The Post Trailer – Meryl Streep & Tom Hanks star in Spielberg’s free press drama

November 8, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Steven Spielberg may be about to turn 71, but he’s showing no signs of slowing down. Indeed, the current political situation (i.e. Trump), caused him to slot in an extra movie that will be out soon, even though he was already busy making the big budget sci-fi movie, Ready Player One.

That extra film is The Post, but despite the fact it seemed to come together very quickly, Spielberg still managed to pull together an impressive cast, including Tom Hanks, Meryl Streep, Sarah Paulson, Bob Odenkirk, Tracy Letts, Bradley Whitford, Bruce Greenwood, Matthew Rhys and Alison Brie.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘In June 1971 The New York Times, the Washington Post and the nation’s major newspapers took a brave stand for freedom of speech and reported on the Pentagon Papers, the massive cover-up of government secrets that spanned four decades and four US Presidents.

‘At the time, the Post’s Katherine Graham (Streep) was still finding her footing as the country’s first female newspaper publisher, and Ben Bradlee (Hanks), the paper’s volatile, driven editor, was trying to enhance the stature of the struggling, local paper. Together, the two formed an unlikely team, as they were forced to come together and make the bold decision to support The New York Times and fight the Nixon Administration’s unprecedented attempt to restrict the first amendment.’

The Post will be released in UK Cinemas on January 19th, 2018. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

Sarah Paulson, Matthew Rhys & More Join Steven Spielberg’s Pentagon Papers Film

June 6, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Back in March news emerged not just that Steven Spielberg was working on a film about the Pentagon Papers, but that he’d already got Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks onboard to star. Now the director has been filling out the acting ensemble, as Variety reports that Sarah Paulson, Bob Odenkirk, Matthew Rhys, Bradley Whitford, Carrie Coon, Jesse Plemons, David Cross, Alison Brie, Bruce Greenwood, Tracy Letts, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Zach Woods have all signed onto the movie. There’s no news on the exact roles they’ll play.

The movie will be based on Liz Hannah’s spec script, which recently landed one of the top spots on the Black List of the best unproduced screenplays. It’s ‘a drama about the Washington Post’s role in exposing the Pentagon Papers in 1971, and how the Post’s editor Ben Bradlee and publisher Kay Graham challenged the federal government over their right to publish them.’

The Pentagon Papers were a Top Secret report commissioned to look at what was happening in the Vietnam War. It spoke of a dramatic escalation that was being hidden from the public, and much of its information seemed to support the growing idea that the war was unwinnable. After it was leaked to the Washington Post, the newspaper ended up in a legal battle with the government over whether they could publish more of what they’d learned from the report.

At a time when the current US President is at war with the media and angry about leaks, this look at freedom of the press, the First Amendment and government lies could end up being extremely timely. To ensure the film can properly address current events, the film is on an accelerated production schedule so that it can get an Oscar qualifying run at the end of the year, before getting a wider release in early 2018.

June 20, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

alison-brieNow that Community has come to an end after years of will it-won’t it get cancelled, Alison Brie has time for other projects. Now she’s in talks to star in the comedy How To Be Single for New Line, according to Variety.

The film is based on a book by Liz Tuccillo novel, which ‘centers on a woman living in New York and searching for love.’

Marc Silverstein and Abby Kohn wrote the script, with Dana Fox working on the latest draft.

Working on both Community and Mad Men, Brie hasn’t had too much time for film, although she did recently voice a character in The Lego Movie. Perhaps this will be her first step into movie stardom.

The Lego Movie Trailer – Looking more fun than you might think

June 19, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The Lego Movie may not arrive in cinemas until next year, but you can understand why they want to release a trailer nice and early, as a lot of people will be wondering whether a film filled with little yellow Lego people can work. Well, on the evidence of this, it could be a lot of fun, and it all shows off the various franchises that will show up, including DC superheroes, NBA basketball teams and Ninja Turtles.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘The LEGO Movie follows Emmet, an ordinary, rules-following, perfectly average LEGO minifigure who is mistakenly identified as the most extraordinary person and the key to saving the world. Emmet (Chris Pratt) is drafted into a fellowship of strangers on an epic quest to stop an evil tyrant, a journey for which he is hopelessly and hilariously underprepared.

