Oblivion Tops The US Box Office

April 22, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

oblivion-poster3In the last few years it’s felt like Tom Cruise’s ‘king of the A-list’ crown has started to wobble, with audiences only really seeming to want to see him in Mission: Impossible movies. However it appears they don’t mind him in a bit of sci-fi either, as Oblivion has opened to a pretty good $38 million, Cruise’s highest non Mission: Impossible debut since War Of The Worlds (and his fifth highest ever).

The film was helped by the fact it was the only new movie opening in wide release, and came ahead of the summer blockbuster season, which kicks off in earnest over the next couple of weeks. That gave Oblivion a slightly clearer run, something it needed now that Tom’s face alone isn’t enough to draw in the crowds.

It was the only new entry in the top 10, but take a look below to sees how the other recent release did over the weekend.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 Oblivion $38.1 $38.1
2 42 $18.0 $54.0
3 The Croods $9.5 $154.8
4 Scary Movie 5 $6.2 $22.9
5 GI Joe: Retaliation $5.7 $111.2
6 The Place Beyond The Pines $4.7 $11.4
7 Olympus Has Fallen $4.5 $88.8
8 Evil Dead (2013) $4.1 $48.4
9 Jurassic Park 3D $4.0 $38.4
10 Oz The Great And Powerful $3.0 $223.7

42 Tops The US Box Office, With Scary Movie 5 Sliding In Second

April 15, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

42-poster2It’s rare that two movies are released in the same week in the US and box office watchers seem to have no idea how well either of them will do, or which would end up at the top of the box office (if either). However that was true of 42 and Scary Movie 5, with wildly differing estimates of how well they’d do in their run up to release, with some even suggesting both would end behind The Croods in their first weekend.

In the end it was 42 that won out, taking $27 million to top the box office in its first three day. It’s a good start for the Jackie Robinson biopic, helped by decent reviews as well as the fact it appeals to lovers of baseball and those who like historical biopics.

Scary Movie 5 placed second with $15.2 million, which is massively down on Scary Movie 4’s $40 million opening, but not as bad as some had predicted (especially considering the seven year gap since the last one). With a budget of $20 million, it should end up in profit.

Further down the list The Place Beyond The Pines made its first appearance in the top 10 after expanding the amount of screens it’s been playing on. It took $4 million after jumping from 30 to 484 screens.

However it was outside the US that the real success was seen, as the Tom Cruise sci-fi Oblivion took $61 million after opening in 52 territories. That’s way ahead of Cruise’s last movie, Jack Reacher, as suggests a big US bow when it opens there this Friday.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of April 12th-14th

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 42 $27.7 $27.2
2 Scary Movie 5 $15.1 $15.1
3 The Croods $13.2 $142.5
4 GI Joe: Retaliation $10.8 $102.4
5 Evil Dead (2013) $9.5 $41.5
6 Jurassic Park 3D $8.8 $31.9
7 Olympus Has Fallen $7.2 $81.8
8 Oz The Great And Powerful $4.9 $219.4
9 Tyler Perry’s Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor $4.5 $45.4
10 The Place Beyond The Pines $4.0 $5.4

Evil Dead Remake Tops The US Box Office & Jurassic Park 3D Thrills Audiences

April 8, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

evil-dead-remake-poster1While some still think the idea of remaking Evil Dead is sacrilege, US audiences have shown that they’re pretty happy about is, as the film has topped the box office with $26 million in its opening weekend. It’s a pretty good but not astounding start, although reports of a middling response from audiences may mean it’ll drop quickly down the charts.

The only other new entry was the re-release of Jurassic Park in 3D, which took $18 million in its first three days. That’s slightly behind The Phantom Menace but ahead of Titanic. With many being pretty impressed by the 3D conversion, it’s likely to do well over the coming days.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of April 5th-7th.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 Evil Dead (2013) $26.0 $26.0
2 GI Joe: Retaliation $21.1 $86.6
3 The Croods $21.1 $125.8
4 Jurassic Park 3D $18.2 $18.2
5 Olympus Has Fallen $10.0 $71.1
6 Tyler Perry’s Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor $10.0 $38.3
7 Oz The Great And Powerful $8.1 $212.7
8 The Host $5.2 $19.6

Evil Dead 2 Script In The Works, With More Talk Of A Fourth Raimi Movie

March 11, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

evil-dead-remake-poster1The remake of Evil Dead hasn’t opened yet, but it premiered at SXSW on Friday, garnering a mixed but more positive reaction than many had expected. At the post screening Q&A, director Fede Alvarez confirmed (via THR) that Sony Pictures is so happy with the movie that a screenplay for Evil Dead 2 is already in the works, with the hope of it becoming a trilogy.

The reviews coming out of SXSW have suggested the remake may be the goriest movie ever released by a major studio, so if you like blood and guts, you’re in for a treat.

However if your wondering what this means for the mooted fourth Sam Raimi Evil Dead movie, Bruce Campbell and producer Robert Tapert have been talking about it, and suggesting that if it is made, it will be a direct sequel to the final film, 1993’s Army Of Darkness.

