Transformers: The Last Knight (Blu-ray Review) – Robots and explosions, what did you expect?

October 21, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Mark Wahlberg, Laura Haddock, Anthony Hopkins, Josh Duhamel
Director: Michael Bay
Running Time: 149 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: October 30th 2017 (UK BD/DVD), Out Now (VoD)

People often complain that the big Hollywood movies have no story. If nothing else the Transformers movies have attempted to do something about that. Rather than having no story, they have all the stories, non-stop, simultaneously and accompanied by never-ending explosions. It’s never mattered whether it made any sense or if it’s managed to contradict itself in the same sentence, as long as something is going on that appears to be a plotline.

That continues with The Last Knight, which is moderately more coherent than Dark Of The Moon, and slightly less pointless than Age Of Extinction – and yes, that is damning it with faint praise, but it does mean those who’ve liked what’s gone before, will probably enjoy this one. [Read more…]

New Transformers: The Last Knight Trailer – Michael Bay is blowing up the bots again

April 12, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

If you were wondering whether, for his last Transformers movie, Michael Bay would make a small, arthouse-style drama, this trailer is here to says that no, you were a moron to think that. Instead – and despite Bay promising changes – it’s going to be as big, bombastic and literally explosive as previous instalments.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘The Last Knight shatters the core myths of the Transformers franchise, and redefines what it means to be a hero. Humans and Transformers are at war, Optimus Prime is gone. The key to saving our future lies buried in the secrets of the past, in the hidden history of Transformers on Earth. Saving our world falls upon the shoulders of an unlikely alliance: Cade Yeager (Mark Wahlberg); Bumblebee; an English Lord (Sir Anthony Hopkins); and an Oxford Professor (Laura Haddock).

There comes a moment in everyone’s life when we are called upon to make a difference. In Transformers: The Last Knight, the hunted will become heroes. Heroes will become villains. Only one world will survive: theirs, or ours.’

The movie will be in cinemas in June. Take a look at the new trailer below. [Read more…]

Transformers: The Last Knight Extended Super Bowl Spot – And Michael Bay says again he’s leaving the franchise

February 5, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Michael Bay said he was only directing three Transformers films, but then he agreed to make a fourth. That though, he said, would definitely be the last, before he signed on to help a fifth one. However, this time he seems to really mean it, as alongside The Last Knight’s Super Bowl spot, Bay has released a statement underlining that this will be his final time as director (although he does leave the door open).

He also seems keen to suggest this film will be a bit of a departure from what’s gone before, although I’m sure that doesn’t mean he will have given up on exploding everything in site. Take a look at Bay’s statement below and the new Super Bowl spot underneath that.

I’ve been living in this franchise for over 10 years now. For Transformers: The Last Knight, we put together a writers’ room designed to greatly expand our mythology, integrating our films in a whole new way. Every movie will interlink.

It was a huge task to expand mythology from the beginning of the world throughout history. We had a great team of writers: Akiva Goldsman (A Beautiful Mind); Art Marcum & Matt Holloway (Iron Man); Ken Nolan (Black Hawk Down); Zak Penn (Ready Player One); Lindsey Beer (Barbie); Geneva RobertsonDworet (Tomb Raider); Christina Hodson (Bumblebee); Steven DeKnight (Daredevil, Smallville); Jeff Pinkner (The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Lost); and Andrew Barrer & Gabriel Ferrari (Ant-Man).

Through the summer of 2015, they worked in a huge space on the Paramount lot, surrounded by over 10,000 concept images from the franchise’s history: the movies, cartoons, and comic books. They had a life-size Bumblebee, a Megatron head, and many other props staring them down. We pulled from everything. It was a fan’s dream room.

We brought in Transformers historians from Hasbro to educate them on where Transformers has been – so that they could figure out where it can go. I can safely say that there’s never been a Transformers film with the huge visual scope and expansive mythology as this movie, The Last Knight.

It’s bittersweet for me. With every Transformers film, I’ve said it would be my last. I see the 120 million fans around the world who see these movies, the huge theme park lines to the ride and the amazing Make- A-Wish kids who visit my sets, and it somehow keeps drawing me back. I love doing these movies. This film was especially fun to shoot. But, this time might really be it. So I’m blowing this one out.

It’s a final chapter and a new beginning. Here’s the writers’ log line:

The Last Knight shatters the core myths of the Transformers franchise, and redefines what it means to be a hero.

Only one world will survive: theirs, or ours. [Read more…]

Transformers: The Last Knight Poster Suggests The Autobots May Be Fighting One Another

December 13, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It doesn’t look like things are going to be going well for the Autobots in Transformers: The Last Knight. The recent trailer showed Optimus Prime and Bumblebee fighting, and now the first poster shows Prime standing, sword in hand, standing over what looks to be the corpse of his yellow (former) friend.

Quite what’s going on between them hasn’t been announced, but with Dom going against him crew in yesterday’s Fast & Furious 8 trailer, it seems like next year there will be a lot of sequels trying to intrigue us with suggestions that who is a goodie and who’s a baddie might be changing. As the Transformers poster says, ‘Rethink Your Heroes’.

