Critics Hit Out At Disney Casting Straight Comedian Jack Whitehall As An ‘Effete’ Gay Man

August 15, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

As so often seems to happen with Hollywood, as it takes a step forward it also seems to be taking a step back. It’s been revealed that Disney is including its first openly gay major character in the upcoming, The Jungle Cruise, starring Dwayne Johnson.

However, there has been criticism of the fact that the person cast to pay the role is straight British comedian, Jack Whitehall. There was also dismay at reports in The Sun that the character will be, ‘hugely effete, very camp and very funny.’

Many on social media have taken umbrage at Whitehall playing the role, feeling that it should have gone to a gay actor. Many have drawn perhaps dubious comparisons to the recent anger at Scarlett Johansson briefly being cast as a transgender character, suggesting it’s a missed chance to true representation. It’s also been seen as another example of Hollywood ‘gayface’, which allows a movie to ‘play gay’ while ensuring the audience knows it’s not real, as it’s actually a straight person playing the role.

Others have been more annoyed at the news that the character will be effete and very camp, suggesting it’s once more, as Omar Sharif Jr, has put it, that is falls back on “tired stereotypes used as devices to make us laugh so we’re comfortable with otherness”. Although others have riled at this suggestion, feeling that it’s gay people ‘camp shaming’, it is perhaps more accurate that the worry is this will once more feed into Hollywood’s long history of using camp men as the punchline, and of laughing at them rather than with them.

It should also be noted that while Whtehall is straight, he is quite camp (something that he’s referenced numerous times in his stand-up), so he may not actually be playing a character too far from him own personality.

As so often with these moments of social media outrage, it’s people getting angry based on little information and before we’ve actually been able to see the movie (Jungle Cruise isn’t due in cinemas until October 2019). As things stand, Disney hasn’t even confirmed Whitehall’s character is gay, let alone that he will be immensely camp and/or used as a homophobic/misogynistic joke. As previous LGBT inclusion in Disney films, such as the ‘exclusively gay moment’ in last year’s Beauty And The Beast, turned out to be damp squibs, this may turn out to be a storm in a teacup.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (Blu-ray Review) – A game (and gender-swap) like no other

April 30, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Dwayne Johnson, Karen Gillan, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Nick Jonas
Director: Jake Kasdan
Running Time: 119 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: April 30th 2018 (UK)

Every so often a film comes along that beats all expectations at the box office. Film commentators then race to come up with reasons for its runaway success. They tried to do that for Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, but generally came up short. After all this is a film that initially people thought would be lucky to clear $200-$300 million worldwide at the box office, but which ended up with $900 million+ and is now the highest grossing film Sony Pictures has ever made.

Is it down to the box office power of The Rock? Was it because there wasn’t much family film competition at the time it was release? Did box office watchers underestimate the love people had for the 1995 Robin Williams Jumanji movie, especially as many of those that grew up with that film now have kids of their own? [Read more…]

New Rampage Trailer – Dwayne Johnson gets his very own giant gorilla monster movie

February 13, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

I don’t know whether Dwayne Johnson really wannted a role in Kong: Skull Island and didn’t get one – and so initiated his own very large gorilla movie. It seems a definite possibility, even if the gorillas here seem to have been dyeing their hair white, like the apes in Michael Crichton’s Congo!

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Primatologist Davis Okoye (Johnson), a man who keeps people at a distance, shares an unshakable bond with George, the extraordinarily intelligent, silverback gorilla who has been in his care since birth. But a rogue genetic experiment gone awry mutates this gentle ape into a raging creature of enormous size. To make matters worse, it’s soon discovered there are other similarly altered animals. As these newly created alpha predators tear across North America, destroying everything in their path, Okoye teams with a discredited genetic engineer to secure an antidote, fighting his way through an ever-changing battlefield, not only to halt a global catastrophe but to save the fearsome creature that was once his friend.’

Rampage – which oddly enough is based on a 1986 computer game (yes, really) is due out in cinemas in April. Take a look at the new trailer below. [Read more…]

Skyscraper Trailer – It’s Dwayne Johnson versus a big building that’s on fire!

February 5, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Dwayne Johnson seems to be on a mission to prove that nothing can stop him – not even when he’s lost a leg and he’s in an enormous building that’s on fire. That’s what he’s facing in Skyscraper.

Zachary Levi Cast As DC’s Shazam For Upcoming Comic Book Adaptation

October 28, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s almost three years ago that Dwayne Johnson signed on to play Black Adam in New Line/DC’s planned comic book adaptation of Shazam!. However it’s only now that the title character has been cast, with Chuck himself, Zachary Levi taking on the role.

It’s not certain now though whether Johnson will appear in the Shazam! film, as DC is planning a stand alone Black Adam movie.

Shazam (also known as Captain Marvel, although you can see why they’d avoid that name) is the superhero alter-ego of a boy called Billy Batson. The hero has the powers of Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles, and Mercury. While not particularly well known today outside comic book circles, he was the biggest selling character of the 1940s.

The casting of Levi sees the actor jumping from Marvel to DC, as he played Fandral in the first two Thor movies. However, here he will get to take centre stage with a movie of his own. Shazam! is currently set for an April 2019 release.

Baywatch: Extended Edition (Blu-ray Review) – Zac Efron & Dwayne Johnson don the red shorts

September 24, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Dwayne Johnson, Zac Efron, Alexandra Daddario, Priyanka Chopra, Jon Bass
Director: Seth Gordon
Running Time: 121 mins (Extended Edition)
Certificate: 15
Release Date: September 25th 2017 (UK)

It was almost inevitable that at some point they’d make a movie version of Baywatch. It was, after all, the most popular TV show in the world in the 1990s, and its reputation for being a bit silly and cheesy meant it was ripe for comedy/parody. However, it’s also the sort of property that could have resulted in a truly dreadful film.

I suppose I ought to say what the Baywatch movie is about, but it doesn’t matter an awful lot, as the plot often feels like the least important part of the film. Dwayne Johnson is Mitch Buchanan, head of Emerald Bay’s lifeguards. He has a new recruit thrust upon him – disgraced double Olympic swimming champion Matt Brody (Zac Efron). The young buck isn’t that impressed about being there, and thinks the lifeguards should be honoured he’s walking amongst them. He’s also a bit confused about why Mitch and his fellow guards seem to spend most of their time fighting crime rather than saving people from drowning. [Read more…]

New Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle Trailer – Dwayne Johnson is a teen boy & Jack Black gets gender-swapped

September 20, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

In the last few months there’s been a lot of talk about how Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle will respect the original and follow the spirit of the Robin Williams movie and his character. However, the trailers have suggested we’ll be dealing with a very different kind of film.

This time around a bunch of teens get morphed into a Jumanji videogame, which involves a nerdy teen boy becoming Dwayne Johnson, and a hot girl suddenly finding herself as Jack Black. And as the new trailer shows, the girl inside Jack has the hots for Johnson.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘In the brand new adventure Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, the tables are turned as four teenagers in detention are sucked into the world of Jumanji. When they discover an old video game console with a game they’ve never heard of, they are immediately thrust into the game’s jungle setting, into the bodies of their avatars, played by Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, and Karen Gillan. What they discover is that you don’t just play Jumanji –Jumanji plays you. They’ll have to go on the most dangerous adventure of their lives, or they’ll be stuck in the game forever…’

The movie is due out in December. Take a look at the new trailer below. [Read more…]
