A Sequel Series To The L Word Is Officially In Development

July 11, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

There have been rumours for a few months that some sort of return to the world of The L Word might be in the works. Now it’s official, as it’s been revealed that the US cable network Showtime is backing a sequel to the original show.

The L Word ran from 2004 to 2009, gaining a legion of fans who followed the live of a group of LGBT women in LA, as well as their friends and family. Some of those beloved characters will return for the new run, as Jennifer Beals (Bette), Kate Moennig (Shane) and Leisha Hailey (Alice) are all onboard both to star and executive produce.

Other than them, it appears the revived series will mainly revolve around new characters, although THR says that Erin Daniels (Dana), Laurel Holloman (Tina), Mia Kirshner (Jenny), Sarah Shahi (Carmen) and Pam Grier (Kit) may appear in some form.

Ilene Chaiken, who created the show, is involved as an executive producer, but Showtime is currently looking for a showrunner and writer to take control of the new show. They are apparently hoping to find someone with ties to the lesbian community, who will be able to ensure the new L Word properly reflects the changes that have taken place for LGBT people in the 13 years since the show first started airing.

The L Word was US TV’s first drama centred around lesbians. Over the course of its six seasons it included ‘storylines about equality, legal marriage and benefits, and HIV/AIDS, as well as a transgender storyline that saw Daniela Sea’s Moira transition to Max in an era well before Amazon’s breakout Transparent’. It’s not known when the sequel show will hit screens.

Jurassic World 2 Gets Its Official Title & A Poster

June 22, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Ever since it was announced, we’ve known that Jurassic World 2 probably wouldn’t reach cinemas with that name. Now we know what it will be – with shooting coming to an end, its been revealed the film will be known as Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.

Alongside the title reveal, the first poster has been released, which you can see above.

There’s still very little info on the exact plot, although the title suggests that there will still be major problems with the Park (we do know the film is returning to Isla Nublar, the original Jurassic Park/World island). Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard will once more be having dinosaur troubles, with Jeff Goldblum’s Ian Malcolm also returning to the franchise.

J.A. Bayona directs, with a June 2018 release date set.

God’s Own Country Trailer – Take a look at the acclaimed gay-themed British drama

June 20, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

On its Sundance debut, God’s Own Country was met with huge amounts of praise, with director Francis Lee picking up the World Cinema – Dramatic Directing award. Some have even suggested it has the potential for Brokeback style crossover success.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Johnny Saxby works long hours in brutal isolation on his family’s remote farm in the north of England. He numbs the daily frustration of his lonely existence with nightly binge-drinking at the local pub and casual sex. When a handsome Romanian migrant worker arrives to take up temporary work on the family farm, Johnny suddenly finds himself having to deal with emotions he has never felt before. An intense relationship forms between the two which could change Johnny’s life forever.’

The movie opens the Edinburgh Film Festival on 21st June and will also open LA’s Outfest on July 6th. It’ll be in UK cinemas on September 1st. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

Anything Clip – First look at the controversial film starring Matt Bomer as a transgender sex worker

June 13, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

When it first became widely known that Matt Bomer was playing a trangender sex worker in the upcoming movie Anything, there was an immediate controversy. Many were angry that yet again a cisgender person was playing a transgender role, and there was also frustration that yet again that trans person was going to be involved in sex work.

The film is now preparing for its premiere this weekend in the LA Muse section of the Los Angeles Film Festival. Ahead of that the first clip from the movie has arrived, debuting over at Deadline.

The film is about, ‘Early Landry (John Carroll Lynch), who after losing his wife is forced to move to Los Angeles so he can be cared for by his over-protective sister (Maura Tierney), but escapes her clutches to start a new life in Hollywood. He quickly becomes enamored by his neighbor, Freda (Matt Bomer). His loneliness and need for companionship opens his heart to a remarkable new relationship, but their growing affection must be reconciled with the complexity of their disparate backgrounds.’

Marc Ruffalo, who executive produced the film, has defended Bomer’s casting, although its yet to be seen whether a wider audience will be prepared to look past the issues that have been highlighted. It’ll be interesting to see the first reviews following its premiere on Saturday at 3 PM at the Arclight Cinema in Santa Monica. Take a look at the first clip below. [Read more…]

Mary Poppins Returns (In The Form Of Emily Blunt) In Some New Pics From The Sequel

June 7, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

There are as many people who seem to be excited about a new Mary Poppins movie as there are people who think the whole thing is sacrilege. Indeed, it’s probably the movie in Disney’s new age of new takes on their classics that’s caused the most comment.

A new set of pics from the movie have now arrived, via EW, which suggest that Rob Marshall’s new Poppins will be both the same and different to the legendary 1964 movie. And part of that difference is that the setting has jumped forawrd a few decades.

EW also has the best description yet of what the movie is going to be about, saying, ‘Mary Poppins Returns, directed by Rob Marshall (Into the Woods), picks up 25 years after the events of the first film, fast-forwarding to London’s mid-1930s economic slump, the actual time period of Travers’ books. Number 17 Cherry Tree Lane has become the warm, loving home that banker and artist Michael Banks (Ben Whishaw) shares with his wife and three children. But after the sudden death of Michael’s wife, the Banks family is shattered — even enthusiastic aunt Jane (Emily Mortimer), now a fervent union organizer, and long-time housemaid Ellen (Julie Walters) can’t help lift spirits — and so in time, the once-blossoming home is on the verge of foreclosure.

