I know many of you out there have been hoping that the entire idea of making a sequel to Top Gun would quietly go off and die somewhere, but Tony Scott is still keen on it, Tom Cruise has agreed to consider returning (depending on the script), and now Variety reports that The Town writer Peter Craig has been hired to write the movie, taking over from X-Men: First Class writers Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz.
The 1986 original follows students of an elite US Flying school for advanced fighter pilots, who compete to be best in the class, with Tom Cruise’s Maverick romancing the teacher. The sequel is said to be a look at Maverick in his later years, with Scott suggesting he’s interested in the move from fighter jets to remotely piloted vehicles, so Cruise’s character may be dealing with being made obsolete.
It’s not known when Top Gun 2 might start filming.
