Adam McKay Directing Uptown Saturday Night

April 27, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Adam McKay normally only directs movie starring his professional partner, Will Ferrell, but now it seems he’s thinking of leaving Will behind for a bit, as he’s in negotiations to direct a remake of Uptown Saturday Night. David Dobkin was once attached to the project, but is no longer involved.

Last March, Warner Bros. was eyeing Will Smith and Denzel Washington to star. No deals have been made either actor yet, but Deadline reports that Warner Bros. is still hoping to land both actors (and as Will Smith’s production company is involved, there’s a good chance he’ll be onboard). The original Uptown Saturday Night starred Bill Cosby and Sidney Poitier as two friends who give up their wallets to thieves. They realise that one of the wallets contains a winning lottery ticket, and go on a quest to retrieve it.

If he signs on, McKay wants to start shooting the remake after he wraps on Anchorman 2, which will likely start shooting in the first quarter of 2013.

Paula Patton Joins Washington & Wahlberg in 2 Guns

April 10, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol star Paula Patton is one of those actresses who constantly seems to flit around the edge of major recognition, but never quite gets it. Now she’s adding another decent role to her belt, as Deadline reports she’s in talks to take the female lead in 2 Guns, opposite Mark Wahlberg and Denzel Washington.

The film will be directed by Baltasar Kormákur, who last worked with Mark Wahlberg on the action thriller Contraband, and is based on the Steven Grant graphic novel of the same name. Paula Patton will play the love interest of Denzel Washington’s character in this story of a DEA Agent and a Naval Officer ordered to investigate one other. It’s not the first time Patton and Washington have worked together, as they both starred in Deja Vu.

Shooting will begin later in the year on 2 Guns, after Mark Wahlberg completes filming Michael Bay’s comedic thriller Pain and Gain, as well as promoting the comedy Ted, which he stars in and is release this summer.

The Vow Romances Its Way To The Top Of The US Box Office

February 13, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The US box office can be an incredibly fickle beast that tough to predict. Many were expecting that with four major films opening against one another, they might harm each others chances. Instead all of them did well, marking only the second time in history four films have opened north of $20 million on the same weekend.

It was The Vow that really overperformed, doubling some predictions to wind up with a stellar $41 million. Many have suggested a lack of straightforward romances in the last few months and the fact it’s almost Valentine’s Day conspired to ensure The Vow got an opening that outpaced the likes of Dear John and The Notebook.

The film many had expected to lead the box office chart, Safe House, settled for second spot with $39.3 million, which was still well ahead of what many thought it might end up with. Indeed it’s more than Ryan Reynolds’ last movie, The Change Up, made in its entire North American run, and marks Denzel Washington’s second biggest opener ever behind American gangster.

Third on the chart with $27.7 million was Journey 2, which outpaced its predecessor’s $21 million opening, and nearly doubled what many had thought it would make in its first three days. The final new entry in the $20 million plus club was Star War: The Phantom Menace 3D, which took $23 million. It’s a solid start, especially considering many see it as the weakest Star Wars movie, but it’s well behind what the re-release of The Lion King made last autumn. We’ll have to see whether George Lucas thinks it’s enough to justify converting the other Star Wars flicks.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of February 10th-12th.

Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
The Vow $41.7 $41.7
Safe House $39.3 $39.3
Journey 2: The Mysterious Island $27.5 $27.5
Star Wars Episode I – The Phantom Menace 3D $23.0 $23.0
Chronicle $12.3 $40.1
The Woman In Black $10.3 $35.4
The Grey $5.0 $42.8
Big Miracle $3.9 $13.2
The Descendants $3.5 $70.7
Underworld Awakening $2.5 $58.9

Denzel Washington May Join Mark Wahlberg In 2 Guns

February 8, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Denzel Washington is always a safe bet for an action thriller, and now he’s lining another one up, as Deadline reports that he’s in talks to star in Universal Pictures graphic novel adaptation 2 Guns, for director Baltasar Kormákur (Contraband).

The slightly The Departed story centres on a DEA agent and an undercover naval officer who are ordered to investigate each other. They soon realise they’ve been double-crossed by the mob, who they were both stealing money from. Mark Wahlberg has been attached to star to star for a while, although it isn’t clear which roles Mark Wahlberg and Denzel Washington will play.

No production schedule was released for 2 Guns, but hopefully that will become clearer after the Berlin Film Festival, where the movie is looking for co-financing.

Denzel Washington Could Be The Equalizer

December 14, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

It’s been a few months since we last heard about plans to turn the 1980s Edward Woodward TV The Equalizer into a movie. Russell Crowe had been attached to tthe lead role, but it now appears he’s out and Denzel Washington is in, according to the film’s production company, Escape Artists.

Also off the project is Crash writer/director Paul Haggis, who’s been replaced in the screenwriting chair by Richard Wenk. All previous attempts to make an Equalizer movie – and there have been many – have got stuck in development hell due to differences of opinion over the tone of the movie (after all, there’s virtually no reason to make an Equalizer film, so finding a worthwhile script has always been tough), and it seems this version is have just as many issues.

The original series followed Robert McCall, who had a murky past working for an agency where he had to do terrible things. Seeking redemption, he left ‘The Company’ behind and set himself up as a private detective, each week helping those who the police can not – or will not – assist, while also dealing with his former boss and colleagues.

At the moment Washington is only loosely attached, so don’t be shocked if he bails too.

First Image & Poster From Safe House

November 3, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

It seems Denzel Washington is still as much bigger deal that Ryan Reynolds, as the first image and poster for Safe House have arrived, neither of which seem to care much that Reynolds in also in the movie. There’s little doubt they’re doing a good job of making Washington look moody!

In Safe House, a CIA-operated safe house is targeted by a group of bad guys, and the facility’s house-sitter is tasked with the dangerous job of moving the criminal who is being hidden there to another secure location, without getting either of them killed.
