While One Direction’s 3D documentary, This Is Us, topped the three-day weekend, when estimates for the Labor Day holiday were added in, The Butler held off the boy band onslaught to take the top spot on the US box office chart with $20 million.
This Is Us took the second spot with $18 million. That’s below the likes of Miley Cyrus, Justin Bieber and Michael Jackson, but ahead of flops from Katy Perry and the Jonas Brothers. And seeing as it only cost $10 million to make it should be very profitable.
However the big story was the film at number 5, Instructions Not Included. Few mainstream film analysts had even heard of the movie, largely because it was only opening on 347 screens. However its 10 million four-day take ended up being the biggest opening ever for a Spanish-language movie. While movies for Hispanic audiences have been growing in popularity, this one blew all previous efforts out of the water.
The final new entry was the Ethan Hawke and Selena Gomez movie Getaway, which just snuck into the top 10 with a less than impressive $5.5 million.
Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of August 30th to September 2nd.
