Kumail Nanjiani, Octavia Spencer & John Cena Join Robert Downey Jr. In The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle

March 29, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Just over a year ago it was revealed that Robert Downey Jr. was sett to follow in Rex Harrison’s (and Eddie Murphy’s) footsteps by playing Doctor Dolittle on the big screen. Now the cast has grown, with the likes of Kumail Nanjiani, Octavia Spencer & John Cena, who will be voicing animals alongside the previously announced Tom Holland, Selena Gomez, Emma Thompson, and Ralph Fiennes.

Antonio Banderas is onboard to play a pirate, with Michael Sheen as a character called Mudfly.

To help us picture who everyone in the voice cast will be, Downey Jr. tweeted out and image to show who’s a giraffe, who’s a dog and who’s a parrot. You can take a look at that image below.

The will be based around Hugh Lofting’s famous children’s character, a doctor who tires of treating animals and learns to speak to animals. There’s no news on the exact story for this new version, but it will involve the Doctor will be going off on a big trip. The film is due out April 2019 and is planned as the first part of a new film franchise. [Read more…]

In Dubious Battle Trailer – James Franco takes on a John Steinbeck adaptation

August 30, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

in-dubious-battle-slideWhile James Franco hasn’t had any big successes as a director, you certainly can’t blame him for aiming high. He’s previously adapted the likes of William Faulkner and Cormac McCarthy for the big screen, and now he’s taking on John Steinbeck with In Dubious Battle.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Set in the orchards of California Valley in the dirty ’30s, Steinbeck’s tale follows two young idealists from “The Party” who are appalled by the orchards’ terrible working conditions and set out to organize the fruit pickers. Having arrived from out of town, Mac McLeod (Franco) and Jim Nolan (Nat Wolff) are met with skepticism and some outright hostility when they first suggest unionizing. Most of the pickers simply want to work and get paid, even if they are being mercilessly exploited. Mac and Jim realize that their progress depends on convincing local elder Al Anderson (Vincent D’Onofrio). He’s a hard nut, but could be won over after Mac helps his daughter-in-law, Lisa (Selena Gomez), when she goes into labour. Surrounding the two activists is a cast of eclectic characters with varying loyalties, among them the ruthless orchard owner (Robert Duvall), who is determined to crack down on any strike action.’

A trailer for the movie has now arrived, which you can watch below. The film debuts at the Venice International Film Festival, with a Toronto International Film Festival screening shortly afterwards. It’s not known when it will be released. [Read more…]

Hotel Transylvania 2 (DVD Review)

February 18, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg, Mel Brooks, Selena Gomez, Kevin James
Director: Genndy Tartakovsky
Running Time: 89 mins
Certificate: U
Release Date: February 15th 2016 (UK)

Hotel Transylvania was a far bigger success than many people expected. Indeed, even Sony Pictures appeared to be taken by surprise, but it didn’t take them long to decide a sequel was needed. That follow-up quickly takes us through the next few years of the story, which sees monsters and humans starting to get along better across the world.

Dracula’s daughter Mavis marries slacker boyfriend Jonathan and they have a child, Dennis. As Dennis is only half-vampire, it’s not clear whether he will end up being a monster or not, but Dracula is determined that before he’s five, his grandson will spout fangs, as he knows that otherwise he will remain human forever. Mavis meanwhile feels that if Dennis is indeed more human than monster, perhaps it would be better if they went to live in the ‘normal’ world. [Read more…]

The Big Short Trailer – Christian Bale, Ryan Gosling & Brad Pitt get into a financial crisis

September 22, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

big-short-trailer-slideThe Big Short certainly has an impressive cast – including Christian Bale, Ryan Gosling, Steve Carell, Melissa Leo, Brad Pitt, Marisa Tomei, Karen Gillan and Selena Gomez – all attracted by a major studio movie that takes on the causes of the financial crisis, and those who saw what was coming when no one else could.

