Beaches Remake Trailer – Idina Menzel & Nia Long have the wind beneath their wings

November 30, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

beaches-2017-slideThe 1988 Bette Midler and Barbara Hershey movie Beaches is deservedly beloved by many, but if you look at the basics of the plot, it is a bit like a Lifetime movie. Now it’s becoming one, with Lifetime remaking the film (or at least re-adapting Iris Rainer’s novel), with Idina Menzel and Nia Long.

Once more the movie will chart the relationship between CC (Menzel) and Hillary (Long), who meet as children and maintain their friendship as they age, despite coming from different backgrounds and their lives going in different directions. There will be some differences though, with THR saying that, the ‘remake will follow CC as she builds her career in Los Angeles, whereas the original took the young pair to NYC while CC made a name for herself on Broadway.’

The film will certainly trade on the earlier version though, with Menzel offering new takes on Midler’s classic songs that featured on the Beaches soundtrack, Wind Beneath My Wings and The Glory of Love. You can get a taste for Menzel’s Wind Beneath My Wings in the background of the new trailer for the movie below. Beaches will first air on Lifetime in January. [Read more…]

Frozen (Blu-ray)

March 30, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel, Jonathan Groff, Josh Gad
Director: Chris Buck, Jennifer Lee
Running Time: 102 mins
Certificate: U
Release Date: March 31st 2014

Over the weekend thanks to a continued strong performance in Japan, Frozen became the number one animated movie of all time at the global box office, overtaking Toy Story 3. It now stands at number 10 on the all-time list and will end up with over $1.1 billion.

It’s not bad for a movie that six months ago had relatively little buzz. The film came as a surprise to many, as evidenced by how its box office worked. It got a pretty good but not spectacular opening (it wasn’t even the number 1 film in the US on the weekend it got its wide release), but then continued to play in cinemas for months, due the fact it had such amazing word of mouth. Idina Menzel, Jimmy Fallon & The Roots Do Let It Go With Kid’s Instruments

March 4, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

We’ve gone a little Let It Go crazy at BGPS, as this is the third version we’ve posted in the 48 hours since its Oscar win (following the original and Matthew Wilkas’ farty take). However this one is certainly unique, as barnstorming songstress Idina Menzel and The Roots rock up with new Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon to perform the song, with the musical accompaniment provided by classroom instruments.

If you’ve ever wondered what an Academy Award winning song would sound like played on a triangle, glockenspiels, kazoos and bongo drums, here you go! However I doubt you’ve ever wondered that.

It makes for a fun rendition of the tune, and it certainly doesn’t put Menzel off her stride, whose lungs are as powerful as they always are. [Read more…]

In Honour Of Its Oscar Win, Take A Look At The Full Let It Go Sequence From Frozen

March 3, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Some have been critical of Idina Menzel’s performance of Let It Go at the Oscars, saying she seemed too nervous, but if you ask us, we thought she knocked it out of the park. We did want to show you her Oscar performance, but the Academy Of Motion Picture Arts & Science is busy taking down all the versions posted on Youtube, so instead we thought it was a great opportunity to post the full Let It Go sequence from Frozen.

Understandably the tune has become a full-on coming out anthem, with it lyrics all about someone who’s used to trying to be good and fit it with what others want, but now they’re ready to be who they are no matter what anyone else said.

As millions already now it’s a real barnstormer of a song, so enjoy it! [Read more…]

Anna (voice of Kristen Bell) - Anna is more daring than graceful and, at times, can act before she thinks. But she’s also the most optimistic and caring person you’ll ever meet. She longs to reconnect with her sister, Elsa, as they were close during their childhood. When Elsa accidentally unleashes a magical secret that locks the kingdom of Arendelle in an eternal winter, Anna embarks on a dangerous adventure to make things right. Armed with only her fearlessness, a never-give-up attitude and her faith in others, Anna is determined to save both her kingdom and her family.

Duke of Weselton (voice of Alan Tudyk) - What the Duke of Weselton lacks in stature, he makes up for in arrogance and showboating. He’s determined to get close to the new queen—that is, until Elsa’s magical secret is revealed. Then he’s the first to call her a monster and try to turn her own kingdom against her—anything that might help him exploit Arendelle’s tradable goods.

Elsa (voice of Idina Menzel) - From the outside, Elsa looks poised, regal and reserved, but in reality, she lives in fear as she wrestles with a mighty secret—she was born with the power to create ice and snow. It’s a beautiful ability, but also extremely dangerous. Haunted by the moment her magic nearly killed her younger sister Anna, Elsa has isolated herself, spending every waking minute trying to suppress her growing powers. Her mounting emotions trigger the magic, accidentally setting off an eternal winter that she can’t stop. She fears she’s becoming a monster and that no one, not even her sister, can help her.

