New Mary Magdalene Trailer – Rooney Mara stars as Jesus’ infamous follower

February 17, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Who is Mary Magdalene? She’s probably best known for being a prostitute – although the problem with that is that it doesn’t actually say she was in The Bible. Her lady of the night reputation came along much later. More recently Dan Brown decided she was Jesus’ wife. But who was she really?

Well, a new movie seems keen to give a different take on her, presenting her closer to being a bit of a revolutionary.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘MARY MAGDALENE is an authentic and humanistic portrait of one of the most enigmatic and misunderstood spiritual figures in history. The biblical biopic tells the story of Mary (Rooney Mara), a young woman in search of a new way of living. Constricted by the hierarchies of the day, Mary defies her traditional family to join a new social movement led by the charismatic Jesus of Nazareth (Joaquin Phoenix). She soon finds a place for herself within the movement and at the heart of a journey that will lead to Jerusalem.’

Mary Magdalene is released in the UK on March 16th 2018. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

Doctor Strange (Cinema Review)

October 25, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Tilda Swinton
Director: Scott Derrickson
Running Time: 115 mins
Certificate: 12A
Release Date: 25th October 2016 (UK)

Here we are with the 14th film in the ever expanding and ultra-successful MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe). This entry has been touted to be a turning point in the series, just as Thor (2011) introduced aliens and the nine realms; Doctor Strange introduces the Marvel multiverse – a key narrative trope of the comics which essentially means there are infinite versions of worlds and characters just ripe for the picking.

This long awaited entry tells the story of the brilliant but arrogant Doctor Stephen Strange (a well-cast Benedict Cumberbatch), who after a car accident suffers severe nerve damage in his hands. He goes on a journey to heal himself which leads to a temple in Nepal, where he meets The Ancient One (Tilda Swinton), learns of the mystic arts and sorcery, and is put on a path to save the day from a being that threatens the entire planet. New Doctor Strange Trailer – Benedict Cumberbatch may have made the weirdest Marvel movie yet

July 24, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

DOCTOR-STRANGE-PAYOFF-POSTER-slideIf this trailer is anything to go by, Marvel is meeting Inception with Doctor Strange, and Benedict Cumberbatch is going to have a slightly odd American accent. It does look pretty cool – if strange – though.

Cumberbatch plays Stephen Vincent Strange, a former neurosurgeon who becomes the next Sorcerer Supreme and primary protector of Earth against magical and mystical threats. Tilda Swinton will play Strange’s mentor, the Ancient One, while Chiwetel Ejiofor will appear as Baron Mordo, who also studies magic under the Ancient One, before becoming Doctor Strange’s nemesis. Mads Mikelsen is also onboard to play one of the main villains, as you will see in the trailer, while Rachel McAdams is Christine Palmer.

Scott Derrickson is directing the movie. It’ll be in cinemas November 2016. [Read more…]

Triple 9 (Blu-ray Review)

June 28, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Casey Affleck, Aaron Paul Kate Winslet, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Anthony Mackie
Director: John Hillcoat
Running Time: 115 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: June 27th 2016 (UK)

As the cast came together for Triple 9, it couldn’t help but feel this was going to be one hell of a movie. With the director of The Road and Lawless behind the camera, and a cast including Casey Affleck, Aaron Paul Kate Winslet, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Anthony Mackie, Gal Gadot, Norman Reedus, Teresa Palmer, Clifton Collins Jr. and Woody Harrelson, it certainly has plenty of pedigree.

However, the result is a rather overstuffed movie, which, as with many of its forebears, confuses grimness with authenticity, and people being miserable and unpleasant to one another with reality. Indeed, there are moments when objectively it’s about as realistic as Lord Of The Rings, but has such a determined po-face that it might convince you otherwise. [Read more…]

Z For Zachariah Trailer – Margot Robbie, Chris Pine & Chiwetel Ejiofor go post-nuclear

June 4, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

z-for-zachariah-posterFor many years Z For Zachariah was a staple of school classroom, but it’s only now, long after the nuclear fears that ignited it, that it’s coming to the big screen. And a few changes have been made, not least upping the age of the female lead character to avoid the slight creepy edge of the relationship between a teen girl and a grown man in Robert C. O’Brien’s book.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘In the wake of a nuclear war, a young woman (Margot Robbie) survives on her own, fearing she may actually be the proverbial last woman on earth, until she discovers the most astonishing sight of her life: another human being. A distraught scientist (Chiwetel Ejiofor), he’s nearly been driven mad by radiation exposure and his desperate search for others. A fragile, imperative strand of trust connects them. But when a stranger (Chris Pine) enters the valley, their precarious bond begins to unravel.’

The film will be out in the US in August, but no UK date is currently set. [Read more…]

Chiwetel Ejiofor Courted For Marvel’s Doctor Strange

January 24, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Chiwetel-EjioforIt looks like the excellent Chiwetel Ejiofor may be joining the Marvel Universe, as THR reports that he’s being courted for a major role in Doctor Strange, although it’s not 100% what that role might be. It’s certainly not a done deal yet as they’re only in early talks, but it appears clear Marvel wants him to star alongside Benedict Cumberbatch’s title character.

The current speculation is that he’d play Doctor Strange’s mentor, the Ancient One, although it’s also possible he may be up for a more villainous role.

Scott Derrickson is set to direct the movie which follows the title character, Doctor Strange, who is a former neurosurgeon, a practicing sorcerer, and serves as the Sorcerer Supreme, the primary protector of Earth against magical and mystical threats.

A July 8th, 2016 release date has been set.

Kate Winslet Scores Triple Nine For Director John Hillcoat

February 5, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

kate-winsletKate Winslet may have missed out on an Oscar nomination for Labor Day (although she got a Golden Globe nod), but she’s still hot property, and may find a whole new fanbase if the movie version of Divergent is as popular as some expect when it’s released in March.

While she’s likely to be shooting the Divergent sequel, Insurgent, later this year, she’s also lined up another role, as Variety reports she’ll star in John Hillcoat’s (Lawless, The Proposition) Triple Nine. She joins the previously cast Casey Affleck and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

The movie is about a group of criminals who plan on murdering an LAPD cop (Casey Affleck), as they think this will divert attention away from the massive heist they are planning on the other side of town. Ejiofor will be the criminal mastermind behind the whole operation. It’s not clear who Winslet will play.

‘Triple nine’ is police code for when an officer needs immediate assistance.

12 Years A Slave Trailer – Chiwetel Ejiofor, Benedict Cumberbatch & Brad Pitt take on an incredible true story

July 16, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Now here’s a film that’s definitely hoping to be in the Oscar race. 12 Years a Slave is based on a fascinating and Oscar-worthy story, and also has a great cast including Chiwetel Ejiofor, Benedict Cumberbatch, Michael Fassbender, John Ridley. Brad Pitt, Paul Dano, Sarah Paulson, Scoot McNairy, Garret Dillahunt and Alfre Woodard. And with Shame’s Steven McQueen directing, perhaps we should just give it the awards right now.

The movie is based on the true story of Solomon Northrup (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a free black man in the mid-19th Century who was kidnapped in Washington and sold into slavery. He was rescued from a Louisiana cotton plantation in 1853.

It’s due in cinemas at the end of the year, but take a look at the riveting trailer below. [Read more…]
