G.I. Joe Retaliation Tops The US Box Office

April 1, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

gi-joe-retaliation-poster1Many thought that after the first GI Joe film failed to set the box office alight, that would be the last we’d see of it on the big screen, but the franchise has returned with GI Joe: Retaliation. The movie may have opened lower than its predecessor, taking $54 million versus $41 million in its opening weekend (although Retaliation can add another $10 million from Thursday), but it’s more than many had thought.

With a very healthy $130+ opening worldwide, Variety reports that this is more than enough to get the ball rolling on a third movie. It’s early days so nothing has been set for this third movie yet – there’s no director or writers at the moment – but assuming Retaliation’s gross holds up over the coming weeks, they’ll probably want to move pretty fast on it.

Tyler Perry’s Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor placed third on the US box office chart with $22 million in its first three days. It’s his best opening for a non Madea movie and marks his ninth film to gross more than $20 million on its opening weekend (only Steven Spielberg and Robert Zemeckis have had more $20m+ debuts).

The Host had less to cheer about, as despite hope that it would capture the Twilight crowd, it opened in sixth spot with $11 million. As with the likes of Beautiful Creatures, it’s struggled to capture the interest of teens, who seem to be all-or-nothing in their adoration of these potential franchises.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of March 29th-31st.

1 GI Joe: Retaliation $41.2 $51.7

The Croods Tops The US Box Office, With Olympus Has Fallen Beating Expectations

March 25, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

croods-preview2After DreamWorks Animation was forced to make tonnes of redundancies last month following the failure of Rise Of The Guardians, they’ll have a bit of cheer this morning with the news that The Croods has topped the US box office with $44 million. It’s a decent start, which is about on par with the studio’s Megamind and How To Train Your Dragon.

Also doing well was second place finisher Olympus Has Fallen. Audiences obviously liked the idea of Gerard Butler fighting terrorists in the White House, as the film took more than almost anyone had predicted, with $30 million in its first three days. It’s great news for Butler, whose star power has been in the balance after a string of flops.

There was less cheer for Admission, which tanked with just $6.4 million on its opening. That’s the lowest start for any Tina Fey live-action movie.

After a great start in three cinemas last week, Spring Breakers expanded onto 1,100 screens and into the top 10 with $5 million. It’s certainly not bad for a movie from a tiny, indie distributor, which has been relying on word of mouth to gets its name out there.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of March 22nd-24th.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 The Croods $44.7 $44.7
2 Olympus Has Fallen $30.5 $30.5
3 Oz The Great And Powerful $22.0 $177.5
4 The Call $8.7 $30.9
5 Admission $6.4 $6.4
6 Spring Breakers $5.0 $5.4
7 The Incredible Burt Wonderstone $4.2 $17.3
8 Jack The Giant Slayer $2.9 $59.0
9 Identity Thief $2.5 $127.7
10 Snitch $1.9 $40.3

Spring Breakers Trailer – Harmony Korine teams up with James Franco and goes a little girls gone wild

January 18, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Everything is about James Franco at the moment – this is the third story I’ve posted about him today! He stars in this one, teaming up with Gummo and Trash Humpers director for Spring Breakers.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Brit (Ashley Benson), Candy (Vanessa Hudgens), Cotty (Rachel Korine), and Faith (Selena Gomex) have been best friends since grade school. They live together in a boring college dorm and are hungry for adventure. All they have to do is save enough money for spring break to get their shot at having some real fun. A serendipitous encounter with rapper “Alien” (James Franco) promises to provide the girls with all the thrill and excitement they could hope for. With the encouragement of their new friend, it soon becomes unclear how far the girls are willing to go to experience a spring break they will never forget.’

While the movie itself is getting mixed reviews, there’s been a lot of praise for Franco, who really seems to throw himself into the hair-braided role.

James Franco On For Spring Breakers

November 2, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

There seems something rather fitting about the idea of the free-spirited and experimental James Franco signing up to star in a movie by the slightly nutty Harmony Korine (Gummo, Mister Lonely, Trash Humpers). That said, with Emma Roberts also possibly coming on-board, it would appear Korine’s got a slightly bigger budget this time around and presumably therefore won’t be making anything quite as strange as some of his earlier work.

Variety has the news and says the film is about, ‘four college-aged girls who rob a fast food restaurant to afford spring break in Florida, only to get arrested upon their arrival… Alien, a rapping drug and arms dealer, bails them out and entices them to kill his arch-rival, a murderer who is appropriately named Arch.’ For most people that would be edgy, but for Korine it’s actually a little tame!

Franco would play the rapping drug dealer (a part he’s mentioned before, while not giving away any more details than that) while Roberts, who’s in early talks, would be Candy, a Southern brunette who feeds off danger.

Is Korine going mainstream? It happens to a lot of edgy directors as the get older, but hopefully he’ll be able to get a wider audience without completely giving up on the edge that made people take notice of him in the first place.