Raimi said last week that he would start writing Evil Dead 4 this summer with his brother Ivan. However he later said he’d been pressured into saying that by fans, although others involved have said it is indeed in the works. It was Rob Tapert who said the fourth Raimi Evil Dead is actually going to be Army of Darkness 2 (via ComingSoon). He explains. “That would be Army of Darkness 2. Everybody calls it Evil Dead 4, but Army Of Darkness wasn’t called Evil Dead anywhere except by the fans.”

That also helps explain how they could continue the franchise even at the same time as the original is being turned into a remake trilogy.

Bruce Campbell added to the rumours saying, “Sam threatens this every six months. I’ve heard this a thousand times, because in the back of his mind, he never wants to let go, because he loved making these movies. We all loved making them together. They were a nightmare to make, very difficult, but they lasted the test of time, so he’s not going to let that go, and I’m never going to say ‘no.’ It’ll be me and a walker fighting some other old guy. But that’s what he does and who knows? It may happen.”

We’ll just have to wait and see if it ever does happen.

New Evil Dead Trailer Arrives – Take a green band look at the remake

January 21, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

We’ve had a couple of gory red band trailer for Evil Dead, but they were so keen on showing us that this was not a cop out and would be keeping the blood and guts of the original, that there wasn’t much room for story. So if you do care about the plot, a new green band trailer has arrived.

In the movie five twenty-something friends become holed up in a remote cabin where they discover a Book Of The Dead and unwittingly summon up dormant demons living in the nearby woods, which possess the youngsters in succession until only one is left intact to fight for survival.

The movie hits UK cinemas April 13th, 2013.

New Evil Dead Remake Trailer – Things are getting very gory

January 4, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

When it was announced several years ago that they were planning on remaking The Evil Dead, the presumption was that it would be a toned down, PG-13 rated cash-in. However everything we’ve seen of the movie so far has been keen to suggest that blood, guts and gore are very much part of the film. Indeed this latest trailer is impressively grisly!

Evil Dead Remake Poster – Making claims it can’t live up to?

November 21, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Perhaps we’ll all get to phone Claims Direct next April and say we want compensation because despite the promise of this poster, the remake of The Evil Dead isn’t ‘The most terrifying film you will ever experience’. But hey, perhaps it will be, and instead we’ll have the check into the hospital to deal with out shattered nerves.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Five twenty-something friends become holed up in a remote cabin where they discover a Book Of The Dead and unwittingly summon up dormant demons living in the nearby woods, which possess the youngsters in succession until only one is left intact to fight for survival.’ That’s exactly the same as the original, but this do-over doe s change a few things, such as the Bruce Campbell character in the original now becoming a woman.

If you want to see more, take a look at the red band teaser. The film is due to hit cinemas April 12th 2013.

The Evil Dead Red Band Teaser – First look at the Raimi produced remake

October 25, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Although a lot of people’s knee-jerk reaction to the idea of remaking The Evil Dead has been less than positive, that fact Sam Raimi’s been involved has given many pause to wonder whether it might end up okay. Now the first teaser has arrived, which largely seems designed to show that the elements from the original people loved will still be present, and there’ll still be plenty of blood, guts and gore. It certainly looks a lot shinier than Raimi’s original, but there’s plenty of promise here. Here’s the synopsis: ‘In the much anticipated remake of the 1981 cult-hit horror film, five twenty-something friends become holed up in a remote cabin. When they discover a Book of the Dead, they unwittingly summon up dormant demons living in the nearby woods, which possess the youngsters in succession until only one is left intact to fight for survival.’ It’ll hit cinemas next April.

First Evil Dead Remake Photo Arrives

October 15, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

After several years in development, a remake of The Evil Dead finally went into production a few months ago with Fede Alvarez directing and Sam Raimi producing. Now the first image from the movie has arrived via EW, who’s taken over the role originated by Bruce Campbell. She’s certainly not looking very healthy in this shot though.

Those worried this will be toned down Evil Dead apparently don’t need to worry, as it’s expected the first cut submitted to the MPAA will get the NC-17 rating only really extremely violent movies get (although it will get cuts to take it back to the edge of the more commercially friendly R-rating). It’ll be in cinemas next spring.

Jessica Lucas Up For Evil Dead Remake

March 8, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The cast of the long-gestating remake of The Evil Dead is filling up, with THR reporting that Cloverfield actress Jessica Lucas has joined the cast of the movie, along with Newcomer Elizabeth Blackmore.

The film is about a group of friends who spend the weekend in a remote cabin, only to unwittingly unleash an evil force after reading from The Book of the Dead. Last month that Suburgatory star Jane Levy replaced Lily Colling as female lead Mia, who goes on the trip to try and kick her drug addiction. Jessica Lucas will play Mia’s best friend, who is also a nurse, which Elizabeth Blackmore will play the fiancee of Shiloh Fernandez’s character.

Federico Alvarez is directing The Evil Dead from a script he co-wrote with Rodolfo Sayagues, which was rewritten by Diablo Cody. Shooting is set to begin next month in New Zealand.
