Evil Dead Remake Tops The US Box Office & Jurassic Park 3D Thrills Audiences

While some still think the idea of remaking Evil Dead is sacrilege, US audiences have shown that they’re pretty happy about is, as the film has topped the box office with $26 million in its opening weekend. It’s a pretty good but not astounding start, although reports of a middling response from audiences may mean it’ll drop quickly down the charts.

The only other new entry was the re-release of Jurassic Park in 3D, which took $18 million in its first three days. That’s slightly behind The Phantom Menace but ahead of Titanic. With many being pretty impressed by the 3D conversion, it’s likely to do well over the coming days.

G.I. Joe Retaliation Tops The US Box Office

Many thought that after the first GI Joe film failed to set the box office alight, that would be the last we’d see of it on the big screen, but the franchise has returned with GI Joe: Retaliation. The movie may have opened lower than its predecessor, taking $54 million versus $41 million in its opening weekend (although Retaliation can add another $10 million from Thursday), but it’s more than many had thought.

With a very healthy $130+ opening worldwide, Variety reports that this is more than enough to get the ball rolling on a third movie. It’s early days so nothing has been set for this third movie yet – there’s no director or writers at the moment – but assuming Retaliation’s gross holds up over the coming weeks, they’ll probably want to move pretty fast on it.

Tyler Perry’s Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor placed third on the US box office chart with $22 million in its first three days. It’s his best opening for a non Madea movie and marks his ninth film to gross more than $20 million on its opening weekend (only Steven Spielberg and Robert Zemeckis have had more $20m+ debuts).

The Host had less to cheer about, as despite hope that it would capture the Twilight crowd, it opened in sixth spot with $11 million. As with the likes of Beautiful Creatures, it’s struggled to capture the interest of teens, who seem to be all-or-nothing in their adoration of these potential franchises.

The Croods Tops The US Box Office, With Olympus Has Fallen Beating Expectations

After DreamWorks Animation was forced to make tonnes of redundancies last month following the failure of Rise Of The Guardians, they’ll have a bit of cheer this morning with the news that The Croods has topped the US box office with $44 million. It’s a decent start, which is about on par with the studio’s Megamind and How To Train Your Dragon.

Also doing well was second place finisher Olympus Has Fallen. Audiences obviously liked the idea of Gerard Butler fighting terrorists in the White House, as the film took more than almost anyone had predicted, with $30 million in its first three days. It’s great news for Butler, whose star power has been in the balance after a string of flops.

There was less cheer for Admission, which tanked with just $6.4 million on its opening. That’s the lowest start for any Tina Fey live-action movie.

After a great start in three cinemas last week, Spring Breakers expanded onto 1,100 screens and into the top 10 with $5 million. It’s certainly not bad for a movie from a tiny, indie distributor, which has been relying on word of mouth to gets its name out there.

New Admission Trailer – Tina Fey wants a better job at Princeton University

In Admission, Tina Fey plays Portia Nathan, the assistant admissions officer at the Princeton University, who’s involved with her colleague Mark (Michael Sheen). An opportunity arises when she discovers that her boss (Wallace Shawn) is retiring. However if she wants his jobs she’s have to compete with friend/colleague Corinne (Gloria Reuben).

Her life goes in an unexpected direction when she heads for as experimental New Hampshire school to evaluate students who are applying to Princeton. She finds a connection with the school’s co-founder, John Halsey (Paul Rudd), and he introduces her to precocious college applicant Jeremiah (Nat Wolff), who could be the son she gave up when she was younger.

Based on Jean Hanff Korelitz’s 2009 novel, Admission will be released sometime next year.

You gotta love Tina Fey, and while she hasn’t had a huge amount of success with movies she’s starred in (Baby Mama in particular should be struck off her CV), she’ll be hoping for more success with Admission. In the film she is Portia Nathan, the assistant admissions officer at the Princeton University, who’s involved with her colleague Mark (Michael Sheen). An opportunity arises when she discovers that her boss (Wallace Shawn) is retiring. However if she wants his jobs she’s have to compete with friend/colleague Corinne (Gloria Reuben).

Paul Rudd May Take Admission Opposite Tina Fey

A few days ago we reported that Owen Wilson was eying a role in Admission, opposite Tin Fey, with both of them going in a less overtly comic direction for the film than we tend to associate with them. Now the LA Times suggests Wilson has decided against the movie and Paul Rudd is interested in taking his place, with early talks taking place between the actor and filmmakers.

Based on Jean Hanff Korelitz’s novel, Fey will play an Ivy League admissions officer named Portia Nathan whose relationship with a 17-year-old recruitment prospect threatens to unravel her personal, romantic, and professional lives. Rudd would play a teacher at an alternative high school who falls for Fey.

Fey has now committed to the movie, although Rudd is currently less certain. Director Paul Weitz hopes to shoot the movie in June, once Fey has finished the current season of 30 Rock.

Tina Fey & Owen Wilson May Seek Admission

For a couple of months, Tina Fey has been thinking about starring in Paul Weitz’s movie Admission, which surprised some as the film appears to be a drama rather than her more usual comic territory. Now it appears she may get some company in the movie from another actor stepping outside his comedy safe-zone, as Vulture reports that Owen Wilson is mulling over a role in the film.

Based on Jean Hanff Korelitz’s novel, ‘Fey would play an Ivy League admissions officer named Portia Nathan whose relationship with a 17-year-old recruitment prospect threatens to unravel her personal, romantic, and professional lives. Wilson, we hear, would play a teacher at an alternative high school who falls for Fey.’

Fey is apparently close to signing, while Wilson is currently weighing his options, which likely include other roles that will pay better than this one. However, after the success of Midnight In Paris, he may well be looking for other projects that potentially give him the same critical response as Woody Allen’s flick.

Weitz hopes to shoot the movie in June, once Fey has finished the current season of 30 Rock.
