Hairspray Live Gets Rosie O’Donnell & Sean Hayes

August 5, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

sean-hayesUS TV Network NBC is busy readying its next live musical event, and this time they’re going for a pretty modern one, with a television event featuring Hairspray. The cast already includes Jennifer Hudson, Harvey Fierstein, Kristin Chenoweth, Ariana Grande, Martin Short, as well as newcomer Maddie Baillio in the central role of Tracy Turnblad.

Now a couple of more have joined the throng, with Rosie O’Donnell and Sean Hayes signing on to star, according to Variety. Hayes is set to be Mr. Pinky, owner of Mr. Pinky’s Hefty Hideaway, while O’Donnell will play the role of the gym teacher.

Hairspray follows teenager Tracy, who becomes part of a fight to integrate a local Baltimore dance TV show, which normally only allows black people on once a month, during ‘Negro Day’. Mr. Pinky arrives on the scene after Tracy becomes a dancer on the show, as he wants her to be the spokesperson for his shop.

The live event is scheduled to happen in December.

Jared Leto Says ‘A Gay Leading Man Wouldn’t Have The Same Opportunities As A Straight One’

August 5, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jared-leto-joker-slideWhile an increasing number of TV and smaller movie stars have come out in recent years, we’re yet to have an LGBT a-list actor. Many have suggested this isn’t a coincidence, and it appears Jared Leto agrees with them.

Talking to GQ, the Oscar-winning Suicide Squad star was asked if he thought America was ready to accept a gay leading man. “I think so,” said Leto, although after a little prodding he changed that to the less definite, “I hope so”.

There are reasons it’s only a hope, as he adds, “I definitely don’t think a gay leading man would have the same opportunities as a straight leading man. I don’t think that. Not for a single second. I don’t know if that’s offensive or not, but that’s my thought right now. It shouldn’t be that way. I don’t think you’ll have as many opportunities.”

He continued by suggest it was the same for minorities, adding, “What a word, ’minority,’. Have we taken that word off the list yet? ‘Cause it should be. Anyway, no, I think that this is still a very conservative business.”

Leto certainly isn’t the only person to think so. While individually most people in Hollywood are quite liberal, when it comes to business and the millions of dollars they’re throwing around, they tend to be far more timid and afraid of anything they think might affect the box office. That makes it far more difficult for gay actors to get major role, and also for mainstream populist movies about LGBT leads to get made, as the perception is it will knock the box office in conservative countries and amongst right wing homophobes. Hopefully that may change, especially if the upcoming The Flash, starring queer actor Ezra Miller, proves a hit.

First Look At Brad Pitt & Marion Cotillard In Robert Zemeckis’ Allied

August 5, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

allied-pitt-cotillardIt looks like World War II is getting a little suave in Robert Zemeckis’ Allied, as his stars, Brad Pitt & Marion Cotillard, are certainly looking good in this first image from the movie, which has arrived via People. Lizzy Caplan, Matthew Goode, and Jared Harris also star in the movie.

The film is a sweeping romantic thriller, with Pitt and Cotillard as ‘undercover allies who begin to develop a romantic relationship as they plan a high-profile assassination. Pitt plays a British intelligence officer sent to Casablanca on the mission while Cotillard plays a French Resistance fighter who poses as his wife.’ However, Cotillard may be a Nazi spy.

The film is getting an Oscar friendly release towards the end of the year.

Mr Robot’s Rami Malek Joins Charlie Hunnam In Papillon Remake

August 5, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

rami-malek-mr-robotThe 1973 classic Papillon is getting a remake, with Charlie Hunnam attaching himself a while back to the role originally played by Steve McQueen. Now we know who should be replacing Dustin Hoffman, as THR reports that Rami Malek has signed on for the movie.

The original is about ‘Henri “Papillon” Charriere (McQueen), who is unjustly convicted of murder in 1930s France and condemned to life in a notorious island prison. En route, Papillon meets a quirky convicted counterfeiter named Louis Dega (Hoffman). In exchange for protection, Dega agrees to finance Papillon’s prison escape, ultimately resulting in a lasting friendship.’

Michael Noer is set to direct the movie from a script Aaron Guzikowski (Prisoners). It’s not clear when it might start shooting.

Rebel Wilson Up For Gender-Swapped Remake Of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels

August 5, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

rebel-wilsonInternet trolls may have viciously laid into the idea of gender-swapping Ghostbusters, but Hollywood seems to like the idea, with a Splash remake announced a couple of days ago with Channing Tatum in the Darryl Hannah role. That’s been joined by Rebel Wilson taking on one of the central roles in a do-over of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.

THR reports that she’s play one of two con-women in the remake of the 1998 Steve Martin and Michael Caine comedy. The original saw the duo as con artists, one unsophisticated and one suave, who join forces on the French Riviera to take down a big target, before turning on one another with a bet that will see the loser having to leave town.

It’s not known who might join Wilson in the new version of the film. No director is set either, but it seems something Wilson is keen on, as she’s also set to produce.
