Crush Of The Day: Beautiful Creatures’ Alden Ehrenreich

February 14, 2013 By Tim Isaac 2 Comments

Alden-Ehrenreich-slide
Beautiful Creatures has hit cinemas, introducing 23-year-old Alden Ehrenreich to a far wider audience. For a while it’s seemed like it was going to be ‘when’ rather than ‘if’ Alden hit the big time, and this movie may be his big break.

Ehrenreich was first noticed at 14, when Steven Spielberg saw him in a short film screened at a friend’s bat mitzvah. That led to numerous auditions and Francis Ford Coppola casting him in the lead role in his well received but little seen 2009 movie, Tetro. Since then he’s been in the running for some major roles, including the rebooted Spider-man and Hunger Games, before landing the male lead in Beautiful Creatures.

He’ll also been seen soon in Stoker, alongside Mia Wasikowska, Matthew Goode and Nicole Kidman, while later in the year he’ll pop up in Running Wild and Blue Jasmine.

I thought it was well worth gathering some images together of the cute young man, although he needs more shirtless roles, as he looks like he’s got a bit of cub chest fur going on that we need to see more of! [Read more…]

New Beautiful Creatures Trailer – Alice Englert heads for Southern gothic fantasy

November 16, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s getting a bit witchy in the Deep South in Beautiful Creatures, with a young woman (Alice Englert) knowing that she’s a ‘caster’ and that on her 18th birthday she’ll be claimed for either the powers of dark or light. Based on Kami Garcia’s novel.

Beautiful Creatures is about two star-crossed teenage lovers: Ethan (Alden Ehrenreich), a local boy, and a mysterious new girl, Lena (Alice Englert), who uncover dark secrets about their respective families, their history and their town, which could result in a power shift towards the forces of darkness. Beautiful Creatures is the first of a five book series, so the Warner Bros. will be hoping the movie is a success so they can line up some sequels.

The cast also includes Emma Thompson, Emmy Rossum, Jeremy Irons and Viola Davis. It hits cinemas on February 13th 2013. It certainly looks like it could be pretty good, with a strong cast who can sell the more far-fetched aspects of the plot.

Dane DeHaan, Brady Corbet Or Alden Ehrenreich May Be Harry Osborn In Amazing Spider-man 2

November 15, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The news came in a couple of days ago that Sony is planning to start shooting The Amazing Spider-man 2 early next year and so director Marc Webb needs to get new cast members lined up as quickly as he can. It’s long been rumoured that Harry Osborn would show up in the second movie, and now that’s been confirmed with THR reporting that actors such as Dane DeHaan (Chronicle), Brady Corbet (Melancholia), and Alden Ehrenreich (Beautiful Creatures) are trying out for the part later this week.

The role was apparently originally crafted for a bulkier, more athletic looking actor, but now it’s being revamped to have a more “dark and edgy” feel. In this take on the Spider-man legend Osborn will be a college kid who becomes friends with Peter Parker. Of course Osborn is the son of Norman Osborn (aka Green Goblin), but it’s not known if pops will show up in this movie.

Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone are returning as Peter and Gwen Stacy, with Oscar nominee Shailene Woodley (The Descendants) confirmed to play Mary Jane Watson. Jamie Foxx has also been rumoured to play the villain Electro.

First Beautiful Creatures Pic Debuts

May 5, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

With the success of Twilight and The Hunger Games, everyone in Hollywood is looking for the next young adult franchise that will break the bank. One that’s hoping to do just that is Beautiful Creatures, which started shooting recently. Now the first picture from the film has debuted, courtesy of EW (and fans of The Secret Circle might notice a similarity to one of the key moments in the opening episode of that series).

The image doesn’t really give much of a hint at the supernatural elements, but Beautiful Creatures is about two star-crossed teenage lovers, Ethan (Alden Ehrenreich), a local boy, and a mysterious new girl, Lena (Alice Englert), who uncover dark secrets about their families, their history and their town, involving a long-standing curse and supernatural powers Lena possesses. Jeremy Irons, Viola Davis, Emma Thompson, Emmy Rossum and Thomas Mann will also star. The movie is based on the first of a hugely popular series written by authors Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl.

The film is set for release February 2013.

Alden Ehrenreich Takes On Beautiful Creatures

April 12, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s one down for Blighty, as Eden Lake, This Is England and Harry Brown actor Jack O’Connell is no longer taking the lead male role in the young adult adaptation, Beautiful Creatures, as Variety reports he’s been replaced by Alden Ehrenreich. O’Connell apparently left due to scheduling conflicts.

A coming of age story set in the South, Beautiful Creatures – which is the first of a hugely popular series written by authors Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl – is about two star-crossed teenage lovers, Ethan (Alden Ehrenreich), a local boy, and a mysterious new girl, Lena (Alice Englert), who uncover dark secrets about their families, their history and their town. Jeremy Irons, Viola Davis, Emma Thompson, Emmy Rossum and Thomas Mann will also star.

Ehrenreich is best known for Francis Ford Copolla’s Tetro, and has been a finalist foor many major roles, including Spider-man and The Hunger Games. Richard LaGravenese (P.S. I Love You) will direct from his own screeplay, with shooting scheduled to begin later this month.

Michel Pitt & Paul Dano Testing For Akira

November 21, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

It seems that after a hell of a lot of behind-the-scenes issues, Warner’s live-action version of Akira is finally going to go into production. However before that they need to sort out a cast, which is proving surprisingly tricky. After much machinations over who would play the main role of Kaneda, they finally settled on Garett Hedlund, and now it appears they’re hard at work looking for Kaneda’s friend, Tetsuo.

According to THR, a whole host of actors are testing for the role, including Michael Pitt (Boardwalk Empire), Paul Dano (Cowboys & Aliens, There Will Be Blood), Alden Ehrenreich (Tetro), D.J. Cotrona (Detroit 1-8-7, G.I.Joe 2: Retaliation), Logan Marshal Green (Devil, Prometheus), Toby Kebbell (RocknRolla, Control), Richard Madden (Game of Thrones), and Rami Malek (The Pacific, Twilight: Breaking Dawn – Part 2).

The film sees Kaneda trying to rescue Tetsuo from dangerous government experiments that are attempting to harness Tetsuo’s latent powers. However those telekinetic powers are also capable of unleashing the powerful being known as Akira.

It’s an interesting list of actors they’re testing and rather diverse, so doesn’t really give us much of a hint as to the direction they’re heading with the movie, other than that as all those actors are in their late 20s, Tetsuo is going to be older than the teen of the original manga and anime. A decision on who to hire should be made soon, with shooting starting on the Jaume Collet-Serra directed movie early in the new year.
