This Is Drag Trailer – Bianca Del Rio, Adore Delano & more give an intimate look at life in drag

January 1, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

this-is-dragIn the last few years drag queens have never been as visible or more divisive. They are attacked by certain parts of the trans* community, as well as gay men who feel they belong to a past era when gay visibility was largely trapped in the camper end of the spectrum.

Nevertheless, there’s been a resurgence in interest in the artform, with many performers finding success and taking drag to new places that range from the arch and acerbic to full-on performance art. Indeed, despite the fact some don’t like them, drag artists have become one of the most interesting and challenging parts of the LGBT community, in a very post-modern way.

This Is Drag is a 60-minute Canadian documentary which takes ‘an intimate, behind-the-scenes look at performance, glamor, fame, family, love and sacrifice as some of the world’s most renowned drag queens come together for World Pride in Toronto. Starring Bianca Del Rio, Adore Delano, Courtney Act, Darienne Lake, Alyssa Edwards, Shangela.’

The trailer for the doc has been released and you can take a look at it below. [Read more…]

Old Dogs & New Tricks – Season 3, Episode 8 – The season wraps up with ‘Homo For The Holidays’

December 31, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

old-dogs-s3-ep8After a whole host of new adventures released over the last few weeks, the third season of Old Dogs & New Tricks comes to an end with its final episode, ‘Homo For The Holidays’. As the titles suggests, it’s set on Christmas day.

Nathan (Leon Acord) is in a bit of a crisis. With his former lover holding out an olive branch, and having had an ill-judged and humiliating hookup with a young bartender, what is he going to tell new love Jake (Curtis Wayne Brown)? Meanwhile Muscles (Jeffrey Patrick Olson) spends Christmas with his parent, Ross (David Pevsner) is hoping for a quiet time with Dan (Jeffrey Scott Basham) but things get disrupted, and Brad (Curt Bonnem) has hit rock bottom but may have a chance at redemption.

Of course there’s also time for a big cliffhanger.

While that would suggest we’ll be getting more Old Dogs in the future, that’s yet to be confirmed. Creator Leon Acord says he can’t comment yet on whether there’ll be a Season 4, but he hopes to make an announcement soon.

Brokeback Mountain Author Annie Proulx Now Wishes She Could Quit Her Creation

December 30, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

brokeback-mountainWriters tend to be split into two camps – those who don’t mind others taking their creations and spinning them into their own fantasies and ideas in whatever direction they wish (within limits), and those who are very protective and get frustrated by other people’s ‘incorrect’ interpretations and extrapolations.

It appears Brokeback Mountain author Annie Proulx is one of the latter, as in a recent interview she’s suggested she wishes she’d never written the story, due to how obsessives fans have reacted to it, particularly since her acclaimed short story was turned into a movie.

Talking to Paris Review, she says, ‘I wish I’d never written the story. It’s just been the cause of hassle and problems and irritation since the film came out. Before the film it was all right… In Wyoming they won’t read it. A large section of the population is still outraged. But that’s not where the problem was. I’m used to that response from people here, who generally do not like the way I write. But the problem has come since the film. So many people have completely misunderstood the story. I think it’s important to leave spaces in a story for readers to fill in from their own experience, but unfortunately the audience that “Brokeback” reached most strongly have powerful fantasy lives. And one of the reasons we keep the gates locked here is that a lot of men have decided that the story should have had a happy ending. They can’t bear the way it ends—they just can’t stand it. So they rewrite the story, including all kinds of boyfriends and new lovers and so forth after Jack is killed. And it just drives me wild. They can’t understand that the story isn’t about Jack and Ennis. It’s about homophobia; it’s about a social situation; it’s about a place and a particular mindset and morality. They just don’t get it. I can’t tell you how many of these things have been sent to me as though they’re expecting me to say, Oh great, if only I’d had the sense to write it that way. And they all begin the same way—I’m not gay, but . . . The implication is that because they’re men they understand much better than I how these people would have behaved. And maybe they do. But that’s not the story I wrote. Those are not their characters. The characters belong to me by law.’

You would think a writer would be happy their work has had such a profound effect of their audience, but for Proulx there’s obviously more to it than that. If you read the entire interview though, Proulx does come across as rather crochety and, to be honest, a little snobby, so perhaps it’s understandable that she doesn’t like others to interpret her work too much.

Big Gay Picture Show’s Top 10 LGBT- Themed Films Of 2014

December 29, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

top-10-lgbt-films-2014There is a lot of good work going on in the world of LGBT film (and to be honest, a lot of rubbish too), but due to the fact it’s a bit of a niche area, far fewer people are aware of it than there ought to be. So in an effort to help shine a light of those movies that anyone interested in queer cinema really ought to check out, we’ve put together this Top 10 of 2014’s LGBT-themed movies.