‘Will Ferrell, Morgan Freeman, Liam Neeson, Will Arnett, Elizabeth Banks, Nick Offerman and Alison Brie join Chris Pratt to form the cast of the first-ever full length theatrical LEGO movie, the greatest movie ever assembled, which is set to hit cinemas in 14th February 2014.’ [Read more…]

June 19, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Justin-ChatwinJustin Chatwin may have announced he’s leaving the US version of Shameless behind, but he’s not having a break, as Variety reports that Chatwin, Alison Brie and Colin Hanks have all signed up for the indie romantic comedy, No Stranger Than Love.

Brie is set to play ‘a high school art teacher in the small town. She is about to begin an affair with the married high school football coach, played by Hanks, who disappears down an inter-dimensional hole that opens up in her living room floor.’ There’s no info on exactly how Chatwin fits into this.

Nick Wernham is directing from a script by Steve Adams, with the film currently shooting in Toronto.

Somebody Up There Likes Me Promo Has Great Fun Telling Us Adam Scott Is A Dick

March 15, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

If you’re hoping to find out what Somebody Up There Likes Me is about from this NSFW promo, you’re out of luck. However it does tell us that Parks And Recreation’s Adam Scott is apparently a dick, while all you need for an independent film is pussy and weed. It’s very entertaining, so take a look. Bizarrely though, despite being in the promo, neither Adam Scott or Alison Brie is in the actual movie.

Rob Byington’s film is ‘A comedy about a man, his best friend, and the woman they both adore watching their lives fly by.’ It stars Nick Offerman, Keith Poulson, Jess Weixler and Megan Mullally amongst others.

It’s in US cinemas now, although no UK date is set yet.

Will Ferrell, Liam Neeson & Alison Brie Join LEGO movie

November 10, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The planned CGI LEGO movie is certainly pulling a great cast together, with the news that Will Ferrell, Liam Neeson, Alison Brie, and Nick Offerman have all signed up to voice roles in the film, according to Variety.

Will Arnett, Channing Tatum, Chris Pratt, Morgan Freeman, and Elizabeth Banks also star, with Arnett and Tatum particularly interesting, as they’ll be Superman and Batman, marking the first time the characters have appeared on screen together. The story is about Emmett (Pratt), a seemingly average Lego figure who is mistaken for a powerful man who can help save the universe. He joins a group determined to stop the evil President Business (Ferrell). Liam Neeson will play the villain’s right hand man, Bad Cop, with Alison Brie portraying a member of Emmett’s group. Nick Offerman will play a surly pirate, hell-bent on getting revenge on President Business.

And with a villain called President Business, we can already sense right wing nutjobs preparing to froth at the mouth about how this is trying to indoctrinate kids into hating capitalism.

Phil Lord and Chris Miller (21 Jump Street) are directing from a screenplay they co-wrote, based on an original story by Dan Hagerman and Kevin Hagerman. A release date of February 28th, 2014 is already set.

Emilia Clarke & Jessica Brown Findlay Eyed For Captain America 2

October 3, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Once production wraps on Thor 2 and Iron Man 3, they’re quickly moving on to Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Before then they need to get the new cast members sorted. Marvel and directors Joe Russo and Anthony Russo are currently eyeing their leading lady, with Deadline reporting numerous actresses are testing for the role.

On the shortlist is Emilia Clarke (who’s worked with the Russos on Game of Thrones), Jessica Brown Findlay (Downton Abbey), Imogen Poots (Fright Night) and Alison Brie (Community). The character they would be playing has not been announced, but it will be a modern day love interest for Steve Rogers. Some suggest the female lead will be somehow related to Peggy Carter, and it’s interesting that as with Hayley Atwell in the first film, they’re mainly looking at English actresses for the part.

It is also being reported that Scarlett Johansson will be making a cameo as Black Widow in the movie, ensuring the continuation of the broad Marvel Universe. Captain America: The Winter Soldier will be released April 4th, 2014.
