If we’re not careful, right-wing nutters will start talking about a gay mafia running the Oscars. For the last few years they’ve been produced by gay power duo Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, this year’s ceremony was hosted by Ellen Degeneres, and now it’s been announced that Neil Patrick Harris will take over those duties on February 22nd, 2015.
He is a fairly obvious choice, having become the go to guy for many of the other major ceremonies, including the Tonys, where for the last four years he’s beaten out the Oscars for the Outstanding Special Class Programs Emmy.
Harris has previously seemed uncertain about whether he’d want to host – although he has been part of previous ceremonies – but after Ellen Degeneres declined to come back and apparently Julia Louis-Dreyfus also passed, he agreed to take on the double-edged sword of steering the Academy Awards. Now he seems very excited about the possibility, as you can see in the announcement video below.
Zadan and Meron comment, “We are thriled to have Neil host the Oscars. We have known him his entire adult life and we have watched him explode as a great performer in feature films, television and stage. To work with him on the Oscars is the perfect storm, all of his resources and talent coming together on a global stage.”
And there he was probably thinking things couldn’t get much better than getting married.
