Documentary Playing Gay: How America Came Out on Television Seeks Your Funding

August 9, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

looking-s1-slideIn the last 20 year the visibility of gay characters on TV has increased massively, and it’s something the documentary Playing Gay: How America Came Out on Television wants to take a look at. But to do so it’s hoping to raise as extremely ambitious $137,500 on Kickstarter, and with only a week to go it’s still a long way off that target, so it really does need your help.

Playing Gay, ‘is a documentary film that needs the support of the LGBT community and its allies in order to be made. The film will tell — for the first time — the story of how television changed the way America views LGBT people.

‘There has been a major shift in the hearts and minds of America over the past four decades. Television has been both the catalyst for and a powerful reflection of Americans’ views on gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people.

‘We are lining up interviews with actors and directors who have played key roles in the history of LGBT people on TV. But in order to shoot and edit this film, we need you.’

You can find out more by taking a look at the video below and then heading over to Kickstarter. [Read more…]

Is It Defamatory To Say Jared Leto Has A Massive Penis?

August 9, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Jared-LetoOver the last few months pics have been doing the rounds of the Internet of Jared Leto grabbing his junk during a concert and revealing what looks to be an extremely large package. However it appears some lawyers working on his behalf would prefer if no one mentioned it (or perhaps it’s a genius piece of reverse psychology to get everyone to talk about).

Techdirt writes, “Paul Levy at Public Citizen alerts us to how a lawyer working for Lavely & Singer, Allison Hart, has sent a ridiculous cease & desist notice to the website Lipstick Alley on behalf of actor/musician Jared Leto because some people in Lipstick Alley’s forums made some comments about Leto in forums like this one and this one.”

Apparently the lawyers objected to comments both about the alleged size of Leto’s penis, as well as some potentially more troublesome ones speculating on rumours of his treatment of women during sexual encounters. So Lipstick Alley came up with a great response, which includes: ‘Having reviewed the posts that you have identified, I conclude that you do not have any non-frivolous defamation against any of the posters.

‘Some of the posts of which you object do not appear to me to be defamatory. Two of the posts simply mention claims found elsewhere in the Internet that your client has a large penis. It is hard to see how those statements would hurt your client’s reputation, even if they are false. It is, as I understand it, the accusation of having asmall penis that is understood to be an insult.

‘Other posts about Leto’s allegedly rough and inconsiderate behavior during alleged sexual encounters with fans, and about the age of one of the fans, might well have been defamatory when originally posted, assuming that they are false. I recognize that your letter claims that the statements are false. I assume that you do not have personal knowledge about the size of Leto’s penis or about whether he is rough with sexual partners, and you do not cite any evidence supporting your claim of falsity…

‘Moreover, none of the posters on Lipstick Alley claims to have personal knowledge about Leto’s conduct during sex with his fans (or about the size of his penis); some simply express their views about what they have read elsewhere, and some have reposted comments from other web sites that purport to reflect first-person descriptions of activities in which the original writers claim to have been involved. Your demand letter mentions that at least one of the linked-to posts has been deleted from the original site, and you seem to suggest that the removal of various posts in response to demand letters from your client supports your assertion that the posts are false. But at most, it only shows that the individuals whom your client threatened decided that the issue was not worth litigating. Lipstick Alley, however, stands up for the First Amendment right of its users to comment on celebrities, and to make those comments anonymously, unless their statements have been proved false and defamatory. It does not remove posts simply because a wealthy actor is able to hire a law firm to send threatening letters.’

So is it defamatory to talk about Leto’s allegedly large man bits? Perhaps a bit of picture evidence can do more than words (and we’d also suggest that if he doesn’t want people to notice and talk about it, grabbing your crotch on stage in front of thousands of people – and cameras – probably isn’t the best plan): [Read more…]

Henry Cavill Once ‘Had to Apologize Profusely’ After Getting A Sex Scene Boner

August 9, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

henry-cavillWhen actors talk about filming sex scenes they normally say that they’re awkward and not in the least erotic, with the whole thing being a largely technical exercise. Henbry Cavill seems to agree, but it also appears that on at least one occasion, while he brain wasn’t aroused, other parts of his anatomy disagreed.

Talking to Men’s Fitness (via TheWrap) about filming an intimate scene in the TV show The Tudors, he says, “It’s only happened to me once, and it was very embarrassing. A girl had to be on top of me, she had spectacular breasts, and I hadn’t rearranged my — stuff into a harmless position. She’s basically rubbing herself all over me and, um, it got a bit hard.”

I had to apologize profusely afterward.“It’s not great when you’re in a professional acting environment and somebody gets a boner, is it? No, not acceptable.”

