Film Stars Don’t Die In Liverpool (Blu-ray Review) – They’re also only a little bit bi, apparently

March 23, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Jamie Bell, Annette Bening, Stephen Graham, Julie Walters, Kenneth Cranham
Director: Paul McGuigan
Running Time: 105 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: March 19th 2018 (UK)

In the late 1940s and 1950s Gloria Grahame was a big name Hollywood actress, known for the likes of The Big Heat (1953) and Oklahoma! (1955), as well as winning an Oscar for The Bad and the Beautiful (1952). However, her star power soon faltered.

Film Stars Don’t Die In Liverpool picks up her story in the 1970s, by which time Grahame (Annette Bening) is appearing in theatre in Britain. The older star meets the much younger Peter Turner (Jamie Bell), with a May-December romance developing. Grahame is flattered by the attentions of the younger man, while Turner is impressed by his beau’s celebrity – something that’s beguiling and exotic for a working-class Liverpudlian lad. Film Stars Don’t Die In Liverpool Trailer – Jamie Bell & Annette Bening discover what happens after stardom

September 4, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

What happens after you’ve been world-famous in Hollywood, but nobody remembers you anymore? That’s the central idea behind Film Stars Don’t Die In Liverpool, based on the true story of Gloria Grahame, and featuring a great cast including Annette Bening, Jamie Bell, Julie Walters, Vanessa Redgrave, Kenneth Cranham, Stephen Graham, Frances Barber and Leanne Best.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Liverpool, 1978: What starts as a vibrant affair between a legendary femme fatale and her young lover quickly grows into a deeper relationship, with Turner being the person Gloria turns to for comfort. Their passion and lust for life is tested to the limits by events beyond their control. Gloria Grahame was a Hollywood leading lady at the heart of several hit films from the Golden Age of Hollywood, including The Big Heat, It’s a Wonderful Life, In a Lonely Place, and Oklahoma! She won the Academy Award® for Best Supporting Actress for her role in The Bad and the Beautiful.’

The film’s European premiere will be at the BFI London Film Festival at the May Fair Hotel Gala on Wednesday October 11th, with a general UK cinema release set for November 17th, 2017. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

20th Century Women Trailer – Annette Bening, Greta Gerwig & Elle Fanning head for 1979

September 27, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

20th-century-womenMike Mills last film was the touching Beginners, about a man (Ewan McGregor) shocked by the revelation that his ageing father (Christopher Plummer) is gay. Now he’s back with 20th Century Women, which takes us back to the 1970s.

New Girl Most Likely Trailer – Kristen Wiig and Darren Criss get quirky

May 3, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Kristen Wiig’s passion project, Girl Most Likely (previously known as Imogene) is heading for cinemas this July, and now a new trailer has dropped to give us a taste of its quirky sense of humour.

Wiig plays Imogene, who stages a fake suicide in the hope of winning back her ex. However her plan works a bit too well, as everyone thinks she really was trying to kill herself and so they put her in the custody of her gambling addict mother (Annette Bening). Imogene is thrust back into a life she hoped she’d left behind, but discovers that perhaps the things she’s shunned are just what she needs.

Darren Criss, Matt Dillon and Natasha Lyonne also star.

Girl Most Likely (Imogene) Trailer – Darren Criss gets shirtless in Kristen Wiig’s latest

March 4, 2013 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Kristen Wiig’s latest, Girl Most Likely (aka Imogene) debuted last September at the Toronto International Film Festival, but it doesn’t reach the US until July and no UK date is currently set at all. Nevertheless we’ve now got a trailer, giving us a look at the quirky indie comedy.

Plus she meets Glee’s Darren Criss, who very kindly gets shirtless for us in the trailer, which certainly ensures this is worth a look. [Read more…]

The Kids Are All Right (Blu-ray)

October 31, 2011 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Annette Bening, Julianne Moore, Mark Ruffalo, Mia Wasikowska, Josh Hutcherson
Director: Lisa Cholodenko
Running Time: 101 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: 21st March, 2010

What a confusing movie The Kids Are All Right is. Kids with two mothers? What craziness! Whoever heard of such as thing! And it has two women living in the same house, both of whom have fathered a child by the same sperm donor! Nuttiness.

At one point, when Julianne Moore was under the bed covers between Annette Bening’s legs, I even thought they were trying to suggest these two mothers were having some sort of sexual relationship, but then I heard a strange buzzing sound coming from down there and realised Moore must have just lost her cell phone or something.
