Truth Trailer – Robert Redford & Cate Blanchett cause a news scandal

‘Rather-gate’ didn’t rock the rest of the world quite the same way it did in the US, but it still had profound effects for all of us, as it helped shape the US Presidential election that saw George W. Bush win a second time.

Now it’s been made into a movie, starring Robert Redford and Cate Blanchett, and the trailer has arrived.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘TRUTH is based on the book “Truth and Duty” by Mary Mapes. In the vein of “All The President’s Men” and “The Insider,” it is the incredible true story of Mary Mapes (played by Cate Blanchet), an award-winning CBS News Journalist and Dan Rather’s producer, who broke the Abu-Ghraib prison abuse story, among others. The film chronicles the story Mapes and Rather uncovered that a sitting US president may have been AWOL from the United States National Guard for over a year during the Vietnam War. When the story blew up in their face, the ensuing scandal ruined Dan Rather’s career, nearly changed a US Presidential election, and almost took down all of CBS News in the process.’

New Carol Trailer – Cate Blanchett falls for Rooney Mara in the lesbian-themed Cannes hit

Carol was a massive success at Cannes, with many tipping it for a major awards run at the beginning of next year. Todd Haynes’ beautiful 1950s set drama will receive its UK Premiere on Wednesday 14 October at the Odeon Leicester Square as the 59th BFI London Film Festival’s American Express Gala, attended by Todd Haynes, Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara.

With tickets for that event going on sale September 10th, Studiocanal has released a new UK trailer.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘A young woman in her 20s, Therese Belivet (Rooney Mara) is a clerk working in a Manhattan department store and dreaming of a more fulfilling life when she meets Carol (Cate Blanchett), an alluring woman trapped in a loveless, convenient marriage. As an immediate connection sparks between them, the innocence of their first encounter dims and their connection deepens.

Cate Blanchett Takes On Lucille Ball Biopic, With Aaron Sorkin Writing

Aaron Sorkin must have got a taste for biopics as, after The Social Network and the upcoming Steve Jobs, he’s taking on a movie about US TV comedy legend Lucille Ball, which THR reports has Cate Blanchett set to star.

It seems a great mix of actor and writer for the movie (although it should be not Sorkin has officially signed to script the film next), which has been authorised by Ball’s family, and will have her children, Lucie Arnaz and Desi Arnaz Jr., as producers.

There’s little info on whether the film will cover all of Ball’s life or a specific period, but she’s certainly long overdue a biopic, as she is arguably the biggest US TV star ever, thanks to I Love Lucy, The Lucy–Desi Comedy Hour, The Lucy Show, Here’s Lucy and Life with Lucy. She was also very active behind the scenes, with her Desilu Studios (which she co-founded with her husband, Desi Arnaz), having been involved with the likes of Star Trek and Mission: Impossible.

Carol Teaser Trailer – The lesbian-themed Cate Blanchett starrer will also get a London Film Festival gala

After receiving huge amounts of positive buzz at the Cannes film festival (with some suggesting it could be a strong runner in the Oscar race), Carol is gearing up for release later this year. Something that will help keep it in people’s minds if the fact it’s been announced that Todd Haynes’ beautiful 1950s set drama will screen as the American Express Gala and the 59th BFI London Film Festival.

The film will receive its UK Premiere on Wednesday 14th October at the Odeon Leicester Square, attended by Academy Award nominated director Todd Haynes and the film’s stars Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara.

‘While Carol breaks free from the confines of marriage, her husband (Kyle Chandler) threatens her competence as a mother when Carol’s involvement with Therese and close relationship with her best friend Abby (Sarah Paulson) comes to light. Cate Blanchett’s Lesbian-Themed Drama Carol Tipped For Cannes Palm d’Or

There have been mixed fortunes for films at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, with Gus Van Sant’s Sea Of Trees, starring Matthew McConaughey, being met with boos, while Todd Haynes’ lesbian-themed Carol, starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, is getting huge buzz.

Variety is already saying the film may be one of the frontrunners at next year’s Oscar, remaking that early reaction to the movie ‘were some of the strongest of the 2015 Cannes Film Festival’.

Many are backing that sentiment, with Sasha Stone of Awards Daily commenting, “Weinstein is right in saying ‘Carol’ has the stuff. I think Hollywood will finally give Haynes the directing nod he so richly deserves. Rooney’s movie as much as Blanchett’s. Exceptional in every respect.”

Indiewire’s Anne Thompson meanwhile tweeted, “Blanchett & Mara carry Todd Haynes’ 50s lesbian romance Carol with glamorous allure. Strong contender for awards @cannes15 & beyond.”

The BBC meanwhile says the movie is ‘tipped for Cannes glory’.

While the film has been getting a brilliant response, Blanchett herself has stepped forward to clarify comments that many (incuding ourselves) took to suggest she was bisexual.

In a piece published in Variety last week, when asked about whether she had had relationships with women, Cate answered “Yes. Many times.” However it turns out this wasn’t all she said.

At a Cannes press conference she noted, “From memory, the conversation ran, ‘Have you had relationships with women?’ And I said, ‘Yes, many times. If you mean I’ve had sexual relationships with them, the answer is ‘No’ – but that obviously didn’t make it to print.

