Matthew Vaughn has been working on an adaptation of Mark Millar’s Secret Service for years. When he stepped away from helming X-Men: Days Of Future Past earlier this year, he said it was partly so he could concentrate on the movie. He’s already cast Colin Firth in one of the lead roles, and now he’s added newcomer Taron Egerton, according to Variety.
Firth is set to play Uncle Jack, an MI6 spy, with Egerton as his nephew, Gary. Jack takes the youngster under his wing to teach him the ropes, in hopes the dodgy youngster will change his ways and become an MI6 agent.
No deal has been done yet, but negotiations are expected to start shortly. Others considered for the role include Vaughn’s Kick-Ass star, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, although the director eventually decided to go with something less well known. He also met the likes of Jack O’Connell and Attack the Block star John Boyega.
Interestingly Egerton is so new to the business he doesn’t have an agent (hence why we don’t have a pic of him), so Vaughn really is plucking him from obscurity. He did appear in an episode of Lewis though.
Vaughn is now looking to cast the female lead and the villain. Emma Watson and Dark Shadows’ Bella Heathcote are apparently high on the list for the former, with Vaughn hoping to cast a high-profile star like Tom Cruise or Leonardo DiCaprio for the latter (although both those actors have already turned down the part).
The hope is to shoot later this year for release next year.