He was keen to add though, “You don’t think of sex scenes as showing your bum to the nation. The very last thing it is is sexy. The actual physicality is very uncomfortable. All you’re doing is smacking your nuts against someone, and nothing is going in.”

Perhaps someone needs to introduce him to that old Hollywood male nudity mainstay, the cock sock. Although I can imagine there will now be a lot of people volunteering to film sex scenes with Henry.

Gay Short FIlm Showcase: Vagina Is the Warmest Color – A lesbian in a vagina costume has something to say

August 7, 2015 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

vaigna-is-the-warmest-colorAnyone who’s seen the extremely entertaining, Who’s Afraid Of Vagina Woolf will already be familiar with Anna Margarita Albelo giant vagina! In that movie Abelo’s wannabe filmmaker has ended up dancing around in a vagina costume rather than being the big-shot director she was hoping to be.

The short film Vagina Is The Warmest Color was made to help promote Who’s Afraid of Vagina Wolf?, and also to critique the Palme d’Or winning Blue Is the Warmest Color, a movie Abelo wasn’t that impressed with. As Buzzfeed points out, ‘She [Abelo] was thrilled to see a lesbian love story getting so much attention, but nonetheless disappointed that the object of all this attention was another film about lesbian misery. “That’s why at the end of Vagina, I say, ‘Fuck you.’”’

She also says she found the much talked about sex scenes in Blue Is The Warmest Color exploitive, and mirrored that which a much more unsual sex scene in her short film – which also involves the vaginal costume.

Take a look at the short below and then head over to Buzzfeed to find out a bit more.

The New Black Trailer – The African-American community grapples with gay rights in the face of equal marriage

August 7, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

new-black-documentaryAfter a successful run at festivals a couple of years ago, The New Black has now arrived on Netflix in the US, but if you want to see whether it’s a gay-themed documentary that’s worth a watch, you can take a look at the trailer below.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Directed by Yoruba Richen, THE NEW BLACK is a documentary that tells the story of how the African-American community is grappling with the gay rights issue in light of the gay marriage movement and the fight over civil rights. The film documents activists, families and clergy on both sides of the campaign to legalize gay marriage and examines homophobia in the black community’s institutional pillar—the black church and reveals the Christian right wing’s strategy of exploiting this phenomenon in order to pursue an anti-gay political agenda.  On June 26, 2015, in a landmark ruling, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the Constitution guarantees a right to same-sex marriage.’

Richen saysm “We currently find ourselves in a pivotal moment for civil rights. With a national dialogue on racial equality, racism and our system of criminal injustice, police brutality in the black community, the growing momentum of #BlackLivesMatter, the Supreme Court’s dismantling of the Voting Rights act, efforts to pass anti-LGBT Religious Freedom Restoration Acts and other conservative and evangelical pushback against LGBT rights gains, The New Black is incredibly timely. As a film that addresses the intersection of racial justice and LGBT civil rights, we are proud to be catalytic in launching so many conversations that are in line with a critical, necessary national dialogue currently underway.” [Read more…]

About Ray Trailer – Elle Fanning is a trans teen, alongside Naomi Watts & Susan Sarandon

August 7, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

about-ray-slideThere are quite a few high-profile LGBT-themed films starring well-known actors coming out before the end of the year, including Freeheld (starring Ellen Page and Julianne Moore) and Stonewall (with Jeremy Irvine). There’s also About Ray, starring Elle Fanning, Naomi Watts and Susan Sarandon, which we haven’t heard as much about, until now with the arrival of a trailer.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘About Ray tells the stirring and touching story of three generations of a family living under one roof in New York as they must deal with the life-changing transformation by one that ultimately affects them all. Ray (Elle Fanning) is a teenager who has come to the realization that she isn’t meant to be a girl and has decided to transition from female to male. His single mother, Maggie (Naomi Watts), must track down Ray’s biological father (Tate Donovan) to get his legal consent to allow Ray’s transition. Dolly (Susan Sarandon), Ray’s lesbian grandmother is having a hard time accepting that she now has a grandson. They must each confront their own identities and learn to embrace change and their strength as a family in order to ultimately find acceptance and understanding.’

As with the arguments raging over whether Stonewall will erase the contribution of trans* and people of color in the 1969 Stonewall riots, there are bound to be questions about a cisgender person playing a trans* character in About Ray, especially at a time of increasing awareness in the mainstream of transgender people. We will have to see what people have to see whe it arrives in US cinemas in September. [Read more…]

Roland Emmerich & Jeremy Irvine Respond To Stonewall ‘Whitewashing’ Critics

August 7, 2015 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

stonewall-brick-slideWe reported yesterday about the anger at the trailer for Stonewall, which had many up in arms accusing the movie of attempting to whitewash history, and replacing queer people of color with a white, cisgender gay man (played by Jeremy Irvine). As we suggested, it might be a little early to judge the movie, as we’ve only had a single trailer so far and no one has actually seen the full movie to see how it actually handles the story of the riots of summer 1969.