“Call me old-fashioned but I thought one’s job as an actor was not to present one’s boring, small, microscopic universe but to make a psychological connection to another character’s experiences. My own life is of no interest to anyone else. Or maybe it is. But I certainly have no interest in putting my own thoughts and opinions out there.”

Carol Film Clips – First look at Cate Blanchett & Mia Wasikowska in the lesbian-themed movie

After over a decade in the works, the film version of Patricia Highsmith’s The Price Of Salt, Carol, is due to debut at Cannes. To tie in to that a couple of clips from the lesbian-themed movie have popped up online, which you can watch below.

The movie is about the relationship between two women in 1950s New York. One is a young department store clerk, Therese (Rooney Mara), who dreams of a better life, and the other is the older Carol (Cate Blanchett), who is trapped in a loveless marriage. However Carol’s husband (Kyle Chandler) begins to suspect what is happening. Playwright Phyllis Nagy wrote the screenplay adaptation.

Todd Haynes, known for previous LGBT-themed work such as Velvet Goldmine and Far From Heaven, directs. He previously worked with Blanchett on his unusual 2007 Bob Dylan biopic, I’m Not There.

Cate Blanchett Coyly Suggests That She’s Bisexual

Cate Blanchett isn’t one to go into great detail about herself. In a new Variety profile about her role in the upcoming film Carol, she doesn’t even want to talk about how she prepares for a part, merely saying, “Do I have a process? I don’t know. There are certainly things perhaps that I don’t want to identify.”

However when talking about the fact Carol is her first lesbian role, she does suggest that perhaps she’s not completely new to relationships with women, as when asked about this being her first time, she answers, “On film – or in real life?”

When pressed on whether this means she has had relationships with women in the past (she is currently married to a man), she doesn’t have a huge amount more to add, but does say, “Yes. Many times.”

It seems she doesn’t have a time for labels, as she says that when considering what her character in the film would be considered, she says “I never thought about it. I don’t think Carol thought about it.”

The long-gestating Carol is an adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s 1952 novella The Price of Salt, which follows the relationship between two women in 1950s New York.One is a young department store clerk (Mia Wasikowska) who dreams of a better life, and the other is a woman (Blanchett) trapped in a loveless marriage. Playwright Phyllis Nagy wrote the screenplay adaptation.

Todd Haynes, known for previous LGBT-themed work such as Velvet Goldmine and Far From Heaven, directs. He previously worked with Blanchett on his unusual 2007 Bob Dylan biopic, I’m Not There.

It’s well worth reading the full Variety piece, which talks about how Carol got to the screen, this history of Highsmith’s book (which was controversial enough on its initial release that she wrote it under a pseudonym), as well as the issue of both female and gay centred stories in mainstream cinema.

Cinderella (Cinema Review)

After the success of Maleficent (2014) it’s little surprise that Disney is remaking some of their classic animated stories as live action movies. In a few years we will also have Beauty And The Beast and Tim Burton’s Dumbo (complete with a Danny Elfman soundtrack) and one day hopefully a version of Snow White where Peter Dinklage plays all the dwarfs.

To be honest though any studio can do these films as the stories are public domain (although Disney does like to bring in elements they have exclusive rights to due to them first appearing in their animated versions).

However what the other studios don’t have is the Disney magic. [Read more…]

New Cinderella Trailer – Lily James & Richard Madden only have until midnight

In a few weeks time Disney will be unleashing it’s live-action take on Cinderella on the world, and it’ll be hoping it can really build some hype following an underwhelming response to the first couple of trailer.

To help with that, they’ve unleashed a new promo.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘A live-action feature inspired by the classic fairy tale, “Cinderella” brings to life the timeless images from Disney’s 1950 animated masterpiece as fully-realized characters in a visually-dazzling spectacle for a whole new generation.

‘The story of “Cinderella” follows the fortunes of young Ella (Lily James) whose merchant father remarries following the death of her mother. Eager to support her loving father, Ella welcomes her new stepmother (Cate Blanchett) and her daughters Anastasia (Holliday Grainger) and Drisella (Sophie McShera) into the family home. But, when Ella’s father unexpectedly passes away, she finds herself at the mercy of a jealous and cruel new family. Finally relegated to nothing more than a servant girl covered in ashes, and spitefully renamed Cinderella, Ella could easily begin to lose hope. Yet, despite the cruelty inflicted upon her, Ella is determined to honor her mother’s dying words and to “have courage and be kind.” She will not give in to despair nor despise those who mistreat her. And then there is the dashing stranger she meets in the woods. Unaware that he is really a prince, not merely an apprentice at the Palace, Ella finally feels she has met a kindred soul. New Cinderella Trailer – Fresh look at Lily James & Richard Madden in a more magical fairy tale

A few weeks ago the main trailer for Disney’s live action Cinderella emerged, but there was a bit of problem – for a film based on a fairy tale, it didn’t look that magical. Indeed it looked like despite his success with Thor, director Kenneth Branagh may have returned to the somewhat journeyman role that’s hampered quite a few of his movies.

However now a new trailer has emerged via Disney New Zealand, which suggest there will indeed be a bit of enchantment in the film, even if most of comes from CGI.
