Hannibal – Season 2 (Blu-ray Review)

September 30, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Hugh Dancy, Mads Mikkelsen, Laurence Fishburne, Caroline Dhavernas
Director: Various
Running Time: 559 mins
Certificate: 18
Release Date: September 22nd 2014 (UK)

Hannibal should have been cancelled after Season 1, but not because of its quality. It got extremely low ratings in the US (and Season 2 was just as bad), which normally means a swift demise. However thanks to the fact it’s co-production between several countries, and therefore costs NBC comparatively little to make, it’s lived on.

And that’s a damn good thing, as while it’s found it tough to find its audience on American network TV, it’s also one of the most critically lauded shows around. It’s often said that a TV show has a ‘cinematic style’, but normally it’s just hyperbole. In Hannibal’s case it’s really true. It’s visually meticulous – something you can really appreciate on Blu-ray – has a great cast and a storytelling style that doesn’t assume the audience is made up of morons. [Read more…]

Hugh Dancy Up For Rupert Everett’s Oscar Wilde Biopic The Happy Prince

May 19, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

hugh-dancyHugh Dancy may spend part of the year being a bit nuts in Hannibal, but now he’s got a plan for the autumn, as ScreenDaily reports that he’s signed on for Rupert Everett’s long-gestating Oscar Wilde biopic, The Happy Prince.

Everett has been planning the movie, which will also serve as his feature directorial debut, since 2012, but now he’s finally pulling it together and hopes to shoot this October.

The film is said to focus on Oscar’s final days. It will see Wilde considering his own failure through his trademark wit and irony. After his imprisonment for homosexuality, Wilde spent his days in self-imposed exile in France. He briefly reunited with his love, Lord Alfred Douglas, but was kept away from his children. Although he published The Ballad Of Reading Gaol, he did very little writing and his health began to fail (partly due to poverty). He died of cerebral meningitis at the age of 46.

ScreenDaily doesn’t say who Dancy will play, but Lord Alfred Douglas would be a smart bet.

Colin Firth, Edward Fox, Emily Watson and Tom Wilkinson are also onboard the movie, which plan a very multi-national shoot taking in Italy, Belgium, France and the UK.

Hannibal – Season 1 (Blu-ray)

September 1, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Hugh Dancy, Laurence Fishburne, Mads Mikkelsen, Caroline Dhavernas
Director: Various
Running Time: 550 mins
Certificate: 18
Release Date: September 2nd 2013

When it was first announced that a TV series was in development based around Hannibal Lecter and the other characters from Thomas Harris Red Dragon, there was a lot of harrumphing that it was a travesty and doomed to failure. However the show has surprised many by being very good. It also makes quite a lot of smart moves, not least that despite being named after Lecter, it doesn’t blow its load and become the cannibal freak show – indeed, it’s never even mentioned he is a cannibal, adding a frisson of excitement to the meals he likes to cook for people. Hannibal Trailer – Take a look at the TV series prequel to the Lecter tales

March 1, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While Silence Of The Lambs and Hannibal showed us what happened after Will Graham captured cannibal serial killer Hannibal Lecter, Red Dragon only let us know what happened when Will actually got his man as well as that he’d been working with the psychologist beforehand, not knowing Hannibal was the man he was hunting.

Now TV is going to tell us that story, with Hugh Dancy taking on the Will Graham role, with Mads Mikkelsen as Lecter, long before he ever met Clarice Starling. While some have wondered whether television will do Lecter justice, we get our first chance to take a look with a trailer.

It certainly looks like it could be interesting, with Hannibal playing with the FBI investigator and trying to get him to truly understand the mind of the killer. Laurence Fishburne also stars.

The show begins in the US in early April, and should hopefully reach the UK now long afterwards.

First Look At Mads Mikkelsen As Hannibal Lecter In New TV Show

October 26, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

There have been a lot of discontented grumblings about the idea of moving the character of Hannibal Lecter from film to TV, but it was certainly positive when Bryan Fuller (Dead Like Me, Pushing Daisies) signed up to oversee the show and Mads Mikkelsen came onboard to play Hannibal.

Now the first stills from Hannibal have arrived, via scans from the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly. They show Mikkelsen taking to the role with relish, Hugh Dancy as Will Graham, and Laurence Fishburne as Jack Crawford. The show is a prequel to the other Hannibal stories, looking at how Graham worked with psychiatrist Lecter before he discovered the doctor was actually a serial killing cannibal. Fuller has said he wants to look at how the two men are two sides of the same coin.

The show is expected to debut in the US early next year and should come to the UK not long afterwards.

New Hysteria Trailer – Maggie Gyllenhaal helps invent the vibrator

April 16, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The complicated sexual mores of the Victorians have always been of interest to slightly prurient tastes, and Hysteria gives a bit of a comic look at the odd contradictions of the time. Here’s the synopsis: ‘Maggie Gyllenhaal and Hugh Dancy star in this cheeky romantic comedy about the invention of the vibrator. Victorian London is brought to life in vivid colour as a young doctor (Dancy) struggles to establish himself while confronting the gutsy daughter of his boss (Gyllenhaal). Rupert Everett and Felicity Jones play supporting roles.’ The vibrator was originally developed to help treat ‘female hysteria’ (believe it or not, back then many doctors manually stimulated ladies to orgasm, which was viewed as a purely medical practice to treat nervous conditions, and not sexual at all). No UK release date is currently set.
