New Mary Magdalene Trailer – Rooney Mara stars as Jesus’ infamous follower

February 17, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Who is Mary Magdalene? She’s probably best known for being a prostitute – although the problem with that is that it doesn’t actually say she was in The Bible. Her lady of the night reputation came along much later. More recently Dan Brown decided she was Jesus’ wife. But who was she really?

Well, a new movie seems keen to give a different take on her, presenting her closer to being a bit of a revolutionary.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘MARY MAGDALENE is an authentic and humanistic portrait of one of the most enigmatic and misunderstood spiritual figures in history. The biblical biopic tells the story of Mary (Rooney Mara), a young woman in search of a new way of living. Constricted by the hierarchies of the day, Mary defies her traditional family to join a new social movement led by the charismatic Jesus of Nazareth (Joaquin Phoenix). She soon finds a place for herself within the movement and at the heart of a journey that will lead to Jerusalem.’

Mary Magdalene is released in the UK on March 16th 2018. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

A Ghost Story Trailer – Casey Affleck & Rooney Mara star in David Lowery’s Sundance success

March 28, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Ain’t Them Bodies Saints helmer David Lowery went full-on Hollywood last year with a reimagining of Disney’s Pete’s Dragon. After that though he’s snuck in something rather more low-key, A Ghost Story, which got a tremendous reception when it debuted at Sundance.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Prematurely taken from this Earth, a spectral figure who was once a man (Casey Affleck) makes his way toward his former home, where he is fated to remain forevermore. Shrouded in a white sheet, he observes the lament of his grief-stricken lover (Rooney Mara). Bearing unseen witness to her pain, the wisp stands sentry for years to come, interacting only with time as it hurtles further and further forward, the remnants of his humanity quietly evaporating.’

The trailer for the movie has now arrived, which you can see below. It should be in cinemas this summer. [Read more…]

February 23, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Recently Robert Redford he intends to retire completely from in front of the camera, but before then he’s decided to go into the afterlife with The Discovery. It certainly sounds like it could be an interesting one.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘What would you do if there was proof of an afterlife? His estranged son, Will (Jason Segel), tries to confront the situation by returning to the New England–esque island where he grew up. He crosses paths with Isla (Rooney Mara), who’s returning to the island for mysterious reasons of her own. The tale unfolds over the ensuing days as the regret of past choices forces these lost characters to reflect on how they’ve gotten to where they are.’

Carol (Blu-ray Review)

March 20, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara, Kyle Chandler, Sarah Paulson
Director: Todd Haynes
Running Time: 118 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: March 21st 2016 (UK)

Todd Haynes 2002 movies Far From Heaven was a very deliberate homage to the ‘women’s films’ of the 1950s made by the likes of Douglas Sirk. As with his HBO mini-series Mildred Pierce, Carol is set in decades past, but eschews the high gloss of Far From Heaven, instead being more interested in looking at how society was through the eyes of society today, but done in a style as if you really were there.

The film follows Carol Aird (Cate Blanchett), whose marriage is in the process of imploding when she meets charming shop assistant Therese (Rooney Mara) in a Department Store. They both sense a connection which slowly builds as they meet for lunch and then Carol invites Therese to spend the day with her in her country house. [Read more…]

Carol & Tangerine Lead LGBT-Themed Independent Spirit Awards Nominations

November 24, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

carol-cate-blanchett-rooney-maraThe Independent Spirit Awards Nominations have been released, and it’s not too surprising that leading the way is Todd Haynes lesbian-themed Carol lead the way with six nods. As many expect the films to make a good showing at the Oscar, it was also bound to do well with the US’s leading Indie gongs.

The movie, which reaches UK cinemas this Friday (November 27th), follows Cate Blanchett’s title character, a married woman who embarks on an affair with younger shop assistant Therese (Rooney Mara). Ever since its Cannes debut the movie has been winning huge amounts of praise, which continues here. You can read our review here.

Carol wasn’t the only LGBT-themed movie that did well, as the micro-budget Tangerine picked up four nomination, for Best Feature, Best Director, Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress. It marks the first time a female trans woman has been nominated in the Best Actress category (Harmony Santana was the first trans nominee, in the Best Supporting Actress category in 2012).

Kitana Kiki Rodriguez is the one with the Best Actress nom, while the excellent Mya Taylor is honoured in the Best Supporting Actress category.

While earlier in the year it looked like other indie LGBT movies such as Freeheld and About Ray might get some awards love, lukewarm critical reaction and the fact they’ve been shut out from the Independent Spiritt Awards – the one place they’d get noms even if they were ignored elsewhere – suggests that won’t be happening.

Take a look below for the full list on Independent Spirit Award nominees: [Read more…]

Carol (Cinema Review)

November 24, 2015 By Mike Martin Leave a Comment

Starring: Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara, Sarah Paulson, Kyle Chandler
Director: Todd Haynes
Running Time: 118 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: November 27th 2015 (UK)

If Far From Heaven was Todd Haynes’ love letter to director Douglas Sirk, this is his tribute to painter Edward Hopper. Whatever the flaws of his film – more of which later – it is probably the best-looking movie of 2015. Meticulously reimagining the New York of the 1950s it has shot after shot of its protagonists exquisitely framed, gorgeously coloured and superbly dressed.

Several moments are worth pausing and gazing at for hours, especially one amazing shot of a grey, drab New York street lifted by the bright red coat and hat of the ethereal Cate Blanchett striding along. The interiors are gloomy, the exteriors washed out and tired-looking. Hopper would be impressed.

It received a standing ovation at Cannes and has been held back to coincide with Oscars season, during which it will probably clean up. However… [Read more…]

September 9, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment
