September 13, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Now the British actress has got another major boost, as Steven Spielberg has cast her as the female lead in his played Ready Player One, according to THR.

Bridge Of Spies Trailer – Spielberg takes on the Cold War with Tom Hanks

June 7, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

bridge-of-spies-poster1Steven Spielberg is getting serious once more, this time reteaming with Tom Hanks to take on a tale of the Cold War and the precarious situation between the US and Russia in the 1960s.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘A dramatic thriller set against the backdrop of a series of historic events, DreamWorks Pictures/Fox 2000 Pictures’ “Bridge of Spies” tells the story of James Donovan, a Brooklyn lawyer who finds himself thrust into the center of the Cold War when the CIA sends him on the near-impossible task to negotiate the release of a captured American U-2 pilot. Screenwriters Matt Charman and Ethan Coen & Joel Coen have woven this remarkable experience in Donovan’s life into a story inspired by true events that captures the essence of a man who risked everything and vividly brings his personal journey to life.

‘Directed by three-time Academy Award®-winning director Steven Spielberg, “Bridge of Spies” stars: two-time Academy Award winner Tom Hanks as James Donovan; three-time Tony Award® winner Mark Rylance as Rudolf Abel, a KGB agent defended by Donovan; Scott Shepherd as CIA operative Hoffman; Academy Award nominee Amy Ryan as James’ wife, Mary; Sebastian Koch as East German lawyer Vogel; and Academy Award nominee Alan Alda as Thomas Watters, a partner at Donovan’s law firm. The film is produced by Spielberg, Marc Platt and Kristie Macosko Krieger with Adam Somner, Daniel Lupi, Jeff Skoll and Jonathan King serving as executive producers. The screenplay is by Matt Charman and three-time Academy Award winners Ethan Coen & Joel Coen.’

The movie will be in cinemas this autumn. [Read more…]

Steven Spielberg Will Head Into The Virtual World Of Ready Player One

March 25, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

steven-spielbergSpielberg has talked about making big action/fantasy films for the past few films but has only actually helmed more serious fare such as Lincoln and the upcoming Bridge Of Spies, however he’s going much more populist with his next two movies. He’s set to shoot The BFG later this year and now Deadline reports he’s boarded the action sci-fi Ready Player One.

The movie will be based on Ernie Cline novel. Here’s the synopsis: ‘In the year 2044, reality is an ugly place. The only time teenage Wade Watts really feels alive is when he’s jacked into the virtual utopia known as the OASIS. Wade’s devoted his life to studying the puzzles hidden within this world’s digital confines—puzzles that are based on their creator’s obsession with the pop culture of decades past and that promise massive power and fortune to whoever can unlock them. But when Wade stumbles upon the first clue, he finds himself beset by players willing to kill to take this ultimate prize. The race is on, and if Wade’s going to survive, he’ll have to win—and confront the real world he’s always been so desperate to escape.’

Ever since the novel was published there’s been excitement about the idea of a film version, but what people liked about that idea is also what many thought meant it would never happen – the world Wade enters is full of reference to real world old movies and video games. While you can talk about those things in a novel, it becomes much trickier to include in a film, as all sorts of people own the rights to the characters.

However if one man can wade through that quagmire it’s Spielberg. Indeed it would be possible to write a script purely filled with movies Steven has had a hand in – from Jurassic Park to Back To The Future – and it would feel like a pretty comprehensive trip through the pop culture of the past 35 years. In fact some have argued that it was nostalgia for the Spielbergian films of the 1980s that inspired many of the ideas in the novel.

It’s certainly an exciting idea, so let’s hope it comes to fruition.

Steven Spielberg & Jennifer Lawrence Team For War Photographer Memoir It’s What I Do

March 4, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jennifer-lawrenceSteven Spielberg & Jennifer Lawrence seem like a bit of a dream team, and now it’s happening as Deadline reports that they’re getting together for It’s What I Do, based on the memoir by Lynsey Addario.

Warner Bros. picked up the rights for the due following a whirlwind auction that saw numerous studios and production companies in the mix – many of which had other hot actresses attached. Working Title wanted it for Reese Witherspoon, Darren Aronofsky & Natalie Portman were circling, and Margot Robbie was after it too, while The Weinstein Company was bidding for George Clooney and Grant Heslov. Addario herself met with all the interested parties before Warners, Spielberg and Lawrence landed it.

The subject ‘is a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist who went to Afghanistan during the post-9/11 invasion of Afghanistan and carved out a niche giving an identity to the victims of conflict. That includes how Afghans suffered during the Taliban regime, the Iraqi War, victims of genocide in Darfur, the rape of women in the Congo. Her work in dangerous locales included her being kidnapped by pro-Quaddafi forces in the Libyan civil war.’

It’s not clear when the movie might shoot.

Spielberg’s BFG Gets Its Giant In The Form Of The Acclaimed Mark Rylance

October 27, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

mark-rylanceThere are few actors in the world as respected as Mark Rylance, but due to the fact he’s mainly been acclaimed on the stage – winning three Tony Awards and two Olivier Awards in the process – there are still plenty of people who have no idea what he looks like. Now though he’s taken a huge role in a major movie, although it’s still to be seen whether he’ll properly look like himself or get covered in CG.

Deadline reports he’s set to play the giant in Steven Spielberg’s upcoming movie version of Roald Dahl’s classic The BFG (Big Friendly Giant). The book concerns a young girl, the Queen of England and a benevolent giant known as the BFG. The three set out on an adventure to capture the evil, man-eating giants who have been invading the human world. There have been suggestions the film will somewhat change the story but the core will remain the same.

Spielberg comments, “As I witnessed on stage, Mark Rylance is a transformational actor. I am excited and thrilled that Mark will be making this journey with us to Giant Country. Everything about his career so far is about making the courageous choice and I’m honored he has chosen The BFG as his next big screen performance.”

Dahl’s grandson, Luke Kelly, adds, “We are ecstatic at this choice. Mark is incredibly talented, one of the great British actors working today. I’ve had the privilege of seeing Mark perform, and the thought of watching him transform into ‘the only nice and jumbly Giant in Giant Country’ is, as The BFG himself might say, absolutely phizz-whizzing.”

Rylance already has a role in Spielberg’s upcoming Untitled Cold War Thriller, which stars Tom Hanks. The BFG shoots next year with a July 1st, 2016 release date set.