Hans (voice of Santino Fontana) - Hans is a handsome royal from a neighboring kingdom who comes to Arendelle for Elsa’s coronation. With 12 older brothers, Hans grew up feeling practically invisible—and Anna can relate. Hans is smart, observant and chivalrous. Unlike Elsa, Hans promises he’ll never shut Anna out; he just might be the connection she’s been waiting for all these years.

Kristoff (voice of Jonathan Groff) - Kristoff is a true outdoorsman. He lives high up in the mountains where he harvests ice and sells it to the kingdom of Arendelle. Rough around the edges, Kristoff’s the strong, no-nonsense type, who follows his own set of rules. He may seem like a loner, but he always has his best friend by his side—a loyal and extremely mangy reindeer named Sven.

Marshmallow - Marshmallow is an enormous icy snowman born from Elsa’s powers. He serves as a brute bodyguard charged with keeping intruders away from her ice palace. The menacing white beast doesn’t say much, but he packs a powerful punch.

Oaken (voiced by Chris Williams) - Oaken runs Wandering Oaken's Trading Post and Sauna. But since Elsa’s massive winter storm hits in mid-July, he finds himself with a surplus of summer supplies. Deal-seekers beware: though he’s good-natured and helpful, if you cross him, Oaken won’t hesitate to throw you out of his humble establishment.

Olaf (voice of Josh Gad) - He’s Olaf and he likes warm hugs. Sprung from Elsa’s magical powers, Olaf is by far the friendliest snowman to walk the mountains above Arendelle. His innocence, outgoing personality and uncanny ability to disassemble himself at good and not-so-good times lead to some awkward, albeit laughable moments. He may also have the world’s most impossible dream, but what he doesn’t know won’t melt him—or will it?

Sven - A reindeer with the heart of a Labrador, Sven is Kristoff’s loyal friend, sleigh-puller and conscience. He makes sure his mountain-man companion is the stand-up guy Sven knows and loves, and does so without saying a word. A few emphatic snorts usually get his point across. Life would be perfect if only Kristoff would lose that ridiculous reindeer voice he likes to use when speaking for Sven (as if reindeers really talk that way).

Disney’s Frozen Character Posters Debut – Meet Elsa & Anna

February 4, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

frozen character poster1 thumbLater this year Disney will be hoping to match the success of Tangled with Frozen, a new take on the classic tale The Snow Queen (a story the studio has been thinking about animating for decades). Now two new character posters from the film have debuted over at Cine1, giving us our first proper look at lead characters Elsa and Anna.

Here is the synopsis: ‘When a prophecy traps a kingdom in eternal winter, Anna, a fearless optimist, teams up with extreme mountain man Kristoff and his sidekick reindeer Sven on an epic journey to find Anna’s sister Elsa, the Snow Queen, and put an end to her icy spell. Encountering mystical trolls, a funny snowman named Olaf, Everest-like extremes and magic at every turn, Anna and Kristoff battle the elements in a race to save the kingdom from destruction.’

Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel, Josh Gad and Jonathan Groff lead the voice cast. The movie is due out in the US this November, and will probably reach the UK the following February.

Idina Menzel & Kristen Bell Join Disney’s Frozen

June 12, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Idina Menzel is a huge name on the Broadway stage, but she’s never made as much of an impact on screen, despite popping up in the likes of Rent, Enchanted and playing Rachel’s birth mother in Glee. However now her voice will be getting a major outing in Disney’s Frozen, which is inspired by the fairytale The Snow Queen.

Slated for release November 2013 and directed by Chris Buck (Tarzan, Surf’s Up), Frozen will also feature Kristen Bell as Anna, a young dreamer about to take the adventure of a lifetime, with Menzel as Elsa, the Snow Queen.

In Frozen, a prophecy traps a kingdom in eternal winter, so Anna (Bell) must team up with Kristoff, a daring mountain man, on the grandest of journeys to find the Snow Queen (Menzel) and put an end to the icy spell. Encountering Everest-like extremes, mystical creatures and magic at every turn, Anna and Kristoff battle the elements in a race to save the kingdom from destruction.

The movie will feature original songs by Broadway greats Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez. Robert Lopez is a three-time Tony Award-winner thanks to The Book of Mormon, which was co-written with Trey Parker and Matt Stone (South Park), and the musical Avenue Q, which ran for six years on Broadway and four years in London’s West End. Lopez teamed with wife Kristen Anderson-Lopez, whose Drama Desk-winning show In Transit is Broadway-bound, to write original songs for 2011’s Winnie the Pooh, a stage version of Finding Nemo and a new musical called Up Here.