They also all seem to have slightly odd hair, but perhaps financial type people like having hair that looks like it was stuck on their head.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘When four outsiders saw what the big banks, media and government refused to, the global collapse of the economy, they had an idea: The Big Short. Their bold investment leads them into the dark underbelly of modern banking where they must question everyone and everything. Based on the true story and best-selling book by Michael Lewis (The Blind Side, Moneyball), and directed by Adam Mckay (Anchorman, Step Brothers) The Big Short stars Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling and Brad Pitt.’

An Oscar-qualifying Christmas release is planned for the US before in spreads to the rest of the world in early 2016. [Read more…]

James Franco Lines Up Starry Cast For Steinbeck Adaptation In Dubious Battle

February 1, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

james-franco

James Franco has directed far more movies than most people realise, and part of the reason many have gone under the radar is that that are small films with the only well-known name being behind the camera (and ended up with limited distribution).

However he’s thinking bigger with his Steinbeck adaptation In Dubious Battle, with THR reporting that Franco will star alongside Selena Gomez, Vincent D’Onofrio, Robert Duvall, Ed Harris, Bryan Cranston and Danny McBride.

Published in 1936, In Dubious Battle is considered the first major work of Pulitzer Prize-winning author John Steinbeck. Set in a fictionalized valley in California, the story explores themes Steinbeck continued to develop: group behavior, social injustice, man’s inhumanity to man— all themes which continue to be relevant today. A labor conflict between migrant apple pickers and the local growers’ association is the backdrop against which Jim Nolan (Franco) becomes involved in the labor movement and rapidly matures as he learns what it means to do organizational fieldwork.

It doesn’t exactly sound like the most thrilling of plots, but it was always one of Steinbeck’s skills, to make seemingly dull subject – quite often labour relations and the precarious position of manual labourers in a changing world – and make them interesting. Hopefully Franco will do the same. He’s certainly got a good cast to help him.

The movie will start shooting next month.

Getaway Trailer – Ethan Hawke & Selena Gomez go on a drive

June 7, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It doesn’t look like Ethan Hawke’s character is going to be having much fun in Getaway, but at least he’s got Selena Gomez along for the ride.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Getaway is the gritty, heart-pounding action thriller from Warner Bros. Pictures and Dark Castle Entertainment in which former race car driver Brent Magna (Ethan Hawke) is pitted against the clock. Desperately trying to save the life of his kidnapped wife, Brent commandeers a custom Shelby Cobra Mustang, taking it and its unwitting owner (Selena Gomez) on a high-speed race against time, at the command of the mysterious villain holding his wife hostage.’

It’s out in the US in August and currently scheduled for an early October release in the UK.

Spring Breakers Trailer – Harmony Korine teams up with James Franco and goes a little girls gone wild

January 18, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Everything is about James Franco at the moment – this is the third story I’ve posted about him today! He stars in this one, teaming up with Gummo and Trash Humpers director for Spring Breakers.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Brit (Ashley Benson), Candy (Vanessa Hudgens), Cotty (Rachel Korine), and Faith (Selena Gomex) have been best friends since grade school. They live together in a boring college dorm and are hungry for adventure. All they have to do is save enough money for spring break to get their shot at having some real fun. A serendipitous encounter with rapper “Alien” (James Franco) promises to provide the girls with all the thrill and excitement they could hope for. With the encouragement of their new friend, it soon becomes unclear how far the girls are willing to go to experience a spring break they will never forget.’

While the movie itself is getting mixed reviews, there’s been a lot of praise for Franco, who really seems to throw himself into the hair-braided role.

The Sky Is Everywhere For Selena Gomez

January 24, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

She may only be 19, but Selena Gomes is getting proactive about her career and adding a producer credit to her resumé. According to Deadline, her production company, July Moon, has optioned Jandy Nelson’s novel The Sky Is Everywhere, with the former Disney Channel star planning to both produce and star in a movie adaptation.

She will play 17-year old Lennie Walker, a bookworm and band geek who plays clarinet and lives in the shadow of her extroverted older sister, Bailey. When Bailey dies suddenly, her younger sibling is left to take centre stage and balance not one boy but two. One is his sister’s grieving boyfriend, the other a musically inclined Parisian. Her whole world threatens to collapse all over again as she tries to juggle both guys.

It’s early days on the adaptation yet, so there’s no info on when it might shoot.
