One Direction’s Harry Styles Offered Feature Debut In Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk

March 13, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

harry-stylesAfter One Direction split-up/took an extended break (I thought I’d add the latter in case you’re too traumatised to think they might not get back together) most expected that Harry Styles would concentrate on a solo career. However, it looks like he’s got acting in his sights, as Deadline reports he’s been offered a role in Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk.

Nolan seems to be very busy casting, as the news comes hot on the heels of reports that newcomer Fionn Whitehead is currently the top choice for the lead role, with Jack Lowden and Aneurin Barnard also in talks. Mark Rylance, Kenneth Branagh and Tom Hardy are already onboard. It’s not known however who any of them would play.

The movie will centre around the Dunkirk evacuation, which occurred in May 1940, when Belgian, British, and French soldiers in Northern France were cut off and surrounded by the German Army. It was a giant military disaster – something even Winston Churchill acknowledged in a speech in the House Of Commons – with hundreds of thousands of men trapped, with the German Army on one side and the sea on the other. A massive evacuation was put into operation, with Naval vessels joined by an armada of ‘little ships’, such as fishing boats, small ferries, tourist boats, lifeboats and merchant marine craft, which braved the seas and German guns in order to help rescue over 300,000 men.

The evacuation is one of the most incredible stories of the war – an event which could have allowed the Germans to win if the men had not been saved. Nolan’s movie will be released July 21st, 2017.

Cilla (DVD Review)

October 14, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Sheridan Smith, Aneurin Barnard, Ed Stoppard, John Henshaw
Director: Paul Whittington
Running Time: 124 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: October 6th 2014 (UK)

We don’t see Cilla Black too much anymore since she entered semi-retirement. However anyone who was around in the UK in the 1980s will know her from shows such as Blind Date and Surprise Surprise, and they may also remember that before she was a TV host she was a singer. However only those who can recall the heyday of the Beatles are likely to know much about that part of her story.

The three-part mini-series Cilla takes us back to the days when she was Cilla White (Sheridan Smith), a rock ‘n’ roll obsessed Liverpudlian teenager, who was friends with a pre-Beatles Ringo Starr, headed down to The Cavern Club whenever she got the chance and had parents who were proud that she was the first member of the family deemed good enough for office work. The Facility (DVD)

May 8, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Alex Reid, Aneurin Barnard, Chris Larkin, Steve Evets, Jack Doolan
Director: Ian Clark
Running Time: 79 mins
Certificate: 18
Release Date: May 6th 2013

A group of people head for a secluded clinic to take part in a medical trial, with the promise that if they stay for two weeks, they’ll get £2,000. After being introduced they’re taken off at hourly intervals to be given the drug, Pro9, and are then left to get to know one another.

That night the side-effects turn out to be far more dramatic than expected. The first of the guinea pigs to be given the drug is found doubled-over in pain and is taken off by the medics. Some time later, a second participant starts screaming. It soon becomes clear that the drug has extreme side-effects, which essentially turn people into unconscious psycho-killers, who are more than willing to inflict violence on those who get in the way. As the other patients realise escape is going to be difficult, they also know that everyone who’s been given the drug is potentially going to go off their rocker too, and the only reason more haven’t already turned is due to the hour-long gaps between the administrations of the first dose.
