Wonder (Blu-ray Review) – Important life lessons for young and old

March 24, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Jacob Tremblay, Julia Roberts, Owen Wilson, Izabela Vidovic, Mandy Patinkin
Director: Stephen Chbosky
Running Time: 113 mins
Certificate: PG
Release Date: March 16th 2018 (UK)

God bless young Jacob Tremblay. The Room and Book Of Henry star is impossibly cute, something that comes through even under the large amounts of makeup he has to wear for Wonder. Although it might seem a little creepy to be talking about a young boy’s cuteness, in this case it’s vital to the film, as Tremblay’s talents are so central to the movie. The makeup is potentially a real barrier for an actor though, and a tough one for somebody so young to overcome. Jacob does it though with aplomb.

Tremblay plays August ‘Auggie’ Pullman, who was born with Treacher Collins Syndrome, which has left him with significant facial deformities. He’s been home-schooled by his mother (Julia Roberts), but will be going to mainstream school for the first time when he joins the fifth grade. Auggie is a shy and sensitive child, very aware of how others treat him because he looks different. [Read more…]

Julia Roberts To Star In Adaptation Of Cynthia Swanson’s The Bookseller

May 12, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Since she became a mother, we haven’t seen quite as much of Julia Roberts as we once did. However, she’s now picked a new project she plans to star in, as Variety reports she’s attached to an adaptation of Cynthia Swanson’s The Bookseller.

The book is about Kitty Miller, a single woman in the 1960s running a bookstore with her best friend, Frieda. He hopes for marriage and a family have never quite worked out. Then she starts to have dreams about an alternate life, one where she’s a slightly different woman who’s married with kids and seems to have the life Kitty has always wanted. At first this world only exists when she dreams, but could she eventually get to the point where she could choose that existence instead?

It’s early days though as no screenwriter or director is currently attached. It’s not known either when the film might shoot.

Smurfs: The Lost Village (Cinema Review) – The little blue creatures are back and totally animated

March 29, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Danny Pudi, Demi Lovato, Jack McBrayer, Joe Manganiello, Julia Roberts
Director: Kelly Asbury
Running Time: 89 mins
Certificate: PG
Release Date: March 31st 2017 (UK)

After a couple of part live-action outings, Sony has decided that a bit of a reboot and a fully animated adventure is the direction they want to take The Smurfs. They’d have probably done better to have gone this root from the beginning, as the little blue creatures never seemed like they fit in the real world, and this fully animated adventure allows it to be closer to the tales of Peyo and the early 80s Hannah-Barbera cartoon.

As well as the fact there’s no Neil Patrick Harris or Hank Azaria, the voices of most of the Smurfs have changed too. Not that kids will care though, and quite frankly why they decided they needed names like Demi Lovato, Joe Manganiello and Julia Roberts involved is a mystery, as it’s not like anyone is going to buy a ticket because of it. Money Monster (Blu-ray Review)

October 2, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: George Clooney, Jack O'Connell, Julia Roberts, Dominic West, Caitriona Balfe
Director: Jodie Foster
Running Time: 98 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: October 3rd 2016 (UK)

Lee Gates (George Clooney) presents the TV show Money Monster, a programme that tries to make stocks, shares and investments a bit more entertaining. His latest broadcast quickly takes an unexpected turn when a man (Jack O’Connell) bursts into the studio brandishing a gun and forces Lee to put on an explosive vest.

The man, who it’s revealed is called Kyle, is an average joe who’s been sent over the edge by the fact that a few weeks before Lee told people they should invest in a company called IBIS. However, while Lee said it was safer than a savings account, the share price has collapsed due to what the company said was a glitch in its trading algorithm, and Kyle has lost every penny he’s got. Kyle wants answers and thinks Lee should be the one who gets them for him. With the help of his producer, Patty (Julia Roberts), talking to him from the gallery, Lee attempts to keep Kyle calm while they figure out what’s going on. [Read more…]

New Mother’s Day Trailer – Julia Roberts, Jennifer Aniston, Kate Hudson team for a tale of moms

March 30, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Mothers-Day-slideBrits may be a bit confused about why a film called Mother’s Day is reaching cinemas over here until June, but it’s because Americans have a different Mother’s Day to us, so they’re getting the film in April, and we might as well wait until June. The movie itself is another Garry Marshall ensemble tale (after Valentine’s Day and New Year’s Eve).

