Final Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again Trailer – ABBA-tastic?

May 8, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While it’s derided by many, Mamma Mia! is one of the most successful movie musicals ever made, grossing over $600 million. For a time it was the highest grossing movie ever in the UK, and the highest grossing movie directed by a woman worldwide.

As a result it’s getting a sequel that brings back most of the original cast – although as the trailer suggests there may have been a significant death – as well as taking us into the past and just how Meryl Streep’s character ended up having three men who could have been the father of her child.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Ten years after Mamma Mia! The Movie grossed more than $600 million around the world, you are invited to return to the magical Greek island of Kalokairi in an all-new original musical based on the songs of ABBA. With the film’s original cast returning and new additions including Lily James (Cinderella, Baby Driver), the musical comedy will open in UK cinemas on 20th July 2018.

‘Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again is produced by Judy Craymer and Gary Goetzman, producers of the original film. Craymer is also the creator and producer of the worldwide smash-hit stage musical.

‘Ol Parker, writer of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, writes and directs the sequel from a story by Catherine Johnson, Richard Curtis and Parker. Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus return to provide music and lyrics and serve as executive producers. Tom Hanks, Rita Wilson, Phyllida Lloyd, Richard Curtis and Nicky Kentish Barnes also serve as executive producers.

‘Reprising their roles from Mamma Mia! The Movie are Academy Award® winner Meryl Streep as Donna, Julie Walters as Rosie and Christine Baranski as Tanya. Amanda Seyfried and Dominic Cooper reunite as Sophie and Sky, while Pierce Brosnan, Stellan Skarsgård and Oscar® winner Colin Firth return to play Sophie’s three possible dads: Sam, Bill and Harry.

‘As the film goes back and forth in time to show how relationships forged in the past resonate in the present, James will play the role of Young Donna. Filling the roles of Young Rosie and Young Tanya are Alexa Davies (A Brilliant Young Mind) and Jessica Keenan Wynn (Broadway’s Beautiful). Young Sam will be played by Jeremy Irvine (War Horse), while Young Bill is Josh Dylan (Allied) and Young Harry is Hugh Skinner (Kill Your Friends).’

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again will be released in UK cinemas on 20th July 2018. [Read more…]

The Happy Prince Trailer – Rupert Everett takes on the final days of Oscar Wilde

April 19, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

We caught The Happy Prince recently at the BFI Flare LGBTQ+ Film Festival – you can read what we thought here – and now the trailer and poster for the movie has arrived. You can take a look at it below.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘THE HAPPY PRINCE, written and directed by, as well as starring, Rupert Everett, opens in cinemas across the UK on 15 June. The film features a stellar supporting cast of British actors including Colin Firth (The King’s Speech, A Single Man), Emily Watson (On Chesil Beach, Gosford Park), Colin Morgan (The Fall, Testament of Youth) and Edwin Thomas (Endeavour).

‘Building from his own 2012 lauded stage portrayal of Wilde in David Hare’s The Judas Kiss, Everett physically and emotionally embodies the literary genius as he lives out his last days in exile in Europe, in a performance described by critics as “flawless” and “the best thing Everett has done”.

‘The film opens in Paris, where Wilde, by now in his forties, penniless and in poor health, is still reeling after being imprisoned in England for his love affair with Lord Alfred ‘Bosie’ Douglas (Morgan). Out of prison but a pariah, Wilde swings between grief and a determination to wrest whatever pleasure and beauty he can from the time he has left. His body ailing and heavy, his mind spinning, he survives by falling back on the flamboyant irony and brilliant wit that defined him.

‘Everett’s Wilde is tortured but determined to remain true to himself. His thoughts are filled with love and betrayal and permeated with those closest to him: Bosie, his literary agent Robbie Ross (Edwin Thomas), his great friend Reggie Turner (Firth) and his estranged wife Constance (Watson).

‘As the film travels through Wilde’s final act, and journeys from England to France and Italy, desire and loyalty face off, the transience of lust is laid bare, and the true riches of love are revealed.

‘THE HAPPY PRINCE will be released in cinemas on 15 June 2018 through Lionsgate UK.’ [Read more…]

The Happy Prince (BFI Flare Review) – Rupert Everett takes on Oscar Wilde’s post-prison life

April 2, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Rupert Everett, Emily Mortimer, Colin Firth, Edwin Thomas, Colin Morgan
Director: Rupert Everett
Running Time: 105 mins
Certificate: NR
Release Date: June 15th 2018 (UK Cinema)

The Happy Prince has been a true passion project for writer, director and actor Rupert Everett. After years of trying to get it to the screen he’s finally been able to make the movie, which looks at the lesser known story of what happened to Oscar Wilde after was released from prison following his sentence for gross indecency with men.

Knowing his fame/infamy means staying in Britain is impossible, Wilde (Everett) heads for the continent. We first see him ill and barely surviving in Paris, still trying to live it up (beyond his means), but only just hanging on. The film then flashes back to his arrival in France when things seemed very different. Friends including Robbie Ross (Edwin Thomas) and Reggie Turner (Colin Firth) are keen to help him build a new life. He’s got money thanks to a stipend from his estranged wife and after two years of hard labour the sun of France gives Oscar a sense of optimism. [Read more…]

Kingsman: The Golden Circle Trailer – Taron Egerton is back & meeting his American counterparts

April 26, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Kingsman was a bigger success than most had expected. It was more than enough to get it a sequel, which will be released later this year. Along with the return of British agents Taron Egerton and Colin Firth (yes, he will return), we will be introduced to the Statesmen, the US version of the Kingsmen.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘“Kingsman: The Secret Service” introduced the world to Kingsman – an independent, international intelligence agency operating at the highest level of discretion, whose ultimate goal is to keep the world safe. In “Kingsman: The Golden Circle,” our heroes face a new challenge. When their headquarters are destroyed and the world is held hostage, their journey leads them to the discovery of an allied spy organization in the US called Statesman, dating back to the day they were both founded. In a new adventure that tests their agents’ strength and wits to the limit, these two elite secret organizations band together to defeat a ruthless common enemy, in order to save the world, something that’s becoming a bit of a habit for Eggsy…

Colin Firth Joins Disney’s Mary Poppins Sequel

October 20, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

colin-firthWhile Disney doesn’t plan shooting its planned musical Mary Poppins sequel until early next year, but it’s been busy building the cast to ensure it can have the best bunch of actors it can find. The latest to join is Colin Firth, according to Variety.

He will star alongside Emily Blunt as Mary Poppins, Ben Whishaw and Emily Mortimer as a grown-up Michael and Jane Banks, Hamilton’s Lin Manuel Miranda as lamplighter Jack (the equivalent of the Dick Van Dyke role) and Meryl Streep as Poppins’ cousin Topsy. Firth meanwhile will be William Weatherall Wilkins, president of Fidelity Fiduciary Bank.

The follow-up will be set in the 1930s and follow Michael and Jane Banks, as well as their children, after a major event takes place in their lives. That event results in the return of the magical Mary Poppins, who teams up with Jack to help the family.

Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman (Hairspray, Smash) will write the songs, with David Magee penning the script, based on PL Travers other Poppins stories. Rob Marshall is set to direct, with a December 2018 release date set.
