New UK Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit Poster Shows Chris Pine In Action

November 29, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jack-ryan-shadow-recruit-poster2
It’s only a couple of months until Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit arrives in UK cinemas, and ahead of that a new poster has been released, featuring Chris Pine in the title role, along with a floating Kevin Costner and Keira Knightley. It also promises intelligence is a weapon – not something that’s often seemed true in big Hollywood action films.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Based on the CIA analyst created by espionage master Tom Clancy, “Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit” is a blistering action thriller that follows Ryan (Chris Pine, “Star Trek”) from his quiet double-life as a veteran-turned-Wall Street executive to his all-out initiation as a hunted American agent on the trail of a massive terrorist plot in Moscow.

‘Ryan appears to be just another New York executive to his friends and loved ones, but his enlistment into the CIA secretly goes back years. He was brought in as a brainy Ph.D. who crunches global data – but when Ryan ferrets out a meticulously planned scheme to collapse the U.S. economy and spark global chaos, he becomes the only man with the skills to stop it. Now, he’s gone fully operational, thrust into a world of mounting suspicion, deception and deadly force. Caught between his tight-lipped handler Harper (Academy Award-winner Kevin Costner), his in-the-dark fiancée Cathy (Keira Knightley) and a brilliant Russian oligarch (Kenneth Branagh), Jack must confront a new reality where no one can seem to be trusted, yet the fate of millions rests on his finding the truth. With the urgency of a lit fuse, he’s in a race to stay one step ahead of everyone around him.’

It’s due out in the UK on January 24th, 2014.

Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit Trailer – Chris Pine takes on Tom Clancy’s hero

October 4, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Paramount must like Chris Pine, as they’ve already got him as the lead in Star Trek and now they’re relaunching another major franchise based around him with Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit. We got a poster a couple of days ago, and now comes the trailer.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘In a story taking place prior to the original Jack Ryan stories, Ryan is a young stock broker working for a billionaire in Moscow before joining the CIA. When the billionaire he is advising frames him for a terrorist plot and kidnaps his wife, Ryan must race against time to clear his name, stop the plot, and save his wife.’

Chris Pine, Kenneth Branagh, Kevin Costner, Keira Knightley and Colm Feore star, with Branagh also directing. The film is out at Christmas. [Read more…]

Downton’s Allen Leech Joins Benedict Cumberbatch In Alan Turing Biopic Imitation Game

August 28, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

allen-leechIf you’re an up and coming British actor who wants to get movie roles, you need get cast in either Downton Abbey or Game Of Thrones. Now another of Downton’s stars is moving to the big screen as Variety reports that Allen Leech – aka’s the Abbey’s Tom Branson – has signed up to appear in The Imitation Game.

The film is a biopic of famed codebreaker and father of computers Alan Turing, with Benedict Cumberbatch set for the lead role. Turing is best known for helping the Allies defeat the Germans in World War II by breaking codes and building machines that were the forerunners of modern computers (which were based on his theories). However, in the 1950s he was prosecuted by the British government for being gay.

Turing made the extreme decision to undergo chemical castration instead of going to prison. In 1954 he died from cyanide poisoning, with many believing he killed himself by dosing an apple with the substance (although there are still some who believe it was accidental).

Leech will apparently play a Scottish spy for the Soviets who plots against Cumberbatch’s character. There’s no news on exactly how the spy will fit into the movie.

There’s already some controversy about the film, with the man who wrote the biography it’s based on, Andrew Hodges, saying he’s, “alarmed by the inaccuracies in it”, most notably the fact they have turned fellow code breaker Joan Clarke (Keira Knightley) into a “complicated love interest”, with Hodges saying “They have built up the relationship with Joan much more than it actually was.”

He’s also concerned about a central romance with  John Cairncross, who was later identified as the fifth man in the British spy ring that included Kim Philby and Guy Burgess. Hodges has said, “Their relationship is invented”.

However the producers have said that while they’ve taken the creative liberties the screenwriter is still being worked on and they want to get it right.

Morten Tyldum is set to direct the movie.

Keira Knightley To Produce & Star In The Other Typist

June 27, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Keira-KnightleyKeira Knightley is turning producer, as THR reports that she’s planning to produce and star in an adaptation of Suzanne Rindell’s novel The Other Typist, with Fox Searchlight set to back to the movie.

The book is about ‘Rose, a lonely and isolated typist in a police precinct who strikes up a friendship with a beautiful and mysterious co-worker who introduces her to the glamorous and forbidden underworld of 1920s New York.’

It’s still early days though, as no one has been set to write the script, and it doesn’t appear a director has signed up yet either. This will be Knightley’s first attempt to produce, so hopefully it’ll go well for her.

Keira Knightley Set To Join Benedict Cumberbatch In Alan Turing Biopic The Imitation Game

June 5, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Keira-KnightleyEveryone seems to agree making a movie about Alan Turing is a good idea, and the script The Imitation Game has generated huge amounts of buzz, but it’s taken quite a while to get it off the ground. That’s partly due to Leo DiCaprio signing on to star and then leaving the project behind, as well a several directors coming and going.

