A Long Way Down (DVD Review)

July 28, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Pierce Brosnan, Imogen Poots, Aaron Paul, Toni Collette, Sam Neill
Director: Pascal Chaumeil
Running Time: 91 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: July 28th 2014 (UK)

If you’ve never read Nick Hornby’s book, A Long Way Down, I’d heartily recommend it. However most people who’ve read the novel will know it was always going to be tough to adapt it for the screen without making it seem trite or cheap. While not a complete disaster, unfortunately the movie version doesn’t completely overcome those issues.

On New Year’s Eve four strangers meet on a rooftop – disgraced broadcaster Martin (Pierce Brosnan), loud-mouthed politician’s daughter Jess (Imogen Poots), down-trodden mother Maureen (Toni Collette) and musician JJ (Aaron Paul). They’re all there to do the same thing – leap to their deaths. [Read more…]

Jimi: All Is By My Side Trailer – Andre Benjamin takes on a Jimi Hendrix biopic

July 4, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jimi-all-is-by-my-sideFor many years there’s been talk of a Jimi Hendrix biopic but various issues have stood in the way of getting a major one made. However those have been cleared away for Jimi: All Is By My Side, which sees André Benjamin, aka André 3000 of Outkast as the legendary musician.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘OutKast’s André Benjamin stars as Jimi Hendrix in this revealing biopic from Academy Award-winning writer-director John Ridley (12 Years A Slave). Covering a year in Hendrix’s life from 1966-67 as an unknown backup guitarist playing New York’s Cheetah Club to making his mark in London’s music scene up until his Monterey Pop triumph, the film presents an intimate portrait of the sensitive young musician on the verge of becoming a rock legend.’

Imogen Poots, Hayley Atwell and Burn Gorman also star. It’s due out in the UK in August. [Read more…]

That Awkward Moment (DVD Review)

June 1, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Zac Efron, Miles Teller, Michael B. Jordan, Imogen Poots
Director: Tom Gormican
Running Time: 91 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: June 2nd 2014 (UK)

Jason (Zac Efron) isn’t good with commitment. In fact he isn’t that good at knowing whether he’s dating someone or not, as they tend to emotionally break up with him when he just thinks they’re hooking up. His friend Mikey (Michael B. Jordan) is more settled down, with a wife, job and nice home.

Then Mikey discovers that his wife is cheating on him and suddenly he’s single. Jason and their third musketeer, Daniel (Miles Teller), vow to help him enjoy his newfound freedom, and they all agree to stay single and have some fun. Inevitably though (as this is a movie) Jason almost immediately meets Ellie (Imogen Poots), and after getting over an initial mistake where he thinks she’s a hooker, they start seeing each other. Daniel also has a new beau in the form of the rather posh Chelsea (Mackenzie Davis). [Read more…]

Patrick Wilson Will Be The Blunderer, Alongside Jessica Biel, Imogen Poots, & Toby Jones

May 9, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

patrick-wilson-shirtless-slideA very talented cast is coming together for The Blunderer, with Deadline reporting that Patrick Wilson, Jessica Biel, Imogen Poots, and Toby Jones have signed on to star (and yes, I do include Biel in the talented group, as she’s actually far better than most of the roles she’s given).

Based Patricia Highsmith’s 1960s set novel the story follows Walter Stackhouse (Wilson), who is a successful architect with a lovely wife (Biel).

Underneath his seemingly normal, perfect life, he is obsessed with an unsolved murder case, which spirals out of control as he faces both a deadly killer (Jones) and an ambitious detective, all while lusting for another woman (Poots).

Andy Goddard is set to directing from screenplay by Susan Boyd. The film will be looking for buyers at Cannes.

Filth (Blu-ray)

February 10, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: James McAvoy, Jamie Bell, Imogen Poots, Joanne Frogatt, Emun Elliot
Director: Jon S. Baird
Running Time: 97 mins
Certificate: 18
Release Date: February 10th 2014

Here’s my theory about Filth – it’s a gay movie that doesn’t look like one. Indeed on a cursory glance you’d be more likely to view it as a homophobic and potentially transphobic film. However deeper down there’s more LGBT interest than it might first appear.