To be in for consideration, BGPS  needed to have reviewed the movie over the last 12 months. It should also be noted it’s not based purely on the score out of 10 we gave the movie at the time of the review, but also how we view it in hindsight and whether it’s stuck with us over the months. So take a look below to see what we think is the best of 2014. [Read more…]

Lesbian Themed Confidential, From The Director Of Loving Annabelle, Seeks Funding

December 24, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

confidential-kickstarterKatherine Brooks had a great success a few years ago with Loving Annabelle, which found plenty of fans and won awards at both mainstream and LGBT film festivals, as well as becoming one of the highest grossing gay-themed films of all time. Now she’s returning with Confidential, which for the next couple of days is hoping to reach its extended $120,000 goal on Kickstarter.

People You Know Season 1 Part 1 – The LGBT-friendly web series goes free, but just for Christmas

December 23, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

people-you-know-pilotBack in June, we posted the Pilot Episode of the web series People you Know, but if you wanted the rest of Season 1, Part 1, you had to pay. However as a bit of a festive gift – and for a very limited time – the other episode now available for free on the series’ webpage during the Christmas holidays. It’s only due to stay free for the next few days, so you’ll need to watch now!

Here’s the synopsis: ‘People You Know tackles the story of having it all in the most iconic, demanding and cutthroat city in the world, New York City. People you Know is a provocative series where the seven deadly sins corrupt a group of thirty-something urbanites, threatening their chance for happiness and love, as they strive to achieve their dreams while surviving the drama. At every turn, these friends get pushed to the limit and run the risk of losing all they hold dear.

Pandora Boxx, an alum of RuPaul’s Drag Race who was named by Entertainment Weekly “as their America’s Next Drag Superstar,” plays Adora Jarr, a twisted bartending version of herself. She has performed around the world first with the sold out Off-Broadway comedy show Lick this Boxx and debuted a new comedy show Missed Connections in New York City in September.

Steve Hayes plays Patrick Carter and is a three-time MAC award winner and veteran of NY stage. He is best remembered for his performances in the films Trick and Big Gay Musical. He also hosts his highly popular web show, Steve Hayes: Tired Old Queen at the Movies. Steve’s character is the master of sexual innuendo and always ready with a scandalous quip. He often acts as the voice of reason, even if he won’t listen to his own advice.’

“Each character has a moment in the season where they must decide if they are on the side of the saints or the sinners. The choices they make have a direct effect on everyone else, which makes it so much fun to watch,” says co-creator Baltimore Russell. “The thing that compels the characters to action is the same thing that might be also holding someone else back from achieving their dreams.”

“We see the characters love and scheme and fall victim to their own insecurities. It’s what really makes the show relatable,” says John Dylan DeLaTorre, co-creator. “Anyone can watch the show and find a character to identify with and then root for them to succeed. It’s that drama and intrigue that sets the show apart from other series.”

The current plan is to resume production of the final 7 episodes of season one in mid 2015.

All six episodes of season one, part one are currently available to view for free here.

Old Dogs & New Tricks Season 3 Episodes 6&7 – The boys are getting ready for a gay old Christmas

December 23, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

old-dog-s3-ep6Early in the new Season of Old Dogs & New Tricks the boys had their own Thanksgiving meal, so it shouldn’t be a surprise that it’s now time for an Old Dogs Christmas with episodes 6 and 7 – ‘Putting the X in X’mas’ and ‘All About Xmas Eve’

Things get potentially embarassing when Ross’ (David Pevsner) happy-ending massage, which was videotaped, is made public and has gone viral. Nathan (Leon Acord) leaps into action, and calls in “PR guru” Dan Karmel (Jeffrey Scott Basham) to handle the crisis.

However on a more Christmassy note, Brad (Curt Bonnem) puts the “ho” in “Ho Ho Ho!” when he tries out being a department store Santa Claus.

After all that Lydia (Amanda Gari) lures Nathan to a Christmas Eve cocktail with her and Andy (Andy Gates).  It’s a fun celebration, until Lydia & Andy leave. Afraid to be alone with his cellphone (and Damian’s number!), Nathan stays behind–and finds himself in the sites of a sexy, opportunistic bartender (Aaron Wimmer).

Is Nathan about to do something he’ll regret? Is Muscles leaving forever? Is Ross giving in to Dan’s advances? Is Brad at the end? All will (hopefully) be revealed when the Season finale premieres next week. [Read more…]
