Win A Signed Copy Of Prince Lestat – the eagerly anticipated new novel in the Vampire Chronicles series by Anne Rice

November 18, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

prince-lestat-book-coverThe Queen of the Undead is back, with her first Vampire Chronicle in over a decade – marking the return of one of the most popular vampires of all time: Lestat de Lioncourt. And we’ve got a hardback copy of the book to give away, signed by Anne Rice herself.

Anne Rice transformed the vampire genre, paving the way for the current vampire craze that has swept both the entertainment and publishing industries. Rice’s first book in The Vampire Chronicles series, Interview with the Vampire, was published almost 40 years ago and made into the Oscar-nominated film of the same name, starring Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt, with a screenplay by Rice, There are also currently a new set of films based on The Vampire Chronicles in the works, which should bring Lestat back to the screen in the next few years.

In Price Lestat the vampire world is in crisis – their kind has been proliferating out of control and, thanks to technologies undreamed of in previous centuries, they can communicate as never before. Roused from their earth-bound slumber, ancient ones are in thrall to the Voice: which commands that they burn fledgling vampires in cities from Paris to Mumbai, Hong Kong to Kyoto and San Francisco. Immolations, huge massacres, have commenced all over the world. Who – or what – is the Voice? What does it desire, and why?

There is only one vampire, only one blood drinker, truly known to the entire world of the Undead. Will the dazzling hero-wanderer, the dangerous rebel-outlaw Lestat heed the call to unite the Children of Darkness as they face this new twilight?

Anne Rice’s epic, luxuriant, fiercely ambitious new novel brings together all the worlds and beings of the legendary Vampire Chronicles, from present-day New York and Ancient Egypt to fourth-century Carthage and Renaissance Venice; from Louis de Pointe du Lac; Armand the eternally young; Mekare and Maharet; to Pandora and Flavius; David Talbot, vampire and ultimate fixer from the Secret Talamasca; and Marius, the true child of the Millennia. It also introduces many other seductive supernatural creatures, and heralds significant new blood.

For your chance to win the signed copy of the Prince Lestat novel that we’ve got to give away, answer the question below and fill in your details, then press submit! The competition closes on December 2nd 2014, so get answering and good luck! [Read more…]

Matthew Goode Defends The Lack Of Gay Sex In Alan Turing Biopic The Imitation Game

November 18, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

matthew-goode-imitation-gameThe Imitation Game has set off a fair amount of debate both about whether it’s a good movie – reviews have differed starkly on whether it’s brilliant or dreadful – and also on how it deals with Alan Turing’s sexuality.

The latter has become a particularly prominent issue as for many people the fact Turing was gay is a vital part of his story. Having been the brains behind deciphering German codes and helping shorten the Second World War by two years, a few years later he was prosecuted for being gay, forced to be chemically castrated (to avoid prison), shunned by the establishment and then he killed himself. It’s a powerful indictment of the homophobia and prejudice of the recent past, where people could be so blinded by bigotry that they’d destroy a man who could have given so much more to the human race.

However while the movie certainly acknowledges Turing’s sexuality, it is a little shy about the realities of that and what he actually had to deal with as a gay man in the UK in the 1940s and 1950s.

Benedict Cumberbatch has already defended the movie’s depiction of Turing’s sexuality, saying “There is no heterosexuality expressed in the film. So what we show in his behaviour is sadly true to his story. He had to suppress his sexuality, make it private, make it something secret.”

Now it’s fellow Imitation Game actor Matthew Goode’s turn to defend the movie and the lack of gay sex within it. Talking to Huffpo, he says, “Some people will think it’s a shame there was no suggestion or depiction of [the sex life of] Alan Turing, who is a gay icon because of what he went through and what happened in [1954] where he took his own life. But I think, in some ways, to do this man’s story [and include his sex life], it would do him a slight disservice because he was so private. No one at Bletchley Park knew that he was a homosexual, so therefore the film is merely mirroring what was going on in his own life. I know that may seem cowardly … but to show a scene of him having sex with another man without any knowledge or the truth in it, I think could have been very risky. I mean, there will always be a ‘you’re damned if you do and you’re damned if you don’t,’ but I’m really glad we didn’t.”