Director Roland Emmerich agrees (unsurprising), as he’s issued a statement, saying on Facebook, “When I first learned about the Stonewall Riots through my work with the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center, I was struck that the circumstances that lead to LGBT youth homelessness today are pretty much the same as they were 45 years ago. The courageous actions of everyone who fought against injustice in 1969 inspired me to tell a compelling, fictionalized drama of those days centering on homeless LGBT youth, specifically a young midwestern gay man who is kicked out of his home for his sexuality and comes to New York, befriending the people who are actively involved in the events leading up to the riots and the riots themselves.

“I understand that following the release of our trailer there have been initial concerns about how this character’s involvement is portrayed, but when this film – which is truly a labor of love for me – finally comes to theaters, audiences will see that it deeply honors the real-life activists who were there — including Marsha P. Johnson, Sylvia Rivera, and Ray Castro — and all the brave people who sparked the civil rights movement which continues to this day. We are all the same in our struggle for acceptance.”

Jeremy Irvine also felt compelled to respond via Instagram, particularly picking up one of the things that got people the most angry – that it looks like his character threw the first brick of the Stonewall riots, when it’s believed that in real-life it was a trans woman of color. He says, “To anyone with concerns about the diversity of the #StonewallMovie. I saw the movie for the first time last week and can assure you all that it represents almost every race and section of society that was so fundamental to one of the most important civil rights movements in living history.

“Marsha P Johnson is a major part of the movie, and although first hand accounts of who threw the first brick in the riots vary wildly, it is a fictional black transvestite character played by the very talented @vlad_alexis who pulls out the first brick in the riot scenes. My character is adopted by a group of street kids whilst sleeping rough in New York.

“In my opinion, the story is driven by the leader of this gang played by @jonnybeauchamp who gives an extraordinary performance as a Puerto Rican transvestite struggling to survive on the streets. Jonathan Rhys Meyers’ character represents the Mattachine Society, who were at the time a mostly white and middle class gay rights group who stood against violence and radicalism. I felt incredibly nervous taking on this role knowing how important the subject matter is to so many people but Roland Emmerich is one of the most sensitive and heartfelt directors I’ve worked with and I hope that, as an ensemble, we have not only done such an important story justice but also made a good movie as well.”

While many people have already made up their mind about the movie, dismissed it and really don’t care what either Irvine and Emmerich have to say (despite the fact none of them have actually seen it and only have hearsay to decide precisely how it tells its story), there are other more moderate voices which are currently being drowned out, who feel that by creating controversy now we may end up ruining a chance to bring the story of one of the most pivotal moments in gay rights – including the importance of  trans* and people of color – to a mainstream audience.

However both sides of the debate may want to wait until some people have actually seen the movie and can judge it on its own merits, not on just a two minute trailer. Perhaps it is as bad as some people are suggesting, but at the moment we really don’t know.

By The Sea Trailer – Angelina Jolie & Brad Pitt are unhappily married

August 7, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

by-the-sea-slideIt’s a real family affair, with Angelina Jolie writing, directing and starring in By The Sea, with Brad Pitt playing her husband.

The movie is set in France during the mid-1970s, with Jolie as former dancer Vanessa, and Pitt as her husband Roland, an American writer. As they travel the country together, they seem to be growing apart, but when they linger in one quiet, seaside town they begin to draw close to some of its more vibrant inhabitants, such as a local bar/café owner (War Horse’s Niels Arestrup) and hotel owner (Richard Bohringer).’

It’s not exactly the most scintillating of set-ups, but there is a certain level of intrigue to the trailer, suggesting it may have enough mood, class and style to make it worth a watch. The film’s due for release later this year. [Read more…]

August 7, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Available digitally on 3rd August 2015 and on DVD from 10th August 2015. And we’ve got three copies to give away.

John (Jack Reynor) lives with his mother Jean (Toni Collette) in a social housing suburb and ekes out a meager living as a nocturnal taxi driver. John returns home one morning after work to find his mother unconscious after overdosing on alcohol. This is not the first time John has found her in this state. Jean needs professional help but John has no savings, no insurance, and nobody to turn to. The only extra income he has is from some petty criminal jobs that he carries out in his taxi at night.

Jean violently rejects John’s attempts for help as well as his intentions to unite the family as his younger brother lives in a social care home. John turns to the local social centre for help and the centre suggests a rehab clinic outside of the city that has a month-long programme, but the stay will cost eight thousand euro.

