Universal has big plans for an interconnected monster movie universe, and in order to help kick it off properly it seems they want a big name in the hope it’ll drawn in the crowds. Variety reports that Tom Cruise is the man the studio wants, and it appears he’s interested as he’s not in talks to take the lead role.
If he does sign on, he’s likely to play a role in the projects development, with Jon Spaihts writing the script and Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan producing. The latter are in charge of building the Avengers-style monster universe, so they’ll need to make sure they get this one right.
Not too much is known about the plot, except it will of course involve the titular Mummy and will be set in the present day.
It’s expected in cinemas in 2017.