However what both Goode and Cumberbatch say slightly misses the point. Yes Turing was hidden and private – and many suggest he didn’t have huge amounts of sex anyway – but a vital part of his story is that he was forced to be that way, as evidenced by what happened when the authorities found out the truth. The film does somewhat address that, but there is still a shyness which it’s difficult not to interpret more as a concern about keeping the film palatable to a mainstream audience (particularly because it’s the sort of film that will attract an older audience) than about being fully true to Turing himself and the struggle he faced.

It’s also true that both actor seem to assume the only way to fully show Turing’s sexuality is with a full-on gay sex scenes, which wouldn’t really have been necessary, just a stronger sense that the mathematician and computing pioneer was gay in reality (and it was an intrinsic part of him) not just in theory.

You can watch Goode’s full Huffpo live chat about The Imitation Game below. [Read more…]

We’ve already had a trailer, but now it’s time to meet the girl’s individual emotions. You can take a look at them below.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From an adventurous balloon ride above the clouds to a monster-filled metropolis, Academy Award®-winning director Pete Docter (“Monsters, Inc.,” “Up”) has taken audiences to unique and imaginative places. In Disney•Pixar’s original movie “ Inside Out,” he will take us to the most extraordinary location of all—inside the mind.

Like all of us, Riley is guided by her emotions – Joy (Amy Poehler), Fear (Bill Hader), Anger (Lewis Black), Disgust (Mindy Kaling) and Sadness (Phyllis Smith). The emotions live in Headquarters, the control center inside Riley’s mind, where they help advise her through everyday life. As Riley and her emotions struggle to adjust to a new life in San Francisco, turmoil ensues in Headquarters. How To Train Your Dragon 2 (Blu-ray Review)

November 18, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Jay Baruchel, Gerard Butler, Cate Blanchett, Jonah Hill, Craig Ferguson
Director: Dean DeBlois
Running Time: 102 mins
Certificate: PG
Release Date: November 17th 2014 (UK)

Most of DreamWorks Animation’s output has been okay but nothing particularly special. They hit on something good with Shrek (and I personally love Prince Of Egypt), but with How To Train Your Dragon it seemed like they’d suddenly stepped up a gear, with great storytelling, a massive scale and genuine heart. However after that nearly everything they’ve made – from Turbo to Mr. Peabody & Sherman – has gone back to being rather rubbish. However with How To Train Your Dragon 2 they’ve made what is probably their best film yet.

It’s several years on from the first film and Hiccup is now older and has led a major change on the Viking island of Berk, where rather than fighting dragons they now befriend and ride them. However not every Viking is as enlightened as they are, after finding an ice cave that’s home to hundreds of new, wild dragons, Hiccup and his friends discover they’re under threat from a man called Drago, who’s determined to rule the dragons by force and if he does that he believes he can control the people too. Alaska Is A Drag LGBT-Themed Feature Film Seeks Funding

November 17, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

alaska-is-a-dragWe enjoyed the short film Alaska Is A Drag when it was released as part of the Boys On Film 11 collection of gay-themed shorts. Now following that release, screenings at 150 film festivals and winning numerous awards, the filmmakers behind it are hoping to expand Alaska Is A Drag into a feature film and they’ve turned to Kickstarter to help them do that.

The project is currently looking for $50,000 to help turn it into the movie.

The film version, which is due to star Martin L. Washington Jr. and Maya Washington, is described as, ‘darkly comic, achingly real story of LEO and his twin sister TRISTEN – who long to be International Superstars but instead they are wading up to their knees in fish guts.

‘Everyone who slices fish all day – daydreams. Leo’s daydreams are just a little more glamtastic than most. Their father GEORGE works on a fishing boat. So they are left alone to fend for themselves. Tristen taught Leo how to fight to survive – and unfortunately, Leo’s regular tormentor and former best friend KYLE gives him a lot of practice. After one particularly brutal fight, Leo is recruited by the local boxing coach DIEGO to train with him. A new kid who just moved to town — DECLAN — becomes Leo’s sparring partner — and this new triangle forces the twins to face the real reason they’re stuck in Alaska.

‘It’s a fish out of water story, like — Billy Elliot in reverse or Rocky in Drag. If Hedwig and Rocky had a love child that might best describe ALASKA IS A DRAG.