Needing money fast, John offers his services to the criminal that supplies him with extra work, but is asked if he will move to the next level. After John agrees, the money comes through and Jean moves in to the rehab centre, momentarily content. But John has to complete a task that will change him and his family’s lives forever.

Should We Boycott Roland Emmerich’s Stonewall Movie?

August 6, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

stonewall-jeremy-irvine-slideFrom the moment it was revealed that Roland Emmerich’s upcoming Stonewall movie would centre around a white, cisgender man, played by Jeremy Irvine, there were murmurs of discontent, as central to the riots of 1969 were trans* people of color, and so there was concern the movie would whitewash the birth of modern gay rights.

While the likes of Emmerich have attempted to address these concerns (at least obliquely), the moment the trailer hit a couple of days – which put Irvine’s character front and centre, with people of color and trans* people on the sidelines – some people got very angry and they’re already calling for a boycott.

For example, a petition has been started, which says, ‘To all considering watching the newest whitewashed version of queer history. It is time that black and brown transwomyn and drag queens are recognized for their efforts in the riots throughout the nation. From the preview alone, we know that will not be happening. Majority of characters casted are white actors, cis men play the role of transwomyn, and folks who began the riots do not seem to be credited with such revolutionary acts.

‘WE ARE CALLING A BOYCOTT OF STONEWALL. Do not throw money at the capitalistic industry that fails to recognize true s/heros. Do not support a film that erases our history. Do not watch Stonewall. Tell your own history! Use social media to recall what you know to be true of Stonewall. Film your own short films. Make videos, write poems, sing songs. CONTINUE TO TEACH TRUE HISTORY.’

While you can understand the frustration and anger, it seems a little early to call for a boycott, as no one has actually seen the movie yet. Although unlikely to mollify the critics, it has been suggested that Irvine’s character is mainly used as a gateway to the Stonewall story and to characters a general audience may not easily immediately empathise with (even it is questionable whether they should pander to such prejudices, even if it might seem to the makers to make commercial sense in order to get more people into the cinema in the first place). However, the fact the synopsis is keen to point out it’s a fictionalised take on the true-story certainly gives us pause.

The petition certainly seems to be prejudging the movie based on only a short preview, although there are real questions to be answered, as pointed out in the article 5 Tweets That Sum Up Why People Are Upset About Stonewall.

The likes of Marsha P. Johnson, Silvia Rivera and Stormé DeLarverie are undoubtedly central to the true story the film is based on, and hopefully Stonewall can do justice to them and people like them who helped fight back against the prejudice of society, and who certainly weren’t all white, cis men.

It has also been hinted at that Irvine’s character doesn’t actually directly start the riot, but instead starts out as a timid, rather wasp-ish character, who is inspired by the diverse people around him in New York in 1969 to become more active and proud, and that it is the actions of those others that teaches him to stand up and be counted. However we will have to wait and see exactly how the movie handles the story and whether it does completely white-wash the Stonewall riots.

The film is out in the US on September 25th.

If you want to know a bit more about the true story of Stonewall versus the film’s trailer, it’s well worth taking a look at Matt Baume’s take below: [Read more…]

Heath Ledger Wasn’t Initially Considered ‘Macho Enough’ For Brokeback Mountain

August 6, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

brokeback-mountainSometimes after a movie is made, it’s difficult to imagine any other actors playing the roles. That’s certainly true of Brokeback Mountain, but apparently at one point it seemed unlikely Heath Ledger would get the role of Ennis Del Mar, as he wasn’t considered ‘macho enough’ for the role of the taciturn ranch-hand.

The news comes from Oscar-winning screenwriter Diana Ossana, who was chatting about the film to mark its 10th Anniversary on the The Michelangelo Signorile Show. She said, “[Ennis] was the most difficult role to cast. And that seemed to be the perpetual problem as we went on. And even a little bit for [director] Ang [Lee]. Another actor had committed [to the role of Ennis] and we had suggested Heath. But the studio didn’t feel he was macho enough.

“I thought that was a rather odd comment. But we just sort of stuck with it. And when that [other] actor backed out — and he did, after three months — I called Heath’s agent…It was interesting. Early on, Ang had wanted both the boys to be lifting weights and get all buff. Heath said,  ‘You know, I’m the ranch hand [in the film]. I wouldn’t have time to be lifting weights. I’m kind of scrawny and young.’ He said, ‘I’m not going to do that.’ So he didn’t.”

Heath was right, at it would have seemed slightly odd if both Ennis and Jack looked like they spent all their lives in the gym and were almost a porn version of what ranchers are. But it’s certainly interesting to hear how things could have been.