Cue the arrival of prim and peculiar Mary Poppins (Emily Blunt), who leads Michael’s wayward children (and Jane and Michael themselves) on a series of unbelievable adventures — to the top of Big Ben, the bottom of the ocean, into magical encounters with animated dancing penguins and upside-down cousins (hey, Meryl Streep!). If anyone can help this family find the light they’ve lost, it’s Mary Poppins.’

Mary Poppins Returns will once more be a musical, with new tunes from Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman (Hairspray, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory the Musical). It’ll be in cinemas in December 2018.

Take a look at the new pics below. [Read more…]

May 28, 2017 By Joseph Baneth Allen 1 Comment

Big Bang Theory’s Jim Parsons Has Married Boyfriend Todd Spiewak

May 15, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Long before Jim Parsons became famous playing Sheldon in The Big Bangs Theory, he was dating Todd Spiewak. The couple have been together for 14 years. Now they’ve decided to take the next step, as they have tied the knot and gotten married.

The duo walked down the aisle at the Rainbow Room in New York City on Saturday evening, for a ceremony attended by friends and family.

Jim and Todd started dating back in 2002. After finding success with The Big Bang Theory, Parsons spent some time neither being in nor out. As he said in an interview last year, “I took Todd along to the first award shows, as my date, and what happened? Absolutely nothing. And afterwards, nobody ever asked me: ‘Are you gay?'”

It was only in 2012 that someone finally asked the question and Parson casually confirmed he was gay and in a long-term relationship. Now he’s a married man, and continues to be one of the higest paid actors on TV, with at least two more seasons of The Big Bang Theory to come.

Take a look at a few pics from the wedding below. (The Tom Ford tuxes they sported at the reception are particularly fab). [Read more…]

Star Wars Boss Kathleen Kennedy Isn’t Ruling Out A Romance Between Poe & Finn

April 27, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

When The Force Awakens was released, more than a few people noticed that John Boyega’s Finn and Oscar Isaac’s Poe Dameron seemed to like each other a lot, to the point where many wondered if the film was suggesting some sort of romance between them. It even got the point where the actors were joking about it and you couldn’t tell if they thought their characters might have a romantic future together or not.

However, it turns out it’s not just fans who’ve been wondering whether the duo might end up as an item, because so have those in charge of the franchise as Lucasfilm. Kathleen Kennedy, who runs the company, was asked about the possibility of Poe and Finn properly falling in love.

She replied, “We’ve talked about it, but I think you’re not going to see it in The Last Jedi.”

Of course, that doesn’t mean we’ll see it in any of the other movies either, but it’s nice to know they’re taking it seriously as a possibility. And from what Kennedy said next, it appears they’d never thought about Finn and Poe having a romantic connection until fans pointed it out.

She says, “In the next six or eight months we will have some meetings about the stories that we will develop next. After 40 years of adventures, people have a lot of information and a lot of theories about the path these stories can take, and sometimes those theories that come up are new ideas for us to listen to, read and pay attention to.”

Although some may think this is a form of queerbaiting, hopefully it means Kennedy and others are taking the idea of LGBT characters in the Star Wars universe seriously, and whether it’s Poe and Finn or not, that they will arrive in the movies soon. (H/T GSN)

Jude Law Will Take On A Young (& Gay) Dumbledore In Fantastic Beasts Sequel

April 12, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s been suggested that over the course of the five planned Fantastic Beasts movies, the focus will move away from Eddie Redmayne’s Newt Scamander and towards a young Albus Dumbledore. That makes sense, as from the Harry Potter books we know it’s Dumbledore who took on the evil Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp) in a climactic battle in 1945.

Now we know who will play the future Hogwarts headmaster, as Warner Brothers has announced that Jude Law will take on the role. As the studio notes about Dumbledore in the announcement, in Fantastic Beasts 2, ‘We meet him decades earlier, when Dumbledore is still serving as the wizarding school’s Transfiguration professor.  He is also a contemporary of Gellert Grindelwald, the charismatic dark wizard who believes wizards are superior to Muggles and No-Majs.’

Of course, JK Rowling has also revealed Dumbledore is gay, and there were hints in the Potter books that his early friendship with Grindelwald wasn’t purely platonic, before they fell out following the death of Albus’ sister. What’s not known is whether Dumbledore’s sexuality will come into play in the Fantastic Beasts films. However, Rowling has suggested he may be acknowleged as gay in the movies, saying in an interview, ‘As far as his sexuality is concerned… Watch this space.’

Director David Yates comments on the casting, “Jude Law is a phenomenally talented actor whose work I have long admired, and I’m looking forward to finally having the opportunity to work with him.  I know he will brilliantly capture all the unexpected facets of Albus Dumbledore as J.K. Rowling reveals this very different time in his life.”

The sequel is set for release on November 16th, 2018.

Beauty & The Beast (IMAX Review) – Is there something gay there that wasn’t there before?

March 17, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Dan Stevens, Emma Watson, Josh Gad, Kevin Kline, Luke Evans
Director: Bill Condon
Running Time: 129 mins
Certificate: PG
Release Date: March 17th 2017 (UK)

If it ain’t broke don’t fix it. That seems to have been the watchword with Beauty & The Beast. While there has been some tinkering around the edges of the 1991 animated classic to give everyone a bit more of a backstory, and to slightly soften some of the creepier Stockholm Syndrome elements, largely this live-action version is incredibly faithful. That goes as far as parts of the film being pretty much a shot-for-shot remake.

Inevitably, this will have some crying foul, seeing this as a cynical attempt by Disney to churn out another money-grabbing live-action take on one of their best films. Well, the fact is – yes, it is. But do you know what? I don’t care. [Read more…]