You can take a look at the trailer for the film below, and if you like what you see, head over to Kickstarter. [Read more…]

Paul Bettany Schools Anti-Gay Twitter Troll On Their Idiocy

November 17, 2014 By Tim Isaac 13 Comments

paul-bettanyThere are plenty of good things about being a Hollywood celeb, but there are also plenty of downsides, not least of which is the abuse you get just for existing and being a nexus for trolls to gather. Paul Bettany is not immune to trolls, but it turns out he does have a pretty epic way of dealing with them, as evidenced by a tweet he published a few days ago and which you can see below.

Despite the fact he’s married to Jennifer Connelly and has kids with her, it appears that news hasn’t reached everyone, including one person who sent him the disjointed message, ‘Your a faggot pussy I would beat your fucking ass if i ever see you in real life. Faggot.’

Not willing to let that stand, Bettany decided to fight back.

Bettany wrote, ‘Dear Travis, Thank you so much for your message. I have a few thoughts – I think you mean you’re as in you are a faggot pussy not ‘‘your’’, which seems to suggest I have a faggot pussy. Also a comma after “pussy” would really help the clarity of the sentence. Lastly, you are mixing up your tenses “would and see” – I think you mean that you would beat my fucking ass if you ever saw me in real life or you will beat my fucking ass (why so much focus on my ass? Something you’d like to get off your chest?) if you ever see me in real life. Sorry for all the notes but I was a little confused. Hugs and kisses, Paul Bettany.’

And with that the actor won the Internet, not just completely ignoring the idea that being called a ‘faggot’ is meant to be an insult, but showing just what sort of insecure morons many trolls are. [Read more…]

Colin Farrell Calls Out Ireland For The Fact His Gay Brother Had To Go Overseas To Marry

November 17, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

colin-farrell-eamon-farrellWhile an increasing number of European Countries have given full marriage equality to gay people, there’s no doubt that the change is coming slower in many of the nations where the Catholic Church still exerts a major influence (for example Italy still has no legal recognition of same sex couples at all).

Ireland has made massive steps forward in the last couple of decades (almost incredibly, homosexuality was only decriminalised there in 1993) and for the last couple of years it’s had civil partnerships (although these fall short of offering the same protections married couples gets). Marriage Equality is a very much as live issue in Ireland, and while polls suggest most of the population are in favour of the, the politicians are still nervous about enacting it so they’ve called a referendum on the issue for Spring 2015.

Colin Farrell has stepped up to show his support both for gay marriage and for his brother Eamon in an open letter he wrote for the Sunday World newspaper. Here’s what he had to say:

‘I think I found out my brother wasn’t grovelling in heterosexual mud like most boys our age when I was around 12. I remember feeling surprised. Intrigued. Curious. Not bi-curious before you start getting ideas.

‘I was curious because it was different from anything I’d known or heard of and yet it didn’t seem unnatural to me. I had no reference for the existence of homosexuality. I had seen, by that age, no gay couples together. I just knew my brother liked men and, I repeat, it didn’t seem unnatural to me. My brother Eamon didn’t choose to be gay. Yes, he chose to wear eyeliner to school and that probably wasn’t the most pragmatic response to the daily torture he experienced at the hands of school bullies.

‘But he was always proud of who he was. Proud and defiant and, of course, provocative. Even when others were casting him out with fists and ridicule and the laughter of pure loathsome derision, he maintained an integrity and dignity that flew in the face of the cruelty that befell him.

‘I don’t know where those bullies are now, the ones who beat him regularly. Maybe some of them have found peace and would rather forget their own part of a painful past. Maybe they’re sitting on bar stools and talking about “birds and faggots” and why one’s the cure and the other the disease.

‘But I do know where my brother is. He’s at home in Dublin living in peace and love with his husband of some years, Steven. They are about the healthiest and happiest couple I know. They had to travel a little farther than down the aisle to make their vows, though, to Canada, where their marriage was celebrated.

‘That’s why this is personal to me. The fact that my brother had to leave Ireland to have his dream of being married become real is insane. INSANE.

‘It’s time to right the scales of justice here. To sign up and register to vote next year so that each individual’s voice can be heard

‘How often do we get to make history in our lives? Not just personal history. Familial. Social. Communal. Global. The world will be watching. We will lead by example. Let’s lead toward light.’
