If all had gone to the original plan, we’d have been queuing up to watch Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby in cinemas now, but then Warner decided to delay the movie from Christmas 2012 to May 2013. It’s an interesting tactic, as while traditionally a big budget literary release gets a winter release to potentially qualify for awards, summer is usually reserved for superheroes and other event movies.
We’ll have to wait and see whether it works, but to help get people in the mood for the F. Scott Fitzgerald adaptation, Warner has been releasing character poster for the movie. We don’t have the two main characters yet – Leo DiCaprio’s Jay Gatsby and Carey Mulligan’s Daisy Buchanan – but as you can see above and below, we do have ones for Tobey Maguire’s Nick Carraway, Elizabeth Debicki’s Jordan Baker and the adulterous couple of Joel Edgerton’s Tom Buchanan and Isla Fisher’s Myrtle Wilson.
The Great Gatsby follows Maguire’s Carraway, who gets caught up in the high society of Long Island in the 1930s, where he meets the rich, enigmatic Jay Gatsby, and uncovers the desires and machinations of those around him. It’s a great story that’s still waiting for a definitive film version, which hopefully Luhrmann can provide.
