be out soon, even though he was already busy making the big budget sci-fi movie, Ready Player One.
Ready Player One is one of the more intriguing movies of 2018. Ernest Cline’s novel was packed with references to 80s and 90s culture and films, including much of the work of Steven Spielberg. So when the great bearded one announced he was going to direct a movie version, many were intruigued about how they’d incorporate references to films owned by a wide variety of companies – especially as Spielberg said he would be going easy on references to his own films.
Back in March news emerged not just that Steven Spielberg was working on a film about the Pentagon Papers, but that he’d already got Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks onboard to star. Now the director has been filling out the acting ensemble, as Variety reports that Sarah Paulson, Bob Odenkirk, Matthew Rhys, Bradley Whitford, Carrie Coon, Jesse Plemons, David Cross, Alison Brie, Bruce Greenwood, Tracy Letts, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Zach Woods have all signed onto the movie. There’s no news on the exact roles they’ll play.
She’s one of the most storied actresses in film history, but Meryl Streep has never appeared on-screen in a Steven Spielberg movie. They have worked together, as Streep voiced one of the mechas in Spielberg’s AI, but it’s only now that she’s planning to get in front of the director’s lens, for the Post.
