Sinister (Cinema)

October 4, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Ethan Hawke, Juliet Rylance, Fred Dalton Thompson, James Ransom, Michael Hall D’Addario
Director: Scott Derrickson
Running Time: 110 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: October 5th 2012

Sinister should be rubbish. The plot is rather silly, numerous things happen that make little sense (and not just because of supernatural shenanigans), and it has a title so generic its feels like they simple couldn’t be assed. However thanks to some excellent make-you-jump moments, a mystery plot that holds enough interest to keep you watching and a creepy atmosphere, it’s a surprisingly effective chiller.

Ethan Hawke plays Ellison Oswalt, a writer of true-crime books who moves his family to a small town to investigate the murder of four members of a family, and the disappearance of a small girl, for which no perpetrator has ever been found. What he hasn’t told his wife and kids is that the house they’ve moved into is the one where the family were hung from a tree in the backyard. [Read more…]

Sinister Trailer – Ethan Hawke has supernatural problems with old films

June 14, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Summit Entertainment has unveiled the first trailer for Scott Derrickson’s upcoming supernatural thriller Sinister. From the producer of the Paranormal Activity films and the writer/director of The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Ethan Hawke plays a true crime novelist who discovers a box of mysterious, disturbing home movies that plunge his family into a nightmarish experience of supernatural horror. It all looks a bit Insidious meets The Ring. The film should be out just before Halloween.

Katie Holmes & Allison Janney Take Flight With The Seagull

April 11, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Actorly and literary types love Anton Chekhov, but he’s not exactly a writer who’s permeated the mainstream. However Hurt Locker actor Christian Camargo is hoping to change that, as he’s planning to write and direct a modern day take on Chekhov’s classic, The Seagull.

Now he’s got a to flight cast to help him, as Variety reports that Allison Janney, William Hurt, Jean Reno, Katie Holmes, Mark Rylance and Juliet Rylance have signed up to star. The Seagull is well known for its large cast of characters, telling interconnected tales of romantic and artistic conflict, mainly concentrating on ingenue Nina, fading actress Irina Arkadina, her son the symbolist playwright Konstantin Tréplev, and the famous middlebrow writer Trigorin.

However rather than being set in 19th Century Russia, this new version will take place in modern day rural New England on a Memorial Day weekend. Allsion Janney is set to play Elizabeth, a film star based on the Arkadina , with Hurt as her brother and Katie Holmes as the emotional daughter of the estate’s caretaker. Shooting will take place this summer in New York.