This one stars the likes of Jennifer Aniston, Julia Roberts, Kate Hudson, Britt Robertson, Sarah Chalke, Shay Mitchell, Jon Lovitz, Aasif Mandvi, Timothy Olyphant and Margo Martindale. A new trailer has dropped, which you can take a look at below.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘“Mother’s Day” is the latest star studded ensemble comedy from director Garry Marshall (“Pretty Woman,” “Valentine’s Day”). Bringing together Jennifer Aniston, Kate Hudson and Julia Roberts along with Jason Sudeikis, it’s a celebration of mothers everywhere. This big-hearted comedy invites us all to enjoy the laughter, tears and love as three generations come together in the week leading up to Mother’s Day.’ [Read more…]

Julia Roberts Wants To Fool Me Once In A Harlan Coben Adaptation

March 29, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

julia-robertsJulia Roberts hasn’t had many big hits in the past few years, partly due to the fact she cut down on her hectic acting schedule so she’s have more time to spend with her family. However, she certainly hasn’t retired, and now Variety reports she’s planning to produce and star in the film, Fool Me Once.

The movie will be based on the just published Harlan Coben novel, which ‘follows a former special ops pilot Maya (Roberts) who sees an unthinkable image captured by her nanny cam while she is at work: her 2-year-old daughter playing with Maya’s husband, Joe — who had been brutally murdered two weeks earlier.’

Yep, you’d certainly be freaked out if you saw your dead husband playing with your kid, and we’re presuming there isn’t a supernatural explanation, and instead her hubby has faked his death. There’s no news on when the film might hit cinemas.

Mother’s Day Trailer – The stars line up for another Garry Marshall ensemble movie

February 13, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Mothers-Day-slideDirector Garry Marshall had a surprised hit with the star-studden Valentine’s Day, but audience’s weren’t as interested in the follow-up, New Year’s Eve. However, Marshall hasn’t given up, as now he’s bringing us Mother’s Day, which features the likes of Julia Roberts, Jennifer Aniston, Kate Hudson, and Jason Sudeikis.

Once more they are a loosely connected group of people, all of whom are having issues involving mothers (or with the fact they are mothers), around the days that moms are supposed to be celebrated. To give us a taste, the first trailer has arrived, which you can take a look at below.

This big-hearted comedy invites us all to enjoy the laughter, tears and love as three generations come together in the week leading up to Mother’s Day.’

It’ll be in cinemas this spring.

January 13, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

money-monster-trailer-slideGeorge Clooney and Julia Roberts are teaming up again for the drama/thriller Money Monster, and they’re bringing on Jack O’Connell for the ride. And as this is Clooney, you shouldn’t be too surprised that the movie tries to mix entertainment with a few social issues.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘In the taut and tense thriller Money Monster, Lee Gates (George Clooney) is a bombastic TV personality whose popular financial network show has made him the money wiz of Wall Street. But after he hawks a high tech stock that mysteriously crashes, an irate investor (Jack O’Connell) takes Gates, his crew, and his ace producer Patty Fenn (Julia Roberts) hostage live on air. Unfolding in real time, Gates and Fenn must find a way to keep themselves alive while simultaneously uncovering the truth behind a tangle of big money lies.’

New Secret in Their Eyes Trailer – Chiwetel Ejiofor & Julia Roberts are looking for a killer

November 6, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Secret-in-Their-Eyes-slideShortly after the 2009 Argentinian movie The Secret in Their Eyes won the Best Foreign Language Oscar there was a lot of talk on making an English-language version. It’s taken a while but now it’s on its way, with Chiwetel Ejiofor in the lead role, alongside Julia Roberts and Nicole Kidman.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘A tight-knit team of rising FBI investigators – Ray (Chiwetel Ejiofor) and Jess (Julia Roberts), along with their District Attorney supervisor Claire (Nicole Kidman) – is suddenly torn apart when they discover that Jess’s teenage daughter has been brutally and inexplicably murdered.

Now, thirteen years later, after obsessively searching every day for the elusive killer, Ray finally uncovers a new lead that he’s certain can permanently resolve the case, nail the vicious murderer, and bring long-desired closure to his team. No one is prepared, however, for the shocking, unspeakable secret that will reveal the enduring, destructive effects of personal vengeance on the human soul.

‘Interweaving past and present, this deeply layered mystery explores the murky boundaries between justice and revenge, and asks the question: how far would you go to right an unfathomable wrong?’

The movie’s due out later this year.