James McAvoy plays Edinburgh policeman Bruce Robertson, a real shit of a man who’s racist, homophobic, takes drugs, drinks too much, has sex with any woman who will have him and thinks nothing of destroying other people. He makes lewd, anonymous phone call to his friend Bladesey’s wife, while being a bit of a playground bully to the man himself – despite the fact they are supposedly best friends. [Read more…]

That Awkward Moment (Cinema)

January 29, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Zac Efron, Miles Teller, Imogen Poots, Michael B. Jordan, Addison Timlin
Director: Tom Gormican
Running Time: 94 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: January 29th 2013

Zac Efron is branching out from his heartthrob image and is now in the more adult, blokey phase of his career. To be fair, it’s a part that fits him pretty well, and That Awkward Moment, while clearly a vehicle for his talents, has plenty more going for it than just him. It’s bawdy, funny, charming and easy to watch, and gets to the point pretty economically. It’s only real weakness is the casting of Imogen Poots, but more of her later.

Efron is Jason, a book cover designer who is enjoying the life of a single man in New York. When his pal Mikey (Michel B. Jordan) announces he is divorcing his wife (Jessica Lucas) he, Jason and Daniel (Miles Teller) form a pact, to remain single to help each other out in bars, keep each other company and always be there for each other. A Long Way Down Trailer – Aaron Paul & Pierce Brosnan contemplate suicide

January 27, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s almost a year a half since filming started on A Long Way Down and we got the first image. It’s only now that we’re getting a trailer for the adaptation of Nick Hornby’s excellent book, even though when it went into production there was talk of having it ready for an early 2013 release.

The film starts on New Year’s Eve on the top of a London skyscraper. Martin (Pierce Brosnan) is literally on the edge. A once-beloved TV personality, he’s now desperate to jump. But he’s not alone. Single mother Maureen, (Toni Collette), sassy teen Jess (Imogen Poots), and failed musician turned pizza-delivery boy JJ (Aaron Paul), have all turned up on the same roof with the same plan. Instead of jumping, these four strangers make a pact to stay alive and stay together until Valentine’s Day at least. The movie then follows this group of unlikely friends as they try to pull back from the brink.

Sam Neill also stars in a film that may have a depressing sounding synopsis, but if it’s anything like the book will be unexpectedly rewarding. It’s out in March in the UK but is still awaiting a US release dates. [Read more…]

Four New That Awkward Moment Posters Featuring Zac Efron, Miles Teller & More

November 25, 2013 By Tim Isaac 2 Comments

that-awkward-moment-poster2
The red band trailer for That Awkward Moment featured Zac Efron’s butt and him wearing a dildo, so it’s perhaps a bit of a surprise that he’s holding a cat in his new poster for the movie, which makes everything seem a lot more innocent.

He’s not the only one who’s got one, as there are character posters for Miles Teller, Michael B. Jordan and Imogen Poots have got one too.

Previously titled Are We Officially Dating?, That Awkward Moment is about a groups of Manhattan friends (Zac Efron, Miles Teller, Michael B. Jordan) who initially make a pact to remain single. The plot thickens when each friend falls in love shortly after the vow is made (wouldn’t you just know it!), and have to decide “So…where is this going?”.

The movie is due out at the end of January.

New Need For Speed Trailer – Revving things up with Aaron Paul

November 18, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

When DreamWorks announced they were making a movie version of the videogame Need For Speed, it sounded like they were trying to cash in on the Fast & Furious audience, and that certainly seems to be true from the evidence of this first trailer. That doesn’t mean it won’t be worth a look though!

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Fresh from prison, framed for a crime he didn’t commit, street racer Tobey Marshall (Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul), is hell bent on settling the score.

‘With revenge at the forefront of his mind, he gears up for the ultimate cross-country race heaving with adrenaline-charged muscle machines and high-octane super cars.
