When it was announced The Great Gatsby was getting delayed from a Christmas to a summer release, many wondered if the film would flounder in a season normally devoted to superheroes and action movies, but if this trailer is anything to go by, Baz Luhrnmann’s movie certainly has the feel of an effects driven, fantastical flick.
And despite F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel being one of the defining works of the jazz age, it also appears the movie will be full of anachronistic music – which we could easily have guessed from the fact Jay-Z was hired to help oversee the soundtrack. The trailer alone has music from Beyoncé, André 3000, Lana Del Rey, and Florence + The Machine.
The film is certainly going to be an interesting one to look out for. The Great Gatsby follows Tobey Maguire’s Nick Carraway, who gets caught up in the high society of Long Island in the 1930s, where he meets the rich, enigmatic Jay Gatsby (Leonardo Dicaprio), and uncovers the desires and machinations of those around him. It’s a great story that’s still waiting for a definitive film version, which hopefully Luhrmann can provide. Elizabeth Debicki, Joel Edgerton and Isla Fisher also star.
The film reaches US cinemas of May 10th and the UK on May 17th, 2013.