Not a huge amount if known about the plot, except that it involve time travel, and will somehow manage to bring the robots together with King Arthur, Nazis and new dinobots, with Optimus Prime needing to find an artifact on Earth that may be able to bring Cybertron back to life. So perhaps the other Autobots aren’t so keen on finding that artifacts, although the trailer suggested that whatever the object is, it’s why the bots keep ending up on Earth.

Transformers: The Last Knight Trailer – The robots are going time-travelling

December 6, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

transformers-last-knight-slideAfter watching this trailer, you can almost seen the first few meetings for the latest Transformers movie, where they were trying to figure out what the hell they were going to do, so it wouldn’t seem exactly like the previous ones. Normally when that happens with a film series, they send the characters on holiday for the next sequel, but that wouldn’t really work for Optimus Prime and co, so they’ve gone for the other standby – time-travel.

Don’t worry though, this is Michael Bay, so lots of things are still going to explode.

The trailer doesn’t tell us a vast amount about the plot, but it is known that brings the robots together with King Arthur, Nazis and new dinobots, with Optimus Prime needing to find an artifact on Earth that may be able to bring Cybertron back to life.

The movie will be out next summer. [Read more…]

Transformers: The Last Knight Featurette – First look at Michael Bay’s latest dose of robots & explosions

November 16, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

transformers-last-knight-featuretteIs there really much point us writing anything about a new Transformers movie? By now everyone who even vaguely cares knows exactly what they’re going to get. That said, they have promised this one will be a little different, with redesigned Autobot and Decepticons, but with Michael Bay still at the helm, it’s still gonna be pretty much what we expected.

He have now got our first look at the movie though, with Paramount releasing a behind the scenes featurette to talk about the film’s partnership with IMAX.

The film has a mix of old and new, with veterans Mark Wahlbers, Stanley Tucci, Josh Duhamel, John Turturro and Tyrese Gibson being joined by the likes of Anthony Hopkins and Laura Haddock. Not much is known about the plot, other than it somehow brings together the robots with King Arthur, Nazis and new dinobots, with Optimus Prime needing to find an artifact on Earth that may be able to bring Cybertron back to life. Anthony Hopkins Joins Transformers: The Last Knight

June 5, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

anthony-hopkinsShooting on Transformers: The Last Knight is kicking off just about now, but it appears there’s still some room in the cast, as the official Transformers Twitter account has tweeted that they’ve added a real Knight, Sir Anthony Hopkins. However, what they haven’t said it what the Welsh Oscar-winner will be doing in them movie.

Indeed, there’s not been much info on the plot at all. However, there has been a logo with a sword on it, and the info that Mark Wahlberg and Josh Duhamel will be back, alongside newcomers Isabela Moner and Jerrod Carmichael.

Although it seems like an unusual choice for Hopkins, who’s normally thought of as being part of more prestigious project, he’s certainly not averse to more commercial fare. Of course he was Thor’s dad Dad in the first two Thor movies, and also popped up in the likes of the 1990s Zorro movies  and 2010’s The Wolfman. He’ll soon be seen in HBO TV series based on Michael Crichton’s Westworld. [Read more…]

Michael Bay Confirms He’s Returning To Direct Transformers 5

January 5, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

michael-bayAfter the third Transformers movie, Michael Bay said he was done directing the franchise. However, then Paramount promised to fund his passion project, Pain & Gain, if he came back for a fourth outing. But according to Bay, that was definitely it.

Now things have changed again, as a couple of months ago he entered talk to direct the fifth instalment, and now he’s confirmed he’s taken the gig. He told Rolling Stone, “I’m doing Transformers … 5, is it?…Transformers, I still have a great time. It’s fun to do a movie that 100 million people will see. But this is the last one. I have to pass the reins to someone else.”

When reminded that he’s said that before, he replied. “I know. J.J. [Abrams] told me, ‘You’re the only guy that could do this.’ But it’s time to move on. One more.”

We’ll have to see whether he sticks to his word (and to be honest there are quite a few people who’d like him to step aside and give someone else a chance to see whether they can bring something a bit different to the franchise). Mark Wahlberg is also expected to return, with a 2017 release planned.

13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers Of Benghazi Trailer & Poster – Michael Bay takes on dramatic real-life events

November 4, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

13-Hours-uk-poster-slideMany people still aren’t sure that action-kingpin Michael Bay is the best man to take on the real-life events that took place in Benghazi and resulted in the death of the US ambassador. However, he’ll be hoping to prove naysayers wrong with 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers Of Benghazi.

The film, which stars John Krasinski, Dominic Fumusa, James Badge Dale, Max Martini and Pablo Schreiber, now has a new trailer and poster , which you can watch below.

The movie is based on Mitchell Zuckoff’s book, which centres on six members of a security team. After the facility came under attack from militants angered about the recently release of a trailer for an Islam-bashing film called ‘Innocence Of Muslims’ and the anniversary of 9/11. The team fought to defend the lives of the Americans in the compound, although the attack claimed the life of US Ambassador Christopher J. Stevens and a foreign service worker, while two contract workers died in a second attack at a nearby CIA facility.

It’ll be in UK cinemas on January 29th.

July 29, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

13-hours-pic1-slideMichael Bay may be known for throwaway popcorn action on a massive scale, but he’s getting a little more serious for 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi.