Now it’s moving forward with Benedict Cumberbatch set to play Turing, and Variety reports Keira Knightley is in talks to join him.

Turing is famed for helping the Allies defeat the Germans in World War II by breaking codes and building machines that were the forerunners of modern computers (which were based on his theories).

There’s no news on exactly who Knightley will play. Morten Tyldum (Headhunters) is set to direct from Graham Moore’s script.

Keira Knightley Replaces Anne Hathaway In Dark Comedy Laggies

May 7, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Keira-KnightleyKeira Knightley may have just gotten married, but she isn’t having a break from booking new movie roles, as she’s in talks for the dark comedy Laggies, according to EW. Back in March Anne Hathaway was in talks to star, but she was recently forced to back out due to scheduling conflicts with Interstellar, which she joined last month.

Laggies is about a young woman (Knightley) who has an averse reaction to her boyfriend’s (Mark Webber) surprise proposal. She shies away from answering him by pretending to go on a business trip, while she is actually just hanging out with her younger sister (Chloe Moretz). Sam Rockwell also stars.

Lynn Shelton is directing from a screenplay by Andrea Siegel. It isn’t clear when it’ll shoot, but it’ll presumably be fairly soon if Hathaway couldn’t do this and Interstellar.

These are the things that Lorene Scafaria sets out to explore in this touchingly sweet, sad and laugh out loud look at the end of the world. Keira Knightley Gets Female Lead in Jack Ryan Reboot

August 12, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A few days ago, it was revealed that Keira Knightley was high on the shortlist for the female lead in Paramount’s planned Jack Ryan reboot, which has Chris Pine attached for the lead and Kenneth Branagh directing. Now Keira’s been chosen after Branagh auditioned several actresses and has gone into negotiations for the part.

Pine will play Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, an ex-Marine who now works as a financial analyst in Moscow, in a tale that takes the character back to his early days, before he joined the CIA. When he discovers his employer’s plan to finance a terrorist attack on the American economic system, Jack Ryan races to save the country and his future wife (Keira Knightley). Director Kenneth Branagh is also starring as the villain.

David Koepp wrote the most recent draft of the screenplay, from an original draft by Adam Cozad. Production is slated to begin next month. (Source: THR)

Knightley, Jones & Lilly Up For Female Lead In Jack Ryan Reboot

August 2, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

After years of rewriting, jiggling around, scheduling issues and various other problems, it seems Paramount’s planned reboot of the Jack Ryan franchise, starring Chris Pine, is finally moving forward. A shortlist has now been drawn up for the female lead in the movie – Jack’s future wife – so who could be playing it?

Well, while shortlists don’t always lead to the person who’ll finally play the role, at the moment Deadline says that Paramount and director Kenneth Branagh are looking at Keira Knightley, Felicity Jones and Evangeline Lilly for the role. Knightley is considered to be the frontrunner, though the other two are still very much in the mix. Total Recall co-stars Kate Beckinsale and Jessica Biel were both in the running for the part as well at one point, but that seems to no longer be the case.

Anne Archer played Jack’s wife in Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger, but the planned film returns Jack to his early day, before he was married, with Ryan as an ex-Marine who takes a job in Moscow and works to take down his boss(probably played by Branagh), who turns out to be a terrorist working to destroy the United States economy. It still isn’t clear when the movie might shoot, although it’s hoped it’ll go into production before the end of the year.

Watch A Six-Minute Anna Karenina Clip

July 24, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Joe Wright’s Anna Karenina sounds quite unusual, with the director starting a new six-minute clip by saying the entire thing was shot inside a theatre, with the sets built inside, to allow actors to move from one place to another fluidly. It’s a unique way of doing things, which is probably why they’re trying to drum up interest with this clip.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Keira Knightley stars as Anna Karenina in Joe Wright’s version of Tolstoy’s epic love story. Adapted by Academy Award winner Tom Stoppard (Shakespeare in Love), Jude Law plays Anna’s husband Aleksei Karenin and Aaron Johnson (Nowhere Boy) stars as Count Vronsky. Rounding out the cast are Kelly Macdonald (Boardwalk Empire), Matthew Macfadyen (Pride & Prejudice), Domhnall Gleeson (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows), Alicia Vikander (The Seventh Son), two-time Academy Award nominee Emily Watson, Olivia Williams (Hanna), and Ruth Wilson (Luther).

‘The story unfolds in its original late-19th-century Russia high-society setting and powerfully explores the capacity for love that surges through the human heart, from the passion between adulterers to the bond between a mother and her children. As Anna questions her happiness, change comes to her family, friends, and community.

‘Anna Karenina marks Wright’s fourth film with Working Title, following the award-winning box office successes Pride & Prejudice and Atonement and The Soloist. The film is produced by Working Title co-chairmen Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner and reunites them with Paul Webster, all three of whom produced Wright’s first two films Pride & Prejudice and Atonement.’
