In the last few years it’s felt like Tom Cruise’s ‘king of the A-list’ crown has started to wobble, with audiences only really seeming to want to see him in Mission: Impossible movies. However it appears they don’t mind him in a bit of sci-fi either, as Oblivion has opened to a pretty good $38 million, Cruise’s highest non Mission: Impossible debut since War Of The Worlds (and his fifth highest ever).
The film was helped by the fact it was the only new movie opening in wide release, and came ahead of the summer blockbuster season, which kicks off in earnest over the next couple of weeks. That gave Oblivion a slightly clearer run, something it needed now that Tom’s face alone isn’t enough to draw in the crowds.
It was the only new entry in the top 10, but take a look below to sees how the other recent release did over the weekend.
